Starting off to sell ads for the Echo are Gwen Hansberry, Joyce Clay- ton and Jo Brandt. To the casual reader The Iicho was merely four sheets of paper with printed words and letters. But to the journalists who planned, wrote and edited that paper it had a real heart. Although most students saw The lfcho just every other week, for' the advanced journalists it was a part of every day's work. During the first few weeks, room 121 was a madhouse. Reporters and editors tore their hair and worried constantly how their stories would come out on lVednesday. Editors worked over time filling up blank spaces that appeared on those first proofs. The two weeks between issues always ended far too soon. The first two days were spent mostly in planning stories, pictures and page make-ups. The next Monday the work really began. Assignments were tacked on the bulletin board and reporters began scur- rying about, scratching up stories, interviewing, writing, typing, copy reading and setting up the dreaded headlines. Overtime became a habit when the deadline drew near. Both typewriters Reporters' Footsteps ehoed in Halls had a waiting line and Mr. Marvin Armstrong was snowed under by pleas for advice and help. Finally, on Friday the pages were rushed down to the llulm Printing Company, where the ed- itors explained their chicken scratches to the bewildered printers. Then two days before the paper was to come out, the printers sent back their version and the frantic journalists cor- rected the mistakes. After one more check, The licho was ready. XYednesday the staff filed through the door and grabbed the finished pro- duct that Mr. Armstrong tossed to them. The first few moments were tense and silent as editors and reporters examined the pages for the tiniest errors. At last, grateful sighs and a few groans were heard as bedlam broke out again. Businessmen who had advertisements in The licho received copies as well as special sub- scribers. Other journalism departments through- out Nebraska and as far away as California, recieved papers. In this manner the journalism Page 38 Vik. ww Mr. Marvin Armstrong Connie Sehnert, Bernadine Clinebell, Dee Mc- Connel, Dick Hudson and Barbara Lundin found that editing the cub edition of the Echo was fun but a lot of hard work. 51111101115 l0111'111-11 111 011111112110 o11101' high SC1lO01 llCWSl11lllCl'S with 1110 lf0l111. Mr. Jack Snider directs a rehearsal for the brass sextet which consists of Bob Jewett, Al Stover, Donald Munson and Gay- lon Mason. Not pictured are David Weeks and Gloria Darling. Mr. Jack Snider The long trip to the music clinic held in Scottsbluff, found eight of the members, Beth Keenan, Maren Henry, Marilyn Goldenstein, Della Murrish, Hethene Paul, 'lane Oelsehlager, Rosemary XVeeks and Marlene Alcorn, learning many orchestra techniques. The highlight of the year, was the mid- winter concert, which was held in February under the direction of Mr. Jack Snider. This concert featured such songs as Light Cavalry tlvertureu and Norwegian Dance No. -lv. Wvith XYilladean Deaver as the piano soloist they also presented tiershwin's Rhapsody in Blueu. Playing like professionals, the hand and or- chestra gave many fine performances. This year, the orchestra was very fortunate in having l'rofessor linnnanuel Xlishnow from the University of Nebraska as their guest con- ductor and soloist in November . Mr. XYishnow gave the orchestra an inspiration at their fall clinic and concert. He directed them and gave them pointers of great value. The orchestra practiced two hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon, after which they gave a public performance in the evening, Nlr. XYish- now directed and played a few solo iunnhers. nstrumental Groups Played 'Pretty' for the People 'l'he sixtyfeight pieee lmnml was the pricle :incl f joy of lsextrney lligh when they reeeiyeml their lnight new uniforms.
