V r DEDICA 1' ION Katharine Major To one who has dedicated her life to our school .... to one who has kept an eternal youth .... to one whose sunny philosophy has been infectious to both her students and fellow faculty members .... to Miss Katharine Major, we dedicate our golden anniversary Log. . Having been graduated in 1887, with the third class from Kearney High school, Miss Major returned to the system ten years lateras a teacher in the elementary grades. In 1927, she was transferred from the position of principal of Junior High, which she had held for several years, to librarian, where she continued to reach into our lives, urging and guiding us on to higher goals. Her vibrant personality, her invaluable sense of humor, and youthful outlook have molded Kearney High life and her students. May this be an expression of our true regard for Miss Katharine Major. Back in 1872, more than 50 years ago, as a result of the steadily increasing population, the people of Kearney turned 'Hotel Collins' into a six-month school with Miss Fanny Nevius, the teacher, and Oscar Hansen, principal. Two years later, the first senior class was graduated in a roller skating rink on Avenue A. In 1880 a school called XVhittier was erected where the Manual Arts building now stands and ten teachers employed-compared with the seventy, in the system today. This building, the best equipped in the state, was noted for its large belfry. In 1890, 365,000 was appropriated to add another building-the present Senior High, the north wing of which was added in 1912. In 1921, the present 'Whittier' building was erected and old NVhittier' became a Junior High. A new Junior High was built in 1925 and dedicated on September 24, 1926. This building was a result of years of continuous effort on the part of the late O. A. Wirsig. former superintendent. 1 The first superintendent, Mr. Miller, ended his position. in Kearney schools in 1885, and was succeeded by Miss M. I. Stuart, now deceased, who presided over the system from 1885 until 1888. I. Morey, who retired last year from the Omaha Technical High, was superintendent in 1888-1901.', A. O. Thomas, superintendent in 1901-1905, has gradually risen to one of the highest positions for an educator. He is, at present. president of the International Education Asso- ciation with headquarters in Wlashington, D. C., where he is now residing. Superintendent George Butgert, who headed the schools from 1905 to 1909, is in busi- ness in Lincoln, while his successor, Harry E. Bradford, at present head of the agricultural department at the University of Nebraska, was at the helm from 1909 to 1912. Roy E. Cochran, superintendent in the years 1912 to 1915, is in the history department in the State University. - . Superintendent A. L. Caviness, who directed the activities from 1915 to 1921, and Superintendent O. A. Wirsig from 1921 to 1932, the men who preceded our present super- intendent, Harry A. Burke, are both deceased. xr ou Superintendents at Kearney 1 Miss M. I. Stuart. 2 J. I. Morey. 3 A. 0. Thomas. 4 George Burgert. 5 Harry E. Bradford. 6 Roy E. Cochran. 7 A. L. Caviness. 8 O. A. A. degree from Stanford Uiiiversity and his work nearly completed for a Doctor's from Columbia. The entire system of Kearney schools has undergone a definite change under the super- vision of Mr. Burke. He has proved himself worthy of his position in a system which has such an outstanding background as has Kearney's. r hr Principal R. H. Carter, who this year took over the position of registrar along with his regular duties as principal, was graduated from Doane College, was a student of the University of Nebraska and will receive his Nl. A. degree from Unis'ersity of Southern California with six weeks more work. Mr. Carter is the head sponsor of the Student Advisory Board, National Honor Society and Hi-Y. During this year, his fourth in Kearney High, Mr. Carter has introduced a new registration system and has assisted Mr. Burke in his revision of school regulations. As an acknowledgement of their journalistic and scholastic abilities, five new members were accepted by the National Quill and Scroll secretary. Those accepted were Richard Hart- ford, Bill McNulty, Lewise Lunger, Mary Frances NVittera and Shirley Heacoclc. Miss Mary Nichols, journalism instructor, is the sponsor with Lila Wollam, Maxine Rossen, and Mar- guerite Neustrom, second year members of the honorary. In order to gain admittance to this organization, students must rank scholastically in the upper one-third of their respective classes, and have journalistic ability, recommendation of instructor, and approval of the national secretary. H Q W W 5 With Mrs. Mabel Scoutt and NV. G. Ingram as sponsors, seventeen students became charter members of the Kearney National Honor Society in 1924. During the eleven years of its existence, 123 students, now alumni, have been honored by membership in this organization. Because of the late announcement of the members of this society, the members have no main activity, but have an annual picnic with the alumni of the organization in June. The members are Marguerite Bass, Geraldine Benzler, Maxineflocksin, Dale Donaly, Irene Erwin, Melvin Glantz, Marjorie Gotobed, Gerald Griess, Gerow Heacoclc, Mary Evelyn Hibberd, Lela Htlffsttltter, John Kendall, Logan Lancaster, Pete Mitchell, Sidney Morrison, Harold Mueller, Marguerite Neustrom, Maxine Rossen, Ruth Samuelson, Ruth Sherer, Helen Shields and Patricia Sullivan. Principal R. H. Carter sponsored the group this year. Public recognition of the students of National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll came on Honor Day, May 9. 1 Page Thirty f ve uill and Scroll Back Row-Heacock, Hartford, Lunger, McNulty, Wittera. Pago Thirty-six Student Advisory Board Since 1916 Kearney High has had a form of student government which is now known as the Student Advisory Board. Headed by an all-school president who is selected by popular vote, the council has four senior, three junior and two sophomore members. Sidney Morrison as president, Maxine Rossen as treasurer and Marguerite Bass as secretary led this year's group under the supervision of Principal R. H. Carter. Other mem- bers are Logan Lancaster and Elton Mercer, seniors, Patsy Hamer, Weston Wolcott and Lucile Vlfirsig, juniors, and Janice Wfimberley and Billy VVoodworth, sophomores. In addition to having a voice in school policies, the council planned the program of entertainment for activity ticket holders and sponsored Honor Day, a new feature in Kear- ney High. At the Honor Day program on the afternoon of May 9, all students who had done outstanding work in scholastic fields, athletics, music, dramatics or journalism were given public recognition. Letters and awards of all natures were presented by teachers and sponsors for their respective departments at this time. J 5232 33 Girls' Club Council Composed of five senior, four junior, and three sophomore girls, the Girls' Club Coun- cil sponsors two events annually, the Ivlother and Daughter Tea and the May Fete. Though the girls of each of the three classes in the Senior High make the selection of council members, the girls on the council select their own officers who work with the head sponsor, Miss Alta Kibler, and her assistants, Misses Alta Kirsch, Lois Grandstaff, Alice Parsons and Hazel Panek. This year the girls elected Ruth Samuelson as president and Mary Evelyn Hibberd, secretary. Other seniors on the council are Marguerite Bass, Betty Bower and Ruth Shererg juniors, Patsy Hamer, Shirley Heacoclc, Jane Johnson and Lucile Wirsigg and sophomores, Virginia Buol, Anna Jane Huffstutter and Janice Wimberley. At the Mother-Daughter tea, held at the Junior High on Saturday, April 29, the mothers of the high school girls and those of the faculty women were guests of their daughters. Members of the Girls Club made arrangements for the entertaining program and re- ception which preceded serving of tea. Ruth Samuelson gave the daughters' welcome and Mrs. Vern Bower, the mothers' response. At the May Fetc held May 1, the Queen and the Maid of Honor were presented in traditional fashion with Maxine Rossen and Geraldine Benzler, senior attendants, Jeanette Samuelson and Margaret Cary, junior attendants, and Betty Graham and Suzanne Stearns, sophomore attendants. j Preceding the crowning ceremonies, 100 girls of the Senior High presented the Basque pageant, Dance of Fate, directed by Miss Hazel Panel: who was Kearney's first May Queen in 1925. Helen Ayers, Jane Johnson, Grace Spongherg and Lucile Wirsig carried the leading roles. Music A Directed by Miss Elizabeth Cummings, vocal instructor, and Arthur -Harrell, instru- mental instructor, the music department has ranked highest by bringing home laurels for Kearney High in its fiftieth year. Q Although Kearney musicians lost the sweepstakes in the '33 State contest to Hastings by a one-point margin, the fact that they won the sweepstakes in this year' s district marks their supremacy in this district for the third consecutive year. The four large groups, band, orchestra, chorus and glee club, each won a superior rating with five small groups-boys' quartet, girls' quartet, mixed quintet, string quartet, and brass sextet-also winning superior. Three soloists-Barbara Hart, for low voice, John Kendall for violin and Leland Olsen for cornet-won superiors with Patricia Sullivan, high voice soloist, Lawrence Rice, clarinet soloist, and the woodwind quintet receiving excellent ratings. The small vocal groups included the boys, quartet with Logan Lancaster, Alvin Arnold, George Mastalka and Paul Reddy, the girls' quartet, Patricia Sullivan, Marguerite Neu- strom, 'Barbara Hart and Gwen Schrack, and the mixed quintet, Elaine Malowney, Mar- guerite Neustrom, Gwen Schrack, Logan Lancaster and Alvin Arnold. In the instrumental division, the brass group members were Leland Olsen, Logan Lan- caster, Warren Worley, Spencer Elliott, Jerome Wfimberley and Walter Lancaster, while the string group included John Kendall, Imogene Sears, Sarah Lee Weld and Phyllis Reese. The woodwind quintet members were Amelita Barney, Ellis Fraser, Spencer Elliott, Mar- garet Cary and Irene Erwin. Vivian Henline, Elaine Donaly, Maxine Clocksin and Irene Erwin were the accom- panisrs. The girls' glee club costumes this year were white silk skirts and pastel silk blouses, while the chorus members wore choir robes. The chorus participated in a Spring Music Festival in which nearly a thousand people, directed by Fuhr, performed in Hastings, May 7 and 8. ' . During the year, several Sunday afternoon vesper concerts were given by the music de- partment for the public. Miss Cummings' and Mr. Harrell's exceptional directing talent is shown in the groups which they have turned out this year and in former years. 5 May F ete In order to keep her identity a secret, it was impossible to honor the tenth annual May Queen in this annual. In 1925, Hazel Panek was chosen by her classmastes to be the first May Queen of Kearney High. The following girls are representatives of our school as May Queens known for their character, scholarship, personality and high ideals: Helen Cruit, 1926, Ruth Sitorious, 1927, June Sear, 1928, Lucille Anderson, 1929, jo Pierce, 1930, Betty Finke, 1931, jean Work, 1932, and Clarabel Stanford, 1933. Each year before crowning of the Queen by the Maid of Honor, a pageant, in which the girls in Kearney High participate, is given. Page Th rty n n Choir Back Row-Brandt, I. Osborne, W. Lawson, V. For the first time, that honor was conferred on the Kearney Echo last year by the National Scholastic Press Association. Elias Wright, a prominent lawyer in Seattle, Washington, was, in 1899, the editor of the first ublication in Kearne I-Ii h, The uid Est, a a r which was then an P Y g P Pe eight-page monthly. It retained this form until 1909 when it became the Echo, edited by Edgar Hale, and changed to a four-page edition. With Archer Lerch as editor, it became again an eight-page publication with a special edition in May. That special number was the first form of an annual in Kearney. In 1911, the Echo was enlarged to a 36-page monthly with the annual edition. The year-book took its present form in 1913, continuing the name of the Echo. The Blue and Gold was its name in 1923, but it was changed the following year to its present name, the Log. Last year, edited by Jean Sawyer, the paper, the Kearney Echo, won many honors, in- cluding the loving cup given by the Midland College to the winner in the Tri-State Press Contest. Lila Wollam and Maxine Rossen, as editor and managing editor of the Kearney Echo, have worked incessantly this year to make the paper one the class of '34 can be proud of. Roger Grosh has handled the finances of the publication as business manager with efficiency while the rest of the staff have cooperated with the heads and with Miss Mary Nichols, the sponsor, to improve their talents and to publish an Echo which will win many honors for the school. The golden anniversary Log is a product of the efforts of a staff of workers, headed by Marguerite Neustrom, editor, Richard Hartford, managing editor, and Maxine Rossen, assistant managing editor. Working with the business manager, Bill McNulty, the editorial staff has attempted to publish a year-book which is a fitting marker for half a century of growth for the Kearney High School. Page Furry-foul' , Drama Shirt Sleeves, a three-act comedy dealing with modern conditions, was the offering of the juniors at the Junior High auditorium February 9. Miss Alice Parsons directed the play, deemed by play-goers an outstanding high school production. Franklin and Julia Rand, played by Jack Lanigan and Lucile Wfirsig, headed the fam- ily and Cast as father and mother. Their financial and spiritual trials as parents of a quar- tet of normal happy young folks were typical of parents' problems the nation over. Despite their youth, the twins Bob Tollefsen and jane Johnson, helped to bring a happy ending to family difficulties at the same time that they entertained the audience. The Completes cast included the other Rand children, Harry Clayton and Wylma Stan- ton, and the outsiders, Patricia Hamer, Mary Frances Xwittera, Charlotte Malowney, Cecil Martin, John May, William Knoll, Lily Anderson, Dean Stemas, Duane Hedrix, Floyd Tuffs, Elizabeth Johnson and Helen Schmitz. Under the direction of Miss Lois Grandstaff, nine students competed in the local de- clamatory contest held here in March. Durward Burwell, Margaret Cary and Bernice Mei-ryman won first places in oratorical, humorous and dramatic divisions, respectively. These three, together with members of the cast for The Master Maker, represented Kearney High in the sub-district held here. In that Bernice and the play cast won first hon- ors, making them eligible for the district contest at North Platte, April 20. Members of the One-act play cast were Lucilc Wirsig, Bill McNulty, Durward Bur- well, Sidney Morrison and Kenneth Holstein. In the local contest, Sidney Morrison and Gerald Griess entered the oratoricalg Ema Jane Barney and Dorothy Scheeler, the humorous, and Marjorie Gotobed and Eudeane Barber, the dramatic. 5 With Eudeane Barber in the leading role, the seniors presented The Royal Family at the Junior High auditorium May 11. The production was directed by Miss Lois Grandstaff. The entire play centered around the life of a great family of the American stage, the Cavendish family. Fanny Cavendish, the central figure, was, in her seventieth year, the leader and ruler of the family. The role of her daughter, julie who was at the height of her career, was carried by Gwen Schraclc while the part of Dean, the brother who was beginning to decline, was portrayed by Dale Donaly. Tony, the popular young actor of the family, was ably played by Dur- ward Burwell. ' Other members of the cast were Betty Bower, Sidney Morrison, Bernice Merryman, Dick Hartford, Gerald Griess, Raymond Cleland, Helen Shields, Otto Griess, Harold Mueller, Dilworth Jones, Jack Shofstall, Mary Evelyn Hibberd and Don Thornton. Each year, the Girl Reserves sponsor a Christmas party at which 100 local chil- dren are the guests. An annual breakfast is given in honor of the Senior Girl Reserves, who, at the last regular meeting, are given Girl Reserve rings for their faithful service in the club. Marguerite Bass, president, and Miss Helen Frunclell, head sponsor, have lead the ninety girls in the club, assisted by Marguerite Neustrom, vice president, Helen Ayres, secretaryg Lolus Porter, treasurerg and Miss Eva Phalen, Miss Alta Kirsch and Miss Lois Grandstaff, assistant sponsors. I-i 32 S2 The Kearney chapter Hi-Y was organized in 1924, but was suspended in 1931 and re- organized this year when the Holdrege chapter initiated the cabinet, headed by Dale Donaly as president. John Kendall, Gerald Griess and Paul Reddy are cabinet members. Sponsored by R. H. Carter, the members have planned meetings and discussions which interest them personally. The purpose of this club 'corresponds with that of the Girl Reserves-to main- tain a higher standard of Christian living among the students of the school. I X353 To create a desire for higher scholarship among the commercial students is the pur- pose of the Commercial Club, which is sponsored by Russell M. Wilkie and Miss Theresa Grantham, and presided over by Maxine Clocksin. Commercial Club originated in Kearney High in 1925. The club sponsored as its yearly project the District Commercial contest which was held in the Junior High auditorium, March 30. The shorthand team composed of Helen Shields, Geraldine Benzler, and Mabel XVebster won first place in the district and went to the state contest. The annual Commercial Club banquet was held April 4, with Maxine Clocksin, toast- mistress, and Grant Thomas, Helen Shields, Ruth Samuelson and Bill McNulty, speakers. Si 32 25 In its six years, the Science Club has gathered the best students from the chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics classes for its members. Miss Eva Phalen and Gerald Griess, head sponsor and president, respectively, have planned the monthly meetings of the club to provide information and entertainment. Talks by members on lives and works of famous scientists, short reels on scientific subjects and discussions by sponsors have made up most of the programs. In accord with its purpose, the club strives to inspire its members to keep abreast of the times in scientific fields. El il' Ml I! IW IW Organized in 1924, the Latin Club has maintained prominence in the social life of Kear- ney High under Miss Alice Parsons, the head sponsor. At football games, the members had charge of decorations and programs. The football banquet, held this year in late November, was a farewell to Coach Tom Elliott and a welcome to the present coach, Harlan Wyant. Introducedtby Toastmaster Shofstall, Coaches Elliott, Wyant and Hill gave short talks, followed by Dick Hale who expressed Kearney's appreciation of Elliott's work in Kearney. 5 The Girls' Athletic Associationis duty is to sponsor all girls, sports, according to the regulations of the Nebraska League of Girls' Athletic Associations. This .year the club, or- ganized in 1924, promoted a very successful play day to which girls from neighboring towns were invited. A banquet in the evening climaxed the activities of the day for the Kearney girls and their guests. All plays for the initial play day were made by committees appointed by the president, Ruth Sherer, and supervised by the sponsor, Miss Hazel Panek. I I 3- I-.51 With William Knoll as president and Harlan XVyant as sponsor, the KH club has fur- thered its objective-to keep sports clean. After a lapse of several years the K Club was re- organized last spring under Coach Tom Elliottis supervision. XVorking with Knoll as offi- cers of the club were Roger Grosh, vice president, and Dick Hale, secretary-treasurer. In Tom's four and a half years in Kearney, he produced many outstanding teams and won a place in the lives of high school students that was hard to fill. Coach Harlan Wyant came from several years of very successful work in Gothenburg to take Tom's place. After an excellent grid season with the Swedes, he put the Bearcat hasketeers through the paces in such a way that they went through the regional tournament and into the state meet. After spending three weeks with spring football practice, Coach Vlyant took over the duties of chief track coach. Under his supervision, the junior and sophomore track and field men showed up so well that they brought home honors for Kearney High in several meets. In speaking of Wyant as a track coach, Coach Henry Schulte, track mentor at the University of Nebraska, said, Your new coach, Harlan Wyant, is one of the few who send us track men, properly trained. His men do not have to 'unlearn' his teachings. Kearney High expects a good record in sports under Mr. Wyant's guidance in the coming year when he gets to know his men.
