DORIS CULVER ' A 'MVIS- 18' It is with great pride that the Senior class of l958 dedicates this book to our beloved Mrs. Doris Culver. Having been the faculty adviser of both the yearbook and our newspaper, Skyline, Mrs. Culver has devoted much time and energy to these publications. Thus, our gratitude represents not only the present Senior class, but it embodies also the thank-you's of past Seniors who owed their outstanding yearbooks and newspapers to the able guidance of Mrs. Culver. ln these years she has always modestly refused all public recognition of her endless efforts, and therefore has never been adequately thanked. One of the few remaining Charter Members of Long Island City High, Mrs. Culver has resisted offers from other schools in order to stay with the pupils for whom she shows such high regard. She has found the years of working with seniors on Plaza and Skyline both a worthwhile and gratifying experience. The results of her efforts always set the high standard which we hope to meet this year, The past staffs of both publications have learned from her shining example not only the ways and means of publishing, but also cooperation with fellow members. Long after Plaza will be but a part of high school memories the latter trait will remain part of them, and us, as the living proof that the goal for which she aimed was successfully reached. Today, as always, her gay, friendly personality and winning smile have made our Mrs. Culver the pride of the students and the faculty alike. Beloved by all who have come in conact with her, Mrs. Culver will live in the memory of her pupils not only as an inspiring teacher, but as a true friend. To you, Mrs. Culver, in gratitude we dedicate Plaza 1958. Our Principal 257' Dear Graduates, In the name of the faculty of this school,I should like to extend to you our congratulations on your graduation. Vile also wish you the best of good health and good fortune in the future. You have worked hard to reach this significant point in your career. We trust that you will also remember the loyalty, love, and devotion of your parents in helping you to succeed. They, too, are to be congratulated at this time. For some of you this is a time of major transition. From a life of schools, teachers, and studies you are turning to a life of employers and work. For some of you this is a change to a higher and more difficult form of education. In either case, we hope that you will be well prepared for the change. You have been given a thorough education in all of the aspects of life vital to the perpetuation of our democratic form of government. You are now closer to that time when you will Hll a more important position in this world than you ever did previously. Make a good job of it! in MR. A school consists not only of students, class rooms and books, but of hard work, vast amounts of study, of hopes and plans and memories. Among our fondest memories will always be the men and women who have guided us so ably and patiently through these past four years. XVe have all passed through the hands, and hearts, of many ol the teachers who chose Long Island City High to receive the benelits of their many talents. Among those whom you see on these pages are many whom you have loved, as did I, in your years at L.l.C. The teachers here have been striv- v r 11 if H X Q ax 4? ' -. ' D L 1.1 V, ' f- mf 'Q A? They have each tried to give a little bit of themselves to us. XVe have learned from their hne example, most of all, how to conduct ourselves and to think in a manner becoming model citizens and adults. VVhat we are to become in years to follow will be based a great deal on the moulding, teaching and friendship of the faculty of Long Island City High School. i 'N - From each and every one of us in the Seniorcgsnfj P Class of 1958: Thank You! . f ,lv WF' V Q X- ftp A A' NJ' O X li 'wel W as' we gclz ini NAME Peter Anzalone Billy Aronwald Marie Belavenetz Steve Bergman Claire Bernstein Norma Bertini Bette Jean Blake Winnie Bisbee Sandy Cacace Dotty Calo Grace Candalino Tom Cardarelli jean Cavaliere joe Cavilla Nick Chihlas Kathy Collins Aglaia Constantine Trent Conelias Al Crespo Albina Criscuolo juan Cuadrado Agnes Custance Robert Devan Lorraine Dollar Bob Erland Carole Ferruggio Suzanne Fisher Judy Fitzmaurice Carol Ford George Iiraftigos FAMOUS FOR Clowning around Big Bill Her engagement ring Balancing organic equations, chemistry Dancing all night Being tallest girl in L.l.C. J-Q ' 4 ...W 4 Q U 6 ' l 'N-x NVe are sitting at the top, the highest step on the ladder, the Senior Class of '58. lt has been a long hard clin1b lor us. Now we can Hnally sit back a moment and look proudly at what we have accomplished. The years at Long Island City Higl1 have been lour years ol' progress and success lor both the school and each student. In the course ol our study, L. I, C. has developed a new structure, a new lace, and as a result it has helped us to develop a new spirit of perseverance and responsibility toward our work and our school. Let's take a last look at the memories we are leaving behind. A Monday, for us September lfi, 19541, was our Iirst day as frightened freshmen in the new school. Cautiously we made our way through the halls in lear of bumping into one of those gigantic Seniors, whose prestige we hoped to obtain as the years progressed. Remember our lirst lreshmen council and the excitement of our very own recep- tion, the big Halloween Dance and the thrill ol' seeing our first Basketball game against Bryant High? We were host to a student lrom Denmark in the Tribune's Annual Youth Forum: what excitement! Things really began to move, and our dream of high school began to untold lor us. 1 J 'Q e X Our sophomore year was one of split sessions, getting home at live o'clock. Reconstruction was in lull swingg stairways coming up, plaster falling down, new exits, no desks, dripping paint, broken windows. But with all this we managed to squeeze in a wonderful Soph reception, basketball games and some really ter- rific dances. XVe proudly took top honors at the Royal Sweetheart Dance, with all the schools in Queens competing. Our contes- tants emerged victorious with the Titles Queen ol Teens and Best Band of Queens. L. I. C. began to acquire a new look. YVe, too,had a new look-smiling promoted faces. Entrez Junior year. 1. .M f, f E l l l 1 We were quite proud of our sleek new school with the desks, paint, P. A. sys- tem, and her new modern air. Vlfe showed it with a really wonderful junior year. The highlight was a wonderful basketball season, leaving our Plazamen just one game removed from emerging victorious and dribbling its way into Madison Square Garden. There was March 15th, when pale faced, black-clad seniors walked through the school mourning the death olf the immortal Julius Caesar. We once again had our G. O. assemblies and we saw some really big shows. Three big bands just brought down the house in a jumping jazz concert that was long to be remembered. Remember our exclusive Stork Club Dance with a guest appearance from Patience and Prudence!?l It brought fun filled talk for weeks later. Our first Miss G. O., Carol Norton, was chosen at the Moonlight Dance and we whirled our way right into our Senior year. 14 Y if ?i55?f?fSf'ffie'YF 'Yi isvsw X 1.1 5 v 5 Y . , 5 v Fl ' l , st raw .. it ,Z i ' ff? 3, :V ...N 39 ,, ..? XVe enthusiastically elected Jimmy Mc- Carthy, Tucho Rodriguez, Diane Zaleski and Joanne Romano as our senior ofhcers,President, V. P., Secretary, and Treasurer respectively. Our G. O. olhcers during the senior year were: President George Frangos, Vice'President Daniel Seltzer, Secretary Joan Peterson, Treasurer Carol Ford, eighth term representa- tives jean La Rocca and Dorothy Calo. YVe had an added attraction of Asian Flu, and remember our remarkable friend Sputnick? Yet the year wasn't without its downlalls-Those impossible Regents, the problems we could never see our way through. But somehow we managed them all. As we look behind at the rough and the smooth, we are proud of the work we've done and what we have come through to reach the top step-the very top. Yet have we really come to the end, the last step in what we are striving for? This ladderkol trial, of learning, of experience!-we are climbing, ends at suc- cess in whatever life we chooseg that is the final step, the top. lille are still a long way from it. If, in the course of our lives, we could be lucky enough to achieve on a more mature scale the progress, benefits and happiness we have known here at Long Island City, all of us would surely reach the peak of success with the key to individual happiness and the world in our hands. 15 Si sl A Q W-3? ec X .5 gas X gel is .4 ' tg li s 1 1 S39 5 s T YK E .i Q, . Treasurer Farewell . . . l As Freshmen entering Long Island City High School four years ago, our class was filled with apprehension regarding the new subjects and teachers we were about to meet. NVe entered into these new responsibilities amidst the temporary chaos of the modernization of the building. Having just become adjusted to some slight degree, we were then banished to the Annex and the outlook be- came even more dim. However, this was not lor long . . . for, having survived our apprenticeship in the Annex with the help and understanding of our teachers and the hue spirit of the students we once again joined the main body of the school. XVe joined the ranks in feeling great pride in the beautiful modern physical aspect of our school. But, more important, we gained a sense ol' security and community re- sponsibility which we will carry with us wherever we go. Our school has helped us to acquire the qualities which are essential to a citi- zen in a democracy. Through the dillerent activities in which we participated we were able to help our school but more important, we were developing a sense of responsibility and sell' direction which will enrich our adult life. Xlle have gained many new friends, some ol whom will remain close to us in the future. To Mr. Sessler, and all the members ol' Long Island City High School faculty, on behalf of our entire graduating class .... may l thank you for the ideals of civic, social and moral responsibility which you have imparted to us, as well as, i the sense of security with which to implement them. james Mc Carthy Senior President 1 Q Q g , if l 1 I A J Q, '12 ff 'f - ' ,x ff 2 1 xl SJ , ,Qi I sl X' f .N ,f f ' ia i w J 3 I 1 55.10 ,f - r 0 'Lp if-iw P MQ of m.v'G' 'W gy Minor ESS'--- ' .L My b WA-rw,,,,M ,,,,--2 .-0--1,.,...-4 -it-:::fW,,,..wW A N H gca-moot. one 'SLA 9 csff W6 L Dfxvif' 'V O,qZS5'V P54 27 CQ 'Pd' QQA Q, ty? I leave it to you, the reader, to choose whichever title suits you best. Each and every one of them is appropriate for my homeroom. The first definitely explains itself, and, as you may well suspect, I am first going to mention our teacher, Mrs. Relin. Her rush hour is between 10:04 and 10: 19 a. m., which happens to be the homeroom period. Mrs. Relin, who, incidentally, is five feet tall and probably the smallest teacher in the city, is expected to take attendance, send out post cards to the homes of the absentees, make out an absentee list, make all announcements necessary, Qrnost of which are QUIET!l Q and settle the program- ming difliculties of each pupil. All this is to be done in fifteen minutes. She does have some help from her de- pendable service aids, Susan Lee and Vivian Calia. Now let's move on to the next title, Relin's Ram- bler's. According to lVebster's dictionary, to ramble is to go from place to place without definite object. The students who run around like chickens with their heads cut off are: Robert Unterburger, Douglas Siemers, jerry Spindler, Edward Sucich, Vinnie Tedesco, joseph Vaccarp, and Robert Kozachenko. Our next title presents a problem. Mr. Webster says that a radical is a person desiring thorough reforms. Al- though some pupils often say they would like changes in the school system, I am certain that they realize how impossible their wishes are. Some of these radicals that I mention are in my homeroom class. Eugene Straussberg is the No. l radical, then come jon Steinmetz, Carl Rogers and Bob Shaw. These four are conspiring to close the schools down, but they work to no avail. On return to the dictionary we find that rampage means a state of excitement. This definitely describes the majority of the girls. First there are Pauline Szymal- Wlllll v 1515? Wax 'ln f ski, Ann Sturm, and Penny Tolentino. These three girls are always sitting in the far corner, away from everyone, and only that corner knows what they talk about. Then there's Ethel Pitkowitz, Marion Simon, Connie LaRanger, and Eleanor Tamborskie. They are the intellectual group of the class, always talking about College English, scholarships, college and college stu- dents fespecially boysj . In the next corner we find the co-captain of the Cheer- ing Squad, Elly Ghicas. She's usually talking about a basketball game that's coming up, doing homework or trying to get away to speak to a friend in another class. Next to Elly is Kathy Collins QTom Collins' sisteri. She's usually doing homework that was left over from the night before or wondering il shell be getting history homework for the next day. Then theres Agnes Yourkas who just sits quietly, writes in her notebook and gathers in all that's being said. lncidentally, we also have a few who just sit around and use up oxygen. They don't talk much, don't do homework- they don't do anything. They just sit there, BUT their minds are at work. joe Truhon could be thinking of a basketball game that's coming up since he's one of the Still' players on the school team. Dennis Penn is another one who is always thinkingf?-well, he's always quiet anyway. George Turturro is another quiet one. Elizabeth Conti, who's always combing her locks, puts Dorothy Rader on guard to watch if Mrs. Relin is Looking Then they change guards. This time Dorothy combs her hair while Liz stands guard. Then we have our happy wanderers who are never anywhere near their homeroom class. Once attendance is checked, the first to go is Terrence Byrne. His excuse is always the same: important business. Sam Stimmel is the next to leave the class, but his absence from home- room is justified with the fact that he is our senior re- presentative, which means that he usually has meetings to go to or some other such business. by A Elaia Consla ntinc '6Ladies and Gentlemen, May I Have Your Attention Please Introducing to you, one of the most celebrity-filled homerooms on the East Side, 7-0l6E! May we go to the Senior Council Meeting? says Jimmy McCarthy fpresj jo Ann Romano Qtreasurerj and Dee Zaleski fsecretaryj. May I go too? pops up Joe Cavilla who is the Pres. of the G. O. Here comes Lorraine Klein, I have to go to a special meeting of the Senior Reps, she says, when she is not trying to convince someone of the advantages and benefits of paying his Senior Dues. Vlell, look what is going on over in the other aisle. Ann Trinker, Linda Misa, Dee Zaleski, and Jo Ann Romano Qcapt. of the cheerleadersj are practicing the cheers with Linda Carcara from the squad. Frank Ortiz, capt. of the Basketball Team, looks on with an approving smile. The big debate going on about Sputnik and Muttnick will usually revolve around Edward, Bob, Vincent, and Richard. At one table while Susan and Marie are busy finding out from Joyce Qsince she has History the first periodj what the agenda for the day was, Ann is busy trying to finish her homework before the bell rings. You are sure to find Kathryn and Valerie sitting in seclu- sion studying for that big exam. Silence Please! Edward, Pete, Robert, and Gunter are sure to be arguing about something. The two Barbara's and Genevieve-Silence Again! And there goes Andy, the wondering soul. Approaching the rear of the cafeteria a great masterpiece of figures looms ahead of us. Homeroom 7-01812 is being seated by their mas- ter painter Mrs. Gallanter. In her gallery there is quite an assortment of students. They differ in many ways, but they are all of the modern class. They have been associated with one an- other for three years, struggling through thick and thin, but always as a whole. The first thing we notice is that the assort- ment of students is a little bit abstract funbal- ancedj. You see, the poor fellas' are outnumbered by the dominating sex, 25-5. The first figure that is visible to all is Mary A. This is the group's money gatherer. But, she is forgiven as she is Senior Rep. Alas, she has goofed, for she is having difficulty getting the seniors to pay their dues. The next figure who appears is Norma B., G. O. Rep. She is at this moment being bothered by Glory Ann L. who hasn't received her G. O. button. But we are quite sure that Norma will come out on topg Qespecially since she is 5' 9 j. lVe take notice of a small group of B'S . They all seem to be buzzin' about somethin'. VVith Andrienne B. it is hard to tell as she is the 'Quiet One. XVinifred B. is using her sales- rnanship in collecting donations for the Christ- mas stocking, Linda B. seems to have been struck by something very funny, but this is not unusual. She is always wearing a friendly smile. Poor Dottie B. seems to have put up with it all. At the next table a fine collection of C's are gathered. Aida C. is busy watching Evelyn C. as she makes her daily rounds from table to table. Dottie C. and Agnes C. are in their usual morn- ing gab fest. Helen K. and Carol K. are in a heated discus- sion concerning developments within Arista. Got a call at 9:59 to go down to the Mfest Cafe- teria to keep an eye on 7-02lXfV. My two secre- taries Helen S. and Stacy R. kept tabs on the class while I was scrutinizing Lola P. who was practicing her jumps and cheers. Before I got a chance to investigate Dotty Phillips threw the rolfbook at me and down I went at the count of Eve. Over at the far end of the homeroom I heard a mysterious buzzing and climbed over the bodies lying in my way to find that it was only Carol R. discussing letters from her boy- friend, who attends out-of-town college, with Susan R. and Mary Lou R. Methinks I detected a spy in our midst, but, alas, it was only Trudy B. reciting her French. While mingling with the crowd I discovered Roy A. drawing triangles and squares and wri- ting down vital information. I thought I had the culprit, but I discovered that the triangles were only Geometry homework. Got the facts and called my superior officer. I report in every fifteen minutes, so John Pfs Dick Tracy watch, which is as accurate as any Dick Tracy watch can be, came in handy. My superior was worried for fear that I'd suffer a nervous breakdown but I assured him that I had everything under control. I thought I did until l heard Jackie P. playing strange and haunting rcfrains on her clarinet. My bodyguard, Stan P., went out for a drink of water, and I was left alone in the lion's den. Over in another homeroom, which is con- sidered foreign territory, I found Tony P. mull- ing over important documents which looked like they required the brain of yours truly, and I offered my services only to be turned down. It seems Tony can accomplish this all by himself. IfVhile my back was turned, Grace F. collected the roll books and went back to rehashing with Gerry G. and Judy Ann L. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Ed. M. and Dave T. spruced up for their service squad duties, while I wrote out a late pass for Flo P. just as a precautionary mea- sure. I checked out at 9:19 and reported to work. Every now and then I saw one of them wan- dering around in a daze. I shuddered and thought, Can this be real or am I dreaming? c N rafilv 4 ,311 Vi ax. 3 'D wine elif f girls f If 7 ll it ..,, em V N996 -7 ' 5 9 g af it T ave Couch, Will Listen By joni Golub Doctor, what's wrong? . . . Edition: First and Last Edited By: Martha Peters . Published: 1958 ???????? Our teacher, Miss Marilyn Cohn, is the best home-room teacher in the school. That is, perhaps, why you always see our end of the cafeteria in the midst of a minor riot. However, we have no com- plaints. She has been patient with us throughout the nerve-racking years, always ready to assist us when we needed assistance, sometimes spending hours going over our records. Aside from the home-room class, very few pupils see what she has to go through with us. Most of the students know her as their art teacher. She gave up a Hourishing career in the world of adver- tising art to come to teach us something. Some of us have learned what she taught, some of us haven't. Nevertheless, she has taken all of this in stride and never given up hope. We will be forever grateful and appre- ciative of what she did and we hope that future classes will regard her as highly as we do. Singing, Clzeering, Fashion, OR j0e??? lt seems Cheerleader Carol Ferruggio doesnt know quite what to do. This is her second year with the leaders and also her last because this june she graduates. After graduation she would like to go into the held of designing womens clothes, However, it is more probable that she will settle down to wedded bliss with joe. One of her highest hopes!! However, recently a new career has formed. It all started last year when Carol was in Mrs. Reli11's chorus. She was asked to solo in a few assemblies and gladly obliged. Since then, Diane Zalenski, Blaine Fontana, our senior rep., Nancy Gentile and Carol have formed a quartet. We had the pleasure of hearing them at the Senior Reception. Already they seem to be on their way to the top of the ladder. Here's hoping that they make it and keep on composing such songs as Tonight and Where Are You. A little advice to Carol from the class: Take your time in choosing your career, because if you don't it may mean a lifetime sentence of agony. But, don't take too long or it may be too late! Note to Readers: All of this did not necessarily come from those spoken about. There- fore, may all mistakes or mis- representations be forgiven. Thank you! Your Plaza Representative. Some Comments on Sputnik From the Boys!! Andrew Ludanyi: To me it means that we must do our best to catch up with and surpass Russian progress. As soon as possible he intends to be- come a freedom tighter and I only wish that there were more people in this world who knew what it is like under communist rule so that they would do every- thing in their power to pre- vent this from happening.
