3 WA 4 IJ irc: f f x C7 '1 fxfiflf' LONG LONG AGO' Robert Brutt1ng The massive stone structure of Lon5 Island C1ty H1gh School 1S d1ffCT6Ut Slght from the llttle red schoolhouse of years ago Looking upon the hundreds of students roam 1n her halls everyday, one would hardly belleve that Long Island C1ty High School's entlre student body numbered only a llttle more than half the average home room class of today F1fty two years ago Lonb Island Clty Hlgh School was slmolv and experlment but that experlment meant a great deal to the people of Lonb Island Clty Cltb of 1ts slze 1n New York State that d1dn't already have a hlgh shcool so 1n 1889 the f1rst step to remedy th1s SltUBt1OD was taken A pet1t1on was drawn up by a group of about flfty C1t1Z9DS and lt was presented to Mayor P J Gleason Realizlng the lmportance of the matter the mayor lost no tlme ln submlttlng the SUgg6St1OH to the Board of Bducatwon On February f1rst of that year the board gave the necessary word for the formatlon of a new school Cn March 6 1889, 1n Smithonlan Hall, at the corner of Vernon Avenue and Fourth Street, the new school was opened The f1rst calss conslsted of twenty two pupmls who were taught for a Derlod of three months The publlc was ln favor of the soho 1 so the course was lncreaded to three vears and then to four, as requ1red by the Board of Regents of the Un1vers1ty of the State of New York By October there were nearly slxty students attendlnb the school, but the quarters were small and the 11ght was bad for thls rea son the school was moved to the hall at Eleventh Street and Jack son Avenues Twenty days after, the school agaln found ltself crowded and th1s t1me lt moved to a bulldlng on the north s1de of Grand Avenue After havlng been pushed around for qu1te a whlle the first graduatlon class had 1ts commencement exerc1ses on July 1 1891 The attendance lncreased and on September 29, 1891 there were one hundred four students on the register even thou h Regents were lnstalled on May 9 1893, the en rollment 1ncreased In September 1897 a new four year course went lPtO effect and th1s was the Off1C1a1 act that made Long Island C1ty Hlvh known as a hlgh school Then on Aprll 4 1904, after more than ten year: 1n the Munson Bu1ld1ng, the school was moved to a new bU11d1Dg at Dutch H1118 Long Island Clty A short tlme after mOV1Hg 1nto the new bulldlng the schoo1's name was changed to W11l1am Cullen Bryant Hlgh School In September 1939 Bryant H gh School moved to a new location and lnto the old bulldlng came a new staff of teachers Wlth th1s rew staff came our hlStOT1C and memorable name, NLOKG ISLAND CITY HIGH SCHOOL 'Author's Note Mater1al for thls history was taken from a book entitled QUEENS 1850 1900, wr1tten by the Queens Chamber of Commerce L E 3 E W E E E E E E g m 451211 Lluiifnv llllllllllfflhlffs-ini: ' I V v wr v v v v v 7 v v- v l F' P 1 A r 'NK L ' 1 7' . - 1 -5 ' 5- L A N ,Lb -he ' nl .
