GREEN WAVE YEARBOOK 1987 Long Branch HighSchaal ____ 391 Westwood Avenue Long Branch, New Jersey 07740 Volume XLVIII Editor-in-Chief: Joy Pigage Editor-in-Training: Kerry Ravitch Layout Design Editor: Barbara Musto Sports Editor: Aaron Sorkowitz Co-Copy Editors: Michelle Bott Karen Newman Advisor: Faith F. Radler uL S(K EXPECTATIONS ’87 The Long Branch High School student body is a cross-section of all that is America. Wo arc as diversified as any group can be. Wo represent all races, creeds, nationalities, religions, and socio-economic groups. We all live, w ork, and learn together as a family, ,4s is often the case in a family unit, we have our disagreements. I he mutual resolution of our differences gives us maturity. Maturity gives us hopes, drt'ums, and — expectations. Expectations — the eager anticipation of things to come. We truly do not toko these expectations lightly. As we approach our graduation day, we realize that expectations — to be achieved, must be earned and deserved. W'e do not expect them to he handed to us on the proverbial silver platter. They are goals we are setting for ourselves; ivb must strive to attain them, or they will be forager beyond our grasp. Expectations are what mala s life worth living. Without the dream of a brighter tomorrow there is no need to wake up to the dawn of a new day. } 1 Cl v In this vein, we, the editors of Importations ’87, hope that our yi arhook will ivmmunicate in words and pictures, the expectations we have for to mo i row We have excluded such things us pai fffear. trouble, and sorrow They are a fact of human existence. We have included the expectations that young people hope to achieve and strive for during their lifetime. Expectations that, upon attainment, will give us an inner satisfaction far greater than an accumulation of worldly goods can bring The attainment of these expectations will mean that w e'personally have used our bodies and our minds — not our outstretched hands — to grasp the Imst of all that life can offer. The Class of 19H7 has attained the fulfillment of a goal — graduation. We salute them and leave them with this advice. “Reach for the heaven in eighty-seven. ’’ and you will fulfill all of your EXPECTATIONS! If the marriage did not succeed a divorce decree was ready and waiting. There was a “Wheel of Fortune” run by Coach Odom, and a Pie toss, both were very popular. The season began with a very emotional and impressive victory over St. John Vianney. St. John, coached by former Green Wave assistant coach Garry Penta, ended up on the short end of a 30-6 game. Long Branch played extremely well both on offense and defense. The Branchers gave the fans an idea of what was to come in 1986. The second game of the season came quickly as Long Branch traveled to Ocean Township on a Thursday evening. Although still early in the season, the importance of this game was evident to the capacity crowd. The Ocean game had become an intense rivalry. Going into the game the Big Red was ranked very high in the Shore and in the State. This game would be a great challenge for Long Branch. Long Branch scored on its irst possession or a 6-0 lead. Ocean came right back to score, and it was 6-6 at half-time. The Green Wave took control of the game at the beginning of the second half. Troy Brabham raced 85 yards with the second half kickoff to put Long Branch out in front for good. The final score was 20-12 and Long Branch was now 2 and 0. The third game of the season was against highly-regarded Freehold Township. Freehold had very good size and a strong running game. Freehold also was a new team on the Long Branch Schedule. This game seemed to be an indication of what the season would be like. The Green Wave, led by an awesome running attack and a stingy defense, thoroughly cleared in the fourth quarter with a score of 28-0. The Patriots did score at the end of the game, but the final score was 28-6. Long Branch was now 3-0 and starting to be recognized as a major force in the shore area. Next on the schedule was always tough Monmouth Regional. The Golden Falcons came to Bresett Stadium with upset on their mind. The first half of the game was all Long Branch as the Green Wave jumped out to a 23-0 lead. Almost everyone at the game thought that it was all over at that point. Everyone except Monmouth Regional, that is. The Golden Falcons scored two third quarter touchdowns to make the score 23-16. They took control of the momentum of the game. Long Branch now had their backs to the wall, but showed the tremendous character and discipline which It has been called a “dream season” but those who watched it happen, know that it’s or real. The 1986 Long Branch High School Football Team finished the season as the winningest Football Team in the history of the school. They finished with a perfect 11 wins and no losses; Central Jersey Group III State Champions; Shore Con erence Champions; Monmouth County Champions; and, ranked the signs that the team might be suc-cess ul. But, not even the experts could have predicted just how suc-cess uJ! Most o them had predicated that this Long Branch Team would inish third or ourth in number two team in the state. It all started on a hot summer evening in August and ended with a festive fire truck ride in cool December. About 70 candidates reported to Coach Levy and his staff for pre-season drills. The group was spirited together and ready to work. The team began to take shape as they went through double session practices and into the pre-season scrimages. The scrimmages against Manalapan, Southern, and Rumson showed would eventually carry them through the greatest of seasons. The Wave took control of the game in the fourth quarter and went on to win 33-16. Week number 5, matched the 4-0 Green Wave against the 3-1 Huskies o Matawan. Matawan had been mentioned as the pre-season avorite to win the “B” North Conference. The first half of the game was a very hard hitting defense struggle with neither team scoring a touchdown. The only scoring in the first half were two field goals by Long Branch’s sophomore kicker V.J. Muscillo. His second field goal being a school record 52-yarder. The score at the half was Long Branch 6, Matawan 0. The opening kickoff in the second half set the tone for the rest of the game as Long Branch’s Lonnie Rawls took the kick and raced untouched for a touchdown. From that point on, it was the Green Wave offense and defense which dominated play. The final score was Long Branch 26, Matawan 0. Another pre-season favorite was next on the schedule. The Caseys of Red Bank had speed, size, and the makings of a great team. Once again the first half of this game was a real defense struggle. The only points scored was a field goal by Long Branch. Although the score was just 3-0 at half-time the Green Wave looked confident. This confidence took command of the game in the second half. Long Branch moved the ball on offense and continued to play stingy defense. By the time the final whistle blew, Long Branch had their second consecutive 26-0 victory! Long Branch was now 6-0 and heading to Raritan for a game against the 1-5 Rockets. You wouldn’t think that this game would draw much attention, but this was for the conference championship. The Long Branch stands were packed and the Green Wave Football Team rewarded their loyal fans with a 41-7 crushing defeat of Raritan. This wasn’t just their seventh win; it gave the team their first outright conference championship in 25 years!. The next opponent for Long Branch was long-time rival, and ”B” South Co-Champion, Asbury Park, Asbury had one of the top-rated defenses in the shore. The Long Branch offense didn’t seem to care. Led by the running of Malcolm Freeman and Ray Ramos and the passing of Wayne Calderon, the Green Wave scored 31 points. The defense led by Co-Captain Tom George and jay Beale also played one of their finest games and shut down the Asbury offense. The final score was 31-6!. This Long Branch Team walked off the field with an 8-0 record and heading to the State Playoffs. After being named the top team in Central Jersey Group III, Long Branch received the home field advantage for the playoffs. Long Branch’s opponent for the semifinal game was Princeton High School. Princeton came to Long Branch with a 7-1 record and the hopes of a State Championship. These hopes and dreams were erased quickly as the Green Wave scored 28 first quarter points enroute to a 45-0 victory. Long Branch totally dominated Princeton in every area of the game. Offense, defense, kicking — Princeton was just no match for the B” North Champion. For Long Branch, 58 players dressed for the game, and 58 players played in the game. The Branchers were now 9-0 and going to the State Finals. While almost everyone was thinking about the December 6th State Final game, the Football Team knew that they had a Thanksgiving Day game. The traditional Turkey Day game against Red Bank Regional would not be as easy as most people expected. Although the Bucs were only people expected. Although the Bucs were only 1-7-1 they had some talented players and because of the rivalry this was sure (Continued Page 92) Question: What is your most memorable moment of the 1986 football season? After the game, the Long Branch players were tired and sore. Something special had to happen this Thanksgiving!. The 1986 Long Branch High School Football Team was now 10-0 and the winningest Football Team in the history of this fine school! The next and final game for Long Branch was the Central Jersey Group III championship game. This game to be held at Long Branch's Bresett Stadium against arch-rival Ocean Township was certain to be played before an enthusiastic and overflow crowd. The spirit and excitement of this big game were evident in both teams, and, in the communities as well. Thursday night, before the game, the team got together for a meal at a local restaurant and were surprised to find about six fire trucks with their horns blasting, wishing them good luck. On Friday, the schools student council arranged one of the best pep-rallies in recent history in the school's gymnasium. The team was ready! Saturday the crowd began arriving early as everyone wanted a good seat for the game of the year. At 1:00 p.m. the two teams lined up for the opening kickoff and began their quest for a State Championship. The first half proved to be another hard-hitting defensive struggle with both teams playing well. The score at the intermission was Long Branch 3 and Ocean O. It was still anyone’s ball game. Long Branch took control of the game in the second half. Led by Anthony Pierce’s touchdown in the third quarter, and Malcolm Freeman’s three scores in the final quarter, the Green Wave went on to defeat the Big Bed by a scored of 30-0. As the clocked ticked off the final seconds, the Long Branch coaches, players, and fans began to celebrate this tremendous victory and season. Everywhere around Bresett Stadium was cheering, hugging. and even some tears. The 1986 version of Long Branch Football was now 11-0 and STATE CHAMPIONS! After the game the celebration continued. There was a parade around town on the fire trucks and a reception in the High School cafeteria. The dream had come to life! It was a season which will not be forgotten by coaches: Levy, Biasi, Balina, Baciopp and Valerio; those members of the championship class of 1987; Co-captains fay Beale and Tommy George; and graduating seniors Spencer Carpenter, Shawn Chronic, Jerome Dingle, Malcolm Freeman, Shannon McCleave, Chris Otis, Hunter Pashkow, Anthony Pierce, Marc Puryear, Dave Beevey, and Dino Stampoulis. Ch rU«i«ra S3 The Big Green Marching Machine Makes Music at Games The Big Green Marching Machine” made sixteen performances during their busy 1986 Fall Season. They were seen at eleven football game half-time or pre-game shows, two parades, and three pep rallies. This unit is made of six components — musicians, flag twirlers, colorguard, display flags, majorettes, and cheerleaders. Practice starts early for these talented, ambitious, and busy students. Marching fundamentals are taught to new marchers during the month of July and the entire unit comes together in late August to begin putting together the first half of the show. During the two week clinic marching drills are learned, then music is added and twirling routines developed. The final product is the result of countless hours of work done separately ... If you answer, someone who leads the cheers for the team during games, you will only be half right. Actually a cheerleader is a hard-working, female student who spends several hours a day practicing routines and memorizing the words to cheers. And — that’s just to earn a place on the squad. To become an LBHS cheerleader you do not volunteer. You are selected by a demanding panel of judges, who among other things grade you on voice, poise, personality and the ability to do a perfect split. Looks easy? Try it! After earning the right to wear the distinctive green and white uniform, and the cute pom-poms, the hard work begins. Captains are elected, songs are selected, routines are figured out, and words are memorized. Hours are spent until “practice makes perfect and the advisors. Michaeline Odom. JV, and Ernestine Whitehead, varsity, are satisfied that each girl is doing her best. The cheerleaders find it all worthwhile. They get to travel to all the games and see all the action. They help to create the excitement. Last, but not least, they prove to everyone that behind every good athlete is a loud, energetic young woman cheering him on to victory. Throughout life we will encounter two types of people: the self-motivated and those who need a little push. I have met both types during my three years as your class advisor. To those of you who need no such push. I wish for you. all you strive to achieve. For those of you who need a little motivation, keep your eye on those who don’t. This has truly been an enjoyable and rewarding experience for me. I will certainly remember my hardworking officers and those of you with whom I had the pleasure of sharing the past three years. Love and best wishes to all of my Seniors! On behalf of the entire staff of Expectations '87, the editors extend their grateful appreciation to the following: The members of the Long Branch Board of Education and the Office of the Superintendent for allowing us to work with the best professional yearbook publishers and photographers in the business. We also appreciate their co-operation during photo sessions. Mr. Jeffrey Graber, district communications officer, who served as our liaison with six West End Court and gave our accomplishments excellent coverage in the press. We wish him well in his new position in Trenton. Mr. Andrew Haynes, LBHS principal, and Miss Florence Vogel, English Department SAC, who have allowed us to “work on our own. As stated in the Asbury Park Press, Sunday, March 8. 1987, They support us as much as possible by working with us instead of trying to fit us into a mold. They go out of their way for us. We can always go to either one of them for support.” Our friendly corridor aides: Mrs. Odessa Daugler, Mrs. Pattie Bates, Mrs. Shirley Clough, Mrs. Janet Alexionex, and Mrs. Ann DeFaria who understand that we cannot always walk in the halls” or follow the rules, all of the time. The staff of our “regional office” Mrs. Dorothy Schroeder, Mrs. Dottie DeFazio and Mrs. Pat Martin who give their all so that our “office” can function well. It’s always service with a smile.” Mr. Lawrence Dirienzo and Mrs. Sylvia Brown, class administrator and class advisor who encourage and assisted us in creating a great book for their class. Mrs. Tracy Linsin, computer person, who seems to have our endless lists ready before we request them, making our work easier and more accurate. Mr. Murray Howard, our representative and friend from Taylor Publishing Company, whose suggestions and visits are always welcome. His constructive criticism and timely advice definitely help to make our book the award-winner that it is. To the entire crew at Linz Studios, our official school photographers, are to be commended for the skillful and professional manner in which they handled our photographic needs. Through the untiring efforts of Sheldon Linz, Harry, Jeff, Sharon, Joyce, and Mary Jane our deadlines were met and our pictures, especially senior portraits, were excellent. Thanks for Mr. Lou Rallo, Mr. Sudershan Sharma, Mr. Vic Cic-conetti, Mrs. Virginia Richmond, Mr. David Billings, Mrs. Michaelin Odom, Coaches Odom and Levy. Mrs. Pat Irvine and all other faculty members who assisted us in any way. We appreciate your co-operation. And last, but far from least, our Auntie Faith. Always full of energy and ideas, her enthusiasm, support and love guided us through the most difficult of times. We are all extremely grateful that she has the facility to love her work, her family, and all of us as much as we love her. It was a rough year, but we did it! ADVISOR’S MESSAGE What we anticipate seldom occurs; what ire least expected generally happens. — Disraeli In spite of extensive research, I cannot find any indication that the brilliant Disraeli was ever a yearbook advisor. However, after six years in this role, I can honestly say that this word “fit the part. The yearbook this year was no exception — its day-to-day production fully exceeded all of our “Expectations. Oh wad some power the giftie gie us To see ourselves as others see us. — Robert Burns To her family — she is a beautiful, bright, warm, dutiful, and loving daughter and sister. To her many friends — she is loyal, giving, and true. To her soccer coaches — she is smart, swift, and tough.” To her yearbook advisor — she is dedicated, forceful, decisive, personable, diplomatic, responsible, and mature. To herself — she is simly Joy Pigage. a high school senior who just happens to be the yearbook editor-in-chief. Joy entered the world of yearbook” as a freshman and came up through the ranks. She learned by watching and volunteering for all phases of production. In her junior year, joy was unable to fit the yearbook course into her academic schedule. This did not deter her; she worked independently during a study hall, after school, and, at home. Illness forced our 1986 editor to step aside for long periods of time — Joy stepped in to fill the gap. In essence she was truly co-editor of the book. |oy, in keeping with her manner, refused this role and did the work without the glory. As we all know the book received a first place award in national competition. Joy carried her expertise into this year's book. For the wonderful job Joy has done for the past two, I am eternally grateful for the wonderful relationship we had. It was unique. Jennifer Pigage, her freshman sister, said it all one day as she watched us working on a deadline, “Joy, she’s not your mom! She's your friend. Speaking of moms and dads and grandmothers — I also want to publicly thank Carolyn and George Pigage, Jennifer, and Julie, and Grandma Lee Rockhill for their support. Mrs. Rockhill made calls to insure us a profitable ad section. Thank you all! Aaron Sorkowitz served as our sports editor in 1986 and 1987. He is responsible for the innovative “movie film” strip layouts which have won us praise. To describe Aaron, I would use the word “laid back. However, he hit every deadline and gave us his all. Thank you and good luck in the future. Every word in a yearbook has to be written by someone. This year we were fortunate to have Michelle Bott and Karen Newman on our staff. These girls had never worked on a yearbook before and soon they found themselves copy editors. We appreciate all that they did to help. Also, Michelle filled in as staff photographer and saved us several times. Best wishes to two great girls. The money end of the book was ably handled by Nicole Rutledge. She took her time learning about high finance, but once she mastered the art of deposit slips there was no stopping her. She was assisted by Kisha Mayo, Victoria Law, and Tonia Rich. Our extensive advertising section is the result of their efforts. Good luck kids! Barbara Musto is truly a dedicated yearbook person. Her favorite words were, “Let me do it” and she did. Thank you Barb for the layouts and all the other work you put into this book. It is appreciated. Charity Dusko, Mimi Farginere, Dino Stampoulis, Wayne Calderon, Regina Bailey. Jackie Coyne, Holly Tripp. Terry Formato, and Sherry Fitzgerald helped us with the million and one little jobs that have to be done. They never complained and were always there. We look forward to having the underclassmen back next year and we wish the seniors luck and success in all their endeavors. Sophomores do not usually hold responsible positions on a yearbook staff, but we could not have survived without our triplets — Gloria Stamato and Kim Faranda were an excellent asset to our staff and did their tasks with dedication and ability. We look forward to having them around for two more years. Kerry Ravitch did an excellent job. She truly had her baptism under fire and will make a terrific editor of the 1988 yearbook. This will be the first time I have ever had a yearbook in published by three juniors. The results should be fantastic. I look forward to their enthusiasm, dedication and love next year. Rest up girls — the best is yet to come! I thank all of the parents, faculty and staff members who helped to make this book a success. Without your help and understanding of the problems we often encounter, it could not be done. To Mr. Haynes and Miss Vogel a great big. personal thanks. You're the best bosses a teacher could ever have. Lastly, a grateful thanks to my family. I know I am not the easiest person to live with outside of yearbook “season, but in “season” — wow! Thanks for your kindness, understanding, and love. Sincerely, Faith Feld Radler Advisor's Mnugr 2SS end of thl mool yea d nnr rlic As we reach back upon our aci expectations were reached our goals were attained, but many new goals and expectations await us. Graduation is not an ending — it is a beginning. It is the is only natural to look _______________tintments. For many, SKSuUon was 'Twhieved! Many of time to use our education to attain these future expectations.
