Bradford -. ' as We, the Class of 1959, offer the Green Wave as a token of our earnest appreciation and high esteem for our former principal, R, Preston Shoemaker, Jr. During his twenty-one years at Long Branch High, Mr. Shoemaker witnessed its growth from a small, crowded building of twenty-seven rooms to the more spacious structure of sixty rooms needed to accommodate the student body which more than doubled in size between 1937 and 19583 the growth which increased his responsi- bilities and made even more difficult his role of ad- Dedication ministrator. He accepted and met the challenge present- ed by expansion. Although he has retired as Principal ofLongl3ranch High School, Mr. Shoemaker will continue to be active in the field of education for he has been selected as the Assistant Director of Admissions on the Madison campus of Fairleigh Dickenson University. We take this op- portunity to thank him for his contribution to l.,l3,H,S, and to wish him the best of luck and equal success in his new position. si vw B .5 it YM- R A 'T ry. X , v . Other highlights of the club's activities include: its participation in the Rutgers University Foreign Language Day Program in April, a Spanish Banquet in the spring, where all the food is authentically prepared by the members, and a trip to one of the Spanish museums in New lllllll CLUB - lIUBIlES A new addition to the program Of extra-curricular activities is the Latin Club, Nobiles, Under Mrs. Sylvia Colby's supervision, the Latin Club in just two years has proved itself to be a very definite attribute to the school. For its regular schedule, a varied and interesting program is planned for every meeting, To illustrate early Roman culture, the club presents an annual Ro- man Banquet, complete with costumes, food and customs, just as it was during Caesar's reign fwith a little imaginationp. The result was that the Wave had to settle for fourth place in the loop. Larry Belin boosted his average to l79,l to take sec- ond place in the Northern Division averages. Bob Brown took sixth with a l70,l5, while Stan Andrus hit a 170.0 to take eighth place, Belin also captured high series with a 600 and hit a 246 for third high of the league, At the time, his game represented an all-time league record. His series still stands as an all-time Conference mark, Among the other achievements of the year were two wins over Red Bank, despite the fact that the Bucs had the high team average in the league, and three wins over Atlantic Highlands, to knock the Tigers out of first division, Last year, too late for the 1958 Green Wave, the bowling squad took the state title at Montclair. The Wave, led by Brown, Belin, and Gary Garolfalo, came from far behind to belt out games of 922 and 925 and win the title with a three-game set of 2657, BHSEBHLL 1959 The 1959 Long Branch baseball season saw the team have a 5-4-1 record up to the time of publi- cation. In the early part of the season there was sound pitching by Dave Jones, Vincent Muscillo, and Charles Waterman but poor support and feeble hit- ting by the remainder of the squad, After a mid-season 15-1 victory over Asbury Park, the support and hitting seem to jell with the pitching, for the team has won the last three out of four games. Dave Jones and Vincent Muscillo respectxvly lead the batters with 333 and 323 battingaverages Vincent Muscillo and George Fornln with 10 and 9 hits respectively have collected the most hits Bob Thorne is the big RBlman with 10 RBI s followed by Jimmy Newman with six Long Branch 0 6 3 1 3 O 15 0 6 Schedule Red Bank Neptune South River Manasquan Middletown Red Bank Asbury Park Princeton Freehold South River Manasquan Asbury Park Middletown Hamilton Freehold Neptune Opponents 4 3 5 0 3 f9 innsj 7 1 1 O JV coach Red Pierson 2 gy Pitcher Outfielders Vlnny MUSCIIIO Dave Jones Coach John Kahle a-mf' . The Wave took second in the Monmouth-Ocean County meet, after being picked for a dismal sixth, In the Shore Conference meet, Long Branch again surprised with a third, one point out of second, Among the winners in the big meets was, of course, Frank Mazza. Mazza set shot put and discus records in every place he threw them, He did not lose a point all year, taking the fullfive every time. Very simple, March 16 was the day on which William H. Meskill as- sumed his responsibilities as our new principal and was formally introduced to the student body at an assembly 1.4,- 1 at 4- . it Q, X ,.,s ! Y . me X B KN.. 5 45' .5 X A 4 .'! V X Y its-l 1 .5 C' .ng .l program. And Assemblies are always on Thursdays, the seating chart is planned that way, So, logically, Monday became Thursday, - T Mr, Meskill must have observed with mixed emotions the large numbers of Branchers rushing to Monday's classes and exclaiming with frantic glances at the clock, Oh, my gosh, it's Thursdayl' But our principal, who holds both A,B, and M,A, from Montclair State Teachers College and did graduate work at Columbia University, appeared unperturbed, and even attended a few classes with us. Mr, Meskill was selected for the position vacated by R. Preston Shoemaker, Jr. from among 30 other appli- cants, His interesting and varied background in adminis- trative education includes several posts in the Fair Lawn, N.J, school system, Just prior to his appointment here, he was Director of the Adult Education Program of the Lago Oil and Transport Company, a subsidiary ofthe Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. While he was affiliated with Lago, Mr. Meskill resided on the island of Aruba, where he served as'an educational adviser to the Aruban government. We of the Class of 1959, would like to extend our best wishes to Mr, Meskill for a successful and happy career as principal of our alma mater. Miss Lucy Chamberlain has served as one of the advisors for our class of 1959, in addition to supervising Le Cercle Francais, After years of devoted service to our school, she is leaving, We would like to thank her on behalf of all of those students for whom she has made the French language live.
