We vainly wrestle with the blind belief that aught we cherish Can ever quite pass out of utter grief and wholly perish. -Robert Frost Some will remember Rebecca Lightstone as a student at Long Beach High, others will remember her as a teacher, but all will remember her as a vibrant young woman with a wonderful smile. In twenty four years, Miss Lightstone found something that many clo not find in three times twen- ty four-she discovered the vital force that is life, and she lived it with hope and enthusiasm, and left it with courage and strength. lt is in- conceivable that one so intense and alive could ever wholly perish from the world in which she lived, or the hearts of those who knew her. lt is to the living memory of Rebecca Lightstone that we dedicate ECHO 1965. To achieve the ultimate goals, Long Beach High School also needs a backbone of strength and leadership. Because of the sincere interest and meaningful assistance that our Administration has offered, each in- dividual in the senior class has been given the opportunity to grow to the fullest of his rsrtr t 'E My dear Graduates, It gives me distinct pleasure to extend congratulations and best wishes to the graduating class of 1965. Each class, like each in- dividual, is unique. Lasting impressions are garnered in high school by each student and will last a lifetime. As graduates you have individually and collectively established creditable records of participation and scholarship in a broad spectrum of endeavor. As students you approach life's great school knowing these experiences will fortify and comfort you. The future promises to be a challenge. At the same time pros- pects are most encouraging. I am certain that the new life faced by each of you as graduates will be rewarding and pleasant. Most sincerely Earl F. Soper, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Earl F. Soper, capacities. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Kuhn, Associate Superintendent of Schools w!5f5? f 7 Wsjgfyry Principal Dear Graduates, The great American thinker, Ralph Waldo Emerson, described the scholar as that man who must take up unto himself all the ability of the time, all the contributions of the past, all the hopes of the future. The secrets of wisdom through the ages have been passed on by way of the printed word. The members of the Class of '65 have long since forgotten their first amazed reactions in piecing to- gether letters to form words, and words to form concepts. Your year- book theme most appropriately highlights the letters of the alphabet, the keys to the wisdom of the world. You are ready now to use them wisely and well forthe benefit of a waiting world. Our sense of time and distance will have altered to the point that our nation will be our neighborhood and our world will be our community. The young men and women of tomorrow will be literate, multilingual, world-travelled and will be reluctant to remain on this planet but will demand the opportunity to seek their future elsewhere in space . . . the nation will face a severe manpower shortage of intelligent and techni- cally prepared personnel. y To the youth of today, I say get all the higher education you can abr sorb. You will need all that and more too, to compete in tomorrow's world. The letters are mixed, to form different words which perform a service. The service is communication. But we aren't able to take advantage of this service unless we are able to com- prehend the meaning of the words involved. Two basic courses are offered at Long Beach which im- prove our reading skills. Speedreading concentrates on improving the vocabulary of the student and helping him to organize the ideas which enter his ff , . f Z prehension skills. The student is taught to retain Vf mind. The industrious scholars look up, shocked! Horrifled, he realizes that he has broken the studi- ous silence, and in mortal shame, shrinkingly slinks away. Seriously though, our excellent librarians maintain a relaxed atmosphere that is conducive to studying. Ethciently ancl helptully, they have prepared stu- dents for individual, independent research by ac- quainting them with library resources. They have also encouraged and stimulated students to develop a search tor knowledge through the all-encompass-- ing media ot books. A H466 E'ae,,n f F V' A 0 , SENIOR PLAY The Senior Play, The Mouse That Roared, presented in February, was a satire on American foreign policy and the Cold War. A tiny country, led by its young duchess and a simple woodsman, accidentally con- quers the world by capturing the lethal Q bomb from the United States. ln the words of the director, Mr. Burton Wolslcy, This was, I feel, one ot the finest presentations I have been involved with in all my years at Long Beach High. The main characters in this hilarious comedy hit were: Robert Nierman, Dan Aronzon, Davida Sing- erman, Jeff Weinberg, Jon Gold, Don Silverman, Ronald Gertz, Jon Kramer, Arlene Ross, Howie Goldstein, and Nancy Miller. The stage managers were Roberta London and Ellen Spier. A ,, 4, at V A , . lluff ' 75 ' io. Q: i A ta 0 Q 78 Qgl 79 TERRY ABRAMS Wrestling, Track, Cross Country, Men's Choir. Students who take advantage of this oppor- tunity are able to supplement their academic education with train- ing in the technical and commercial Helds. Approximately thirty Long Beach students have availed themselves ot such courses as data processing, mechanical engineering, and beauty culture. Our vocational program provides the high school student with practical background and knowledge that he can apply immediately atter graduation and in later lite. S is also jbr AUDIQ-V1 UAL Small details keep our school func- tioning, One of these small details, but a vital one, is performed by the Audio-visual squad. Whenever a play requires special sight or sound aids, the crews of the Audio-visual squad are called upon. In addition, the squad helps to in- t crease the knowledge and aware- ness of students through the many Hlms they show in the classroom. 129 i slit VQCATIO LT-4 W 07' is Q fp fm 52 4 gisfgqii P-4 Sldgq Gr W fy W Zx .UM RIP 9 9 Q .
