This was also a year of many other records. It was the second best season in the school’s history. This year they fought their way to eight wins, one tie, and only one loss, ending the season only 19 points behind the scoring record set by the Jr. Rosebowl Champs of 1950. George Van Zant, Benny Aoki, and George Timberlake set a few records of their own. George Van Zant brought his season total of yards gained up to 1286. This classed him as one of the best fullbacks in J. C. circles. Another great record is claimed by Benny Aoki, speedy 152-pound halfback, who scored a grand total of 100 points to break the great Dewey Tompkins’ record of 14 touchdowns in one season. This record was also tied by George Van Zant. Benny’s golden toe accounted for 28 points after touchdowns. The Vikings had quite a season this year, making a trip to Hutchinson, Kansas, and coming back with a 31-7 victory to make up for the 10-0 loss suffered at the hands of an outstanding Alumni squad. Following their trip east they proceeded to mow all op- ponents, such as San Mateo 34-7, Santa Ana 41-7 and San Diego 54-20, winning each game by four touchdowns or more. Then came a journey to Bakersfield and a thrilling 32-28 win over the Renegades. Then on October 27, the Vikings suffered a very hard loss to Pasadena Bulldogs, 13-7. Then a sweeping victory over El Camino 40-7 and the Vikings started to roll again. The Harbor J. C. team seemed to catch some of the spirit though and battled the Norsemen to a 14-14 tie. The Vikes ended up the season with a 14-12 victory over East Los Angeles J. C. and a 32-7 win over Santa Monica J. C. This year’s Viking track team was still in the early stages of the season when Saga went to press, but it looked as though they were going to go a long way towards the Metro Conference Championship. They were only one step behind L.A. Valley, who were in first spot. Darrel Piercy was elected team captain and leading the team with him were Tom Ferreira, Meredith Gibbons, Frank Stoddard and Ralph Gentry. Outstanding in the field events were Stu Farber, Marv Gelder, and Joe Muldowney in the shot-put and discus, Dick Rogers in the broad-jump, John Coleman in the high jump, and Frank Graves in the pole-vault. Mel Patton, coach, has been here at City College for his third year now. Defending Champions of the Metropolitan Conference, the Long Beach City College baseball team goes into the final round of conference play to defend their title. The Vikings, coached by Joe T. Hicks, have shown their power in earlier games by downing Santa Monica 25-2 and knocking off Harbor JC 26-1. The diamondmen presently rest in fourth place with a rec- ord of three wins, one tie and one loss. The Norse lost to the Alumni 8-3 to start off the 1952 campaign. They then won the next four games before UCLA downed them 6-0. Rainy weather set in after the UCLA game and four of the next six games were rained out. The annual contest be- tween LBCC and the Camp Pendleton Marines fell victim to the rain. Another service team from Terminal Island handed the Vikes their next loss, downing them 9-0. With only seven games under their belt the Vikes started Conference play meeting a strong El Camino nine in the first tussle. The Norse came from behind to tie the score at 4-4 in the ninth inning. The game was called because of dark- ness before either team could break the deadlock. Santa Monica fell prey to the hitting power of the Long Beach squad the next day as the Vikes rolled up the astound- ing score of 25-2. LA Valley handed the Norse their first loss in conference play, rolling to an easy 5-1 victory. In a practice tilt with Terminal Island the Norse walked away with the game, beat- ing the Islanders 12-2. In a story-book finish, the Vikings scored eight runs in the last two innings and pushed across the winning run in the last of the ninth with two outs to eke out their second loop win by downing Fast Los Angeles 11-10. Los Angeles Harbor fell before the Vikings, 26-1, to mark the largest score in the Metro Conference this season. In their last five games Joe Hicks’ nine have scored 75 runs, showing the rest of the teams in the loop the potential strength of the Long Beach squad. Bob Howard, captain of the squad, Ron Downing and Bob Decker led the Vikings in the batting department. Howard and Decker are lettermen from last year’s championship team. Starting his third year as head baseball coach at Long Beach City College, Joe Hicks has already notched two cham- pionships and is striving for a third. Joe is a Southern Cali- fornia product although he has attended both North Dakota State and Iowa State. He attended high school in Wilmington, and went on to Compton Junior College. He graduated from UCLA. By Frep Downinc. Returning from last year’s championship team, Bob Howard, this year’s captain, hoids down the starting position at third base for Joe Hicks’ nine.
