WESTPAC '86 was filled with many firsts, some significant challenges, and a lot of successes for the Grey Lady and her crew. USS LONG BEACH was an integral part of the first Battleship Battle Group fBattle Group Romeoj, fired the first Tomahawk cruise missile outside of a specified test range, and sailed farther north into the Sea of Okhotsk CThe Bear's Lairj than any US warship in recent times. Be- sides these history making events, she participated in several major fleet exercises, including Battle Group ASW Readiness Evaluation, FLEETEX '86, and Cobra Gold '86, The crew of the Grey Lady distinguished them- selves individually as well. They proved to be excel- lent Ambassadors in foreign ports, not only partak- ing of the festivities, but also bringing joy into the lives of many needy children through Operation I-landclasp. Each Hardclasp vounteer gave up some of his liberty to spend time with orphaned or disad- vantaged children. This book attempts to tell the story of this histor- ic deployment and of a ship which I have been proud to Command. Marvin J. Weniger Captain U.S.N. Commanding Officer th V
