Q Y I 0 1 if ab? N l USS LUNG BEACH CGN-9 'WESTPAC 1986 MAY 14 - QCTQBER 24 THE SHIP Y 4 . The USS LONG BEACH QCGN-91 was the first nuclear powered cruiser and first large combatant in the U.S. Navy with a main armament of ex- clusively guided missiles. Built in the Fore River Shipyard at Quincy, Mass., the ship's keel was laid on Dec. 2, 1957, and was launched on July 14, 1959 with Mrs. Craig Hos- mer of Long Beach, Calif. as sponser. LONG BEACH got underway on nuclear power for the first time on the morning of July 5, 196 1. On Sept. 9, 1961, the ship was commissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard with the Honorable John B. Connally, Sec- retary of the Navy, keynoting the ceremonies in which LONG BEACH, with Captain E.P. Wilkinson as com- manding officer, joined the fleet. The LONG BEACH is '721 feet in length with a mast height of 220 feet from the keel to the top of the mast. The ship's standard displacements is 15,200 tons. The LoNG BEACH'S propulsion is steam turbine powered by two nuclear reactors which give the ship unlimited cruising range. The LONG BEACH'S armament consists of the TERRIER missile system, TOMAI-IAWK missile . sys- tem, HARPOON missile system, PHALAN X close-in weapons system, Anti-submarine rocket CASROCJ, and the 5 inch 38 caliber gun mounts. Some interesting facts about the LONG BEACH are: there is about 300 miles of electrical cable used on- board, 14,500 square feet of blue- prints were used in the ships con- struction Cenough to cover 825 foot- ball fieldsjg the LONG BEACH con- tains nearly 10,000 tons of structural steel and steel plates Cequal to the amount of steel con- tained in the frame of a 40 story buildingjg nearly 3,500 meals are prepared daily when the ship is at sea, and there are over 800 telephone extensions on board the ship. 0 The present USS LONG BEACH is a veteran of 11 Western Pacific tours Cincluding this West Pac 865, one Mediterranean Cruise, and the famous Nuclear Task Group Around the World Cruise of 1964. THE SEAL The ship's seal is representative' of the LONG BEACH'S mission, summarizing it in the motto Strike Hard, Strike Home . The capability of the LONG BEACH to Strike Hard, Strike Home is her missile systems, sybolized in the seal by the triple tri- dents. The missile systems are designed to operate of- fensively against land, air, and surface or submarine threats, making the LONG BEACH an effective tactical weapon. To combine this striking power with the advan- tage of nuclear power for propulsion is to further in- crease her effectiveness by allowing virtually unlimit- ed cruising ability. Nuclear power is represented in the seal by the sun. The anchor-carrying eagle stands for the sea pow- er possessed by the LONG BEACH, one ofthe most pow- erful ships in the surface fleet. The final symbol, the sea shell, is taken from the seal of the city of Long Beach, California, the ship's namesake, and it symbolizes all the qualitiesof adven- ture inherent in a sailor's life. The Navy's mission of strength, combined with nuclear propulsion and the most advanced missile systems is exactly what the Uss LONG BEACH represents. WESTPAC '86 was filled with many firsts, some significant challenges, and a lot of successes for the Grey Lady and her crew. USS LONG BEACH was an integral part of the first Battleship Battle Group fBattle Group Romeoj, fired the first Tomahawk cruise missile outside of a specified test range, and sailed farther north into the Sea of Okhotsk CThe Bear's Lairj than any US warship in recent times. Be- sides these history making events, she participated in several major fleet exercises, including Battle Group ASW Readiness Evaluation, FLEETEX '86, and Cobra Gold '86, The crew of the Grey Lady distinguished them- selves individually as well. They proved to be excel- lent Ambassadors in foreign ports, not only partak- ing of the festivities, but also bringing joy into the lives of many needy children through Operation I-landclasp. Each Hardclasp vounteer gave up some of his liberty to spend time with orphaned or disad- vantaged children. This book attempts to tell the story of this histor- ic deployment and of a ship which I have been proud to Command. Marvin J. Weniger Captain U.S.N. Many crew members took advantage of the Ferry system and visited Vancouver or re- turned Stateside, others stayed and enjoyed the sites in Victoria. 119 ..,. .......-..Y.--..,.,..-v-,..,.,,,..f-..,. -A----1 ---':v- - ...,,.,-..,... -,...........-,., ,., V Y -.-.fuk Nj.. 1 fl PROJECT H Photo by SM3 Tonack Photo by SM3 Tonack PROJECT HANDCLASP was by far one of the most rewarding experiences enjoyed by many LONG BEACH crew members. Commander Hugh Brogan, the ship's Chaplain, organized PROJECT HANDCLASP in almost all of the overseas ports. The amount of personnel willing to use their own liberty time to help orphaned or under-pri- viledged children was overwhelming. Normally when other ships have a similar projects they drop off the supplies and leave. LONG BEACH sailors brought supplies and participated in repairing and repain- ting many buildings. Their friendliness and caring will be remembered by these children for years to come. 120 .,,. -.....,. ....... , ,..... ,..,,...........-..,.,,.,.. ,.,..-s ,. .,,..,. -U .. ........- .9-.-.,....wgl-Q--A-fx-g-vw-'e,.f F:--1-gfqa-:fi.?,m491.,T3i.f,,7 ,A , ,1.:3:j:i,,,g.. 5, , z1,?,:gff rf :.15,Efe.i5,:T9.g,f,aM,3?::::re6f M -,ziv-1.0 r - - ' ' ,K , Q Y , HA. ,WMM . - , , A. ..,, ,..f,.:-Qgffrfv---,:::?..5-1--'H--f .V VHA, ld V V uw ,igiuafl Qg s Hi , , , M371 ,Wg .Y fwi, .....,-fi.-if --fi-fr-:.-N.:-:: ' W-M fc 'vhm -' f ' H W- A ' L V cw- . ,W Z H-',M,:,t::,,,.,....,.....,..,,,,., ,...n,...........,,..,, .,, '- Yi, Q V 9' ' 122 ,.-. ..,.,..-.. After spending 164 days away from our home port of San Diego, LONG BEACH arrived pierside at pier Juliet NAS North Island on October 24, 1986. On the pier banners and signs were wav- ing and balloons were flying as loved ones waitied anxiously for the arrival of their sail- ors. As soon as the LONG BEACH neared the pier the Navy Band struck up a tune and the crowd started cheering and crying. Refreshments were served on shore for dependents and family members, and many sailors greeted their wives and girlfriends with roses brought to them by the pilot boat. The BEACH was back at last.
