THE 1985 ELM LONE TREE COMMUNITY SCHOOL LONE TREE, IOWA Table of Contents DEDICATION Mr. Douglas Hofmeister Mr. Thomas McAllen This years elm is dedicated to Mr. Hofmeister and Mr. McAllen. Mr. Hofmeister has been with us for six short years. This year he coached the boys basketball and track teams to state championships. His coaching abilities, along with the ability to get the most out of a person as a student and an athlete will be missed greatly. Mr. McAllen will always be remembered as our English teacher, National Honor Society advisor, and drama club advisor. The many books we have read and projects we have done in his class have helped to broaden our horizons widely. His classes will be missed by many students. We wish Mr. Hofmeister and Mr. McAllen both the best of luck in the future. First Row (Left to Right): Todd Krueger, Andy Pechous, Scott Lutz, Tim Lorack; Second Row: Bruce Kout, Scott Heitland. The three seniors on the squad provided key leadership for the young Lone Tree squad. Each match was hard fought as is indicated by the number of 5 game matches the team was involved in. With a good foundation of talent returning the future has limitless bounds. 23 Coach Baumann 24 GIRLS BASKETBALL Front row: Coach Powers, Barb Rout, Dawn Rocca, Tonya Prybil, Teresa Waldschmidt. We had several major injuries before and during the season and our numbers were low. Tonya Prybil was our only senior and will be missed greatly. But several young players gained valuable experience along with the other upper classmen starters. Heather Paul also established a new school record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.86. They celebrated FHA week by having breakfast for the teachers, breakfast for themselves, dressing up, making a bulletinboard for the care center and wearing red and white at the end of the week. Over the holidays, they had a party for the residents of the care center and baked and delivered cookies for the elderly of Lone Tree. Three members, Romona Parizek, Teri Forbes and Dawn Alcock, attended the State Leadership convention in Des Moines. It was FHA’s 40th anniversary celebra- tion. William Alt, Tig Johnson On August 27th, 1984, 6 students and one teacher left for Mexico, unaware of the adventures that were awaiting them. The trip had long lasting effects on Jill Welter, Ramona Parizek, Jeanne Alt, Kelly Dixon, Bonnie Westfall, and Kara Rayner. Their first stop was Mexico City where they resided at the Hotel Fleming. While in Mexico City they visited the Aztec ruins, Reina Aventura, which is like our Disney World, and the Pink Zone. They also saw the Folklovic Ballet at the Palace of Fine Arts. Their next stop was Taxco, where they stayed at the Hotel Agua Escondida, or Hotel of the Hidden Water and passed time by browsing in the many shops. The last stop before returning to Mexico City was Acapulco. They stayed at the beautiful Romano Palace. Time was spent at the pool or beach and shopping. While in Mexico, Bonnie got the worst sunburn and learned how to water ski in Acapulco, Kelly will long remember the wild pillow fight in Acapulco and the bus ride back to Mexico City, Ramona will remember the pleasant walks in the park with the rats and the very interesting people she met, Jeanne learned to parasail and will never forget the episode at the Latin American Tower, Kara will remember the many miles walked looking for pink shoes and the many parties, and Miss Welter returned home with a new stock of Spanish records and still awaits another bus ride through the mountains to Taxco. It was a trip filled with very special times and very special people. 39 Mexico trip pictures found on page 85 NEWSPAPER STAFF (Left to Right) Sandra Flake, Advisor Miss Welter, Teri Forbes, Julie Terhune NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 40 (Left to Right) Advisor Mr. McAllen, Bruce Rout, Tonya Prybil, Kay Stahmer, Jeff Terhune. It was a great way for everyone to get together after the long Christmas break. 52 PROM 1985 “A French Evening in Paradise” was the setting for the Junior-Senior Prom held on Apr. 27 at the American Legion in Lone Tree. The Legion was decorated with maroon and pink streamers, a banner, French flags and an Eiffle Tower built by the Junior Class. The tables were decorated with white tablecloths, red menu cards and memory books and red, long stemmed roses. The dinner was served at 6 p.m. by the sophomore servers. The dinner was planned and prepared by the Junior mothers. It consisted of salad, a main course of Chicken Cordon Bleu with brown rice and mushrooms, French-cut green beans, baked potato and French bread. Chocolate Mousse’ Royale ice cream was served for dessert. This year’s guest speaker was Charles Baumann, who spoke of the future to the seniors and to savor the moment of Prom. After dinner, pictures were taken by Kent Studio of Iowa City. It was a memorable evening for all those that attended the 1985 Prom. The juniors had many money-making projects this year in order to sponsor the prom. These included: concession stands during the varsity basketball games, selling M M’s, selling carnation corsages for Valentine’s Day and sponsoring a St. Valentine’s Day dance. 53 54 Jeanne Alt Richard Applebee Roger Barnes Paul Bevans Danny Bontrager Colene Brenneman Eric Brisaee Steven Burns Richard Burr Kimberley Chabal Kevin Dauber Brian Evans Gary Feldman Sandra Flake Philip Forbes Teri Forbes Cynthia Goody Brett Horrell Cheryl Hotz Jamie Johnson Mark Lenz Bryan Less Sonya Mangold Lisa Marshek Bradley Musser Diana Musser Romona Parizek Kara Rayner Dawn Rocca Timothy Stebral Stacy Swartzendruber Beth Telford Julie Terhune Teresa Waldschmidt Terri Westerhoff Leigh Westfall Dennis Womer 56 57 Dawn Alcock Carmen Brenneman Cynthia Cox Peggy Dixon Gregory DuBoia Jeffrey Evans Allen Goody Rick Grostic Micki Havel Michelle Huff Tig Johnson Garry Kent Barbara Kout Holly Krueger Michelle Krueger Kevin Marshek Derrick McDannald Jodi Menzer SOPHOMORES Donald Morrison Angela Mulcahy Van Musser Shane Nicola Vincent Owen Brett Schaapveld Scott Schumacher Russell Sexton Jeremy Shanklin Scott Stahmer John Swails Lynnel Thomas Pamela Vrchoticky Tina Wollrab Joel Yedlik 58 William Alt Jackie Anderson Dean Dauber Scott Feldman Philip Fisher Steve Flake Glen Forbes Kathy Ford Amy Green Douglas Green Tina Hoermann Daniel Karr Eric Kirkpatrick Douglas Langenberg Christine Less Daniel Lloyd Ronald Lothridge Cindy Musser Michell Owen Heather Paul Matt Rocca Rodney Slaughter Julie Sotzen Roger Swartzendruber Shelly Telford Matthew Trexel Diane Waldschmidt Carol Walker Chris Webb Mark Westerhoff Kelli Westfall 60 61 JP11I Mike Bontrager Cassandra Burns Misty Cunningham Charles Dunning Amy Forbes Ranae Forbes Peggy Fraser Christopher Grostic Lisa Hammer Gary Hot Jeremy Hotz Elizabeth Ipsen Amy Klebe Marnie Rout Jana Lemley Kevin Lenz Randy Mougin Jennifer Mueller Catherine Mulcahy Coleen Schuessler Steven Sedlacek Christopher Sojka Nathan Trexel Tonya Treiber Amy Vinton Judy Walker 64 Bonnie Alt David Beat Lonnie Bontrager Clint Brenneman Karleen Brenneman Tara Buttz Stephanie Dittz Tracy Eden Shelly Eden Greg Feldman 7TH GRADE Kevin Klebe Mat Langenberg Kria Larkin Steve Fiaher Robby Ford Sunny Fraaer Debbie Green Heather Hain Alicia Havel Tammy Hoermann Pat Horrell Mike Kaaper Robby Kaaper 65 AlUa Lemley Jessica Lloyd Kelli Lutz Renee Magruder Shanda Menzer Richard Mougin Missy Murdock Becky Musser Brenda Nicklaus Missy O’Leary 7TH GRADE Hillary Paul Brenda Robertson Tony Schaapveld Angela Sexton Casey Shingledecker Travis Swenson Angie Telford Todd Thomas Nicky Venema Kenneth Vrchoticky JUNIOR HIGH GIRLS BASKETBALL Front Row (Left to Right) Amy Vinton Mgr., Bonnie Alt Mgr., Peggy Fraser.
