The 1984 track season began with a lot of question marks and ended as one of the most successful in school history. The youthful Lions came on to win the Falcon Relays, the Lion Invitational, and the District meet at Anamosa. The district title was the first since 1963, and enabled 10 individuals and nine events to go to the state meet. At the state meet the Lions performed well and gained a lot of experience for next year’s state meet. Phil- ip Forbes placed 6th in the 100 meter Dash and was the Class 1-A Long Jump State Champion. This team was outstanding primarily because of its balance and depth—while there were some outstanding individuals. This team finished so high in the standings so often because so many different individuals were scoring in so many different events. School records were set by Mary Rayner in the discus with a throw of 102’8” and by Lori Yedlik in the shot put with a throw of 33 6”. The most total points scored by individuals on this year’s team was 158 points by Stacy Swartzendruber and 154 points by Holly Krueger.
