The 1983 Volleyball team completed its regular season schedule with a 9-8 match record. In a remarkably well- balanced conference race, the Lionettes finished in a 4 way tie for third in the seven team league. Among the vic- tories were triumphs over state-rated Wapello and a highly regarded IMS squad. Led by All-Conference performers Mary Rayner, Donna Nicklaus, Laurie Yakish, Lora Prybil, Tonya Prybil, and Lynn Godsey, and a superior supporting cast, the first-year coaching staff of Chuck Baumann and Wanda Anderson considered the 1983 cam- paign a successful one. Bolstered by a constantly improving JV squad, an exceptional group of freshman and sophomores, and returning letterwinners Tonya Prybil and Lynn Godsey, the 1984 season looks to be a promising one. The Lions racked up a 2nd consecutive SEI Conference Championship to go along with Sectional, District, and Substate titles which brought a State Tournament berth for the 1st time in 51 years. The most exciting moments this season came in the District and Substate Championship games. In the Dis- trict final, the Lions knocked off favored Keokuk, Cardinal Stritch, 70-62, with probably their best perfor- mance of the season. This win left one more opponent in Lone Tree’s path to the “Big House,” the Calamus Comets. The Lions rallied behind a strong defense and disciplined offense to post a 58-51 victory. Coach Hofmeister felt that the keys to the success of this team were unselfish play, dedication, and goal setting. “As young as we were, we had to be more fundamentally sound than most teams to make up for lack of experience.” However, we could have been the most talented team in the nation and not have had the success or enjoyment we had without unselfish, dedicated, and goal oriented players. The youthful Lions came on to win the Falcon Relays, the Lion Invitational, and the District meet at Anamosa. The district title was the first since 1963, and enabled 10 individuals and nine events to go to the state meet. At the state meet the Lions performed well and gained a lot of experience for next year’s state meet. Phil- ip Forbes placed 6th in the 100 meter Dash and was the Class 1-A Long Jump State Champion. This team was outstanding primarily because of its balance and depth—while there were some outstanding individuals. This team finished so high in the standings so often because so many different individuals were scoring in so many different events. School records were set by Mary Rayner in the discus with a throw of 102’8” and by Lori Yedlik in the shot put with a throw of 33 6”. At this time, the yearly calendar of events was pre- sented to the members for their approval. Some of our activities for the 1983-84 school year were as follows: Sold athletic poster ads, worked at football and basketball concession stands, attended the District Meeting at Benton Community School, gave a party at the Care Center, had a cookie exchange at East Side Village, had a Christmas party for members, went on a Career Trip to Cedar Rapids, attend- ed State Leadership Conference in Des Moines, and partici- pated in FHA HERO Week. Our membership for this year was very small, but we hope the 1984-85 school year will show a large increase in membership!! 33 SPANISH CLUB (L to R) Front row—Adviser Miss Welter, Scott Schumacher, Allen Goody. This year’s Variety Show involved several hours of hard work and planning by the students, as well as Ms. Crawford and Mr. Lodin. The end result was the “Banana Awards,” an hour and a half of singing, playing, laughing, and all out fun. Big name acts such as Horn Hospital, The Little Leaguers, and the Lone Tree Chorus were presented with the Top Banana Award and performed for everyone. Even the Big Banana himself made an appearance to present Ms. Crawford and Mr. Lodin with a big banana and flowers. The audience got their moneys worth in laughs and the students and teachers, though the work was hard, have good times and memories to keep forever. The seniors get together for one last picture after the Variety Show. 47 PROM 1984 Looking good. The meal consisted of: roasted pork loin, baked potatoes, peas and shells, rolls, shrimp cocktail, relish tray, and cherry cheese cake. It was served by the sophomores. Following the meal guest speaker Doug Hofmeister spoke on his memories of his first prom.
