But in this 1982 Elm, time is captive Today we see the present high school days as they are —full of fun and good times —and a little glance into the future which now seems like a distant dream Tomorrow, in the reality of the future, this book will represent memories and times gone by 2 THERE IS A SEASON of Autumn, with its excitement of a new school year, the reuniting of friends, the football games. Homecoming festivities . . . THERE IS THE SEASON of winter with its icy fingers, record snowfalls, and five days of cancelled classes. It is the season of basketball, wrestling, and the Super Bowl THERE IS THE SEASON of spring with its renewal of life. Seniors anxiously await graduation, new members are inducted into clubs, and track teams send competitors to State. The end of the school year is near. THERE IS THE SEASON of summer with its humidity and heat. Softball and baseball provide entertainment. Fourth of July passes. Fall Festival is celebrated. Summer winds down. The approach of a new season is upon us. _______4 Young Lions Capture Winning Season Steve gains extra yardage with the help of his blocker. Defense holds on for a victory over Central Lee. The Lions started the season off with three straight wins and earned an 8th place ranking in the Des Moines Register's Class A Poll. The Lions dropped their next three games and won two of their last three, just coming short of making the play-offs. The Lion attack featured a hard hitting defense coached by Coach Griffin and an explosive shotgun attack which kept Lion fans excited all season. Many post season honors were awarded to the squad which enjoyed a S-4 season. All-conference Honors went to: 1st team—Jim Johnson, Ron Godsey, Tony Krueger. 2nd Team—Tom Lemley, Todd Lorack. Honorable Mention—Dave Rayner, Randy Flotz. Senior Captains were Jim Johnson, Dave Rayner, and Tom Lemley. Honorary Cap- tains were Steve Forbes, Ron Godsey, and Todd Lorack. Volleyball Girls Face Seasonal Highs and Lows Even though the girls had a disappointing record, there were a few bright spots that make this team one of the best that Lone Tree has ever produced. This was evident in sectional play when the Lady Netters came through with convincing back to back victories over Wilton and L-M. Another highlight was the overall SEIC ALL-CONEERENCE MEMBERS: 1st Row: |ill Musser, Beth Pechous, Mi- j4 chele Kout. 2nd Row: Kris Viner, Sheri Burr. enthusiasm of the hometown fans; this crowd support spurred the Lionettes onto many of their victories On the varsity level, the girls netted a 9-10 record along with a few personal victories of their own. Beth Pechous received 1st Team All-Conference honors while Michele Kout and (ill Musser were elected to the 2nd Team Sheri Burr and Kris Viner were designated as Honorable Mention receipients. The team voted Beth Pechous as their Captain, Mi- chele Kout as Most Valuable Player, and Angie Krueger and Trisha Yakish as Most Improved Players for the season Coach Oskroba felt that the team had the abili- ty to be in contention for the Conference Title, but inconsistancy in performance proved otherwise. The Junior Varsity squad also encountered a rough season with a 6-9 record. The girls worked hard and improved steadily throughout the year and gained valu- able playing experience The future outlook of varsity performance was prov- en optimistic by the execution of the Fresh-Soph. They enjoyed a 12-3 record and are looking forward to more winning seasons to come. Spirit week is the traditional en- thusiasm builder for the festivities. The participation was better than ever! The bonfire-pep rally took place under a star-studded sky with ex- citement mounting as the big day approached Friday, October 16, brought sun- shine and warm weather to Lone Tree At 3:00, the sound of the band could be heard on Main Street and the crowd settled down to watch the floats and parade en- tries. The Senior Class won the float division with their theme Tee Pee the Indians. Wapello arrived in town to take the field against the mighty Lions. The game was tied at 14-14 with 1:48 remaining on the clock. It was the Lions' chance to break the bar- rier and come out on top Tony Krueger backed up to pass and launched a beauty to Steve Forbes, who ran it in for six. It was the most exciting game of the season The evening was not yet over as the music could be heard from the Rainbow Connection ballroom. Coach Thie announced the receipients of the King and Queen honors to )im lohnson and Sheri Burr. A perfect day, an exciting game, and a romantic conclusion made Homecoming '81 successful. Victory over the Wapello Indians, 20-14. This parade is so dog-gone exciting. The 1981 Homecoming theme: The Rainbow Connection. The 'Fighting Uons' are on the warpath. My name's Tex Rayner. I'm no dummy: I wrote this sign.'' Hut! 1-2-3 go! Really, I'm not from Wapello! The band performs in the homeroming parade. The Three Stooges: Moe, Larry Curly I and the Band Goes Marching on . . . The Lone Tree Lion Marching Band started their season earlier than most athletic teams when they performed in the American Legion parade in Des Moines, the Fall Festival Parade on Lone Tree, and also at the Adventureland Pa- rade in Altoona, Iowa. All the pa- rades took place during the sum- mer months. The band gave an unusual per- formance on July 12 at Adventureland. Not only did they play such melodies as Hot Stuff and Disco Inferno , they drama- tized the music by succumbing to beat exhaustion. Critics raved about the performance in all the major Iowa newspapers. Despite their mid-summer tradgedy, the band performed pregame and half-time shows for all the home football games and for the first time ever, competed in the IHSMA Marching Band Contest at Wapello, where they received a Division I rating with a total of 69.8 points. This year's Marching Lions to- talled 80 members which included 12 flag girls, 4 rifle girls, 11 percus- sions, and 52 horns They were under the field direction of senior majorette Sheri Burr. The Rifle Corps entertains the half-time football crowd. Headin' for the Hills Steve Forbes, the Widow, gets the eye from Cyrus oug Zaruba). The Autumn Theatrical production, Headin' For The Hills, was held on November 14, 1981. The play featured a family of Hillbil- lies who resided in the community of Lone Mule, Tennessee. A conflict in inheritance benefits drove Cornelia and Dorthea to visit their country rel- atives to settle the contents of the will. According to their father's testi- monial, the girls had to live with their country cousins in order to collect their inheritance. A round of applause goes to Mr. McAllen, the Cast and Stage Crew on a job well done. The young inexperienced matmen squad couldn't muster a victory in their 0-8 dual record but did show promise for a better season next year A unique situation occurred in the Wrestling program's coaching staff. Rick Griffin took over the head coaching responsibilities even though he is not employed as a teacher in the school. He commuted to LT from Iowa City for practice and meets. The matmen were led by senior captains Tom Lemley and Doug Zaruba. A second-place finish by Doug at the Highland Sectional qualified him for the District tournament at Lisbon. Tom's injuries forced him to sit out the first half of the season but fought back to establish a respectable record. A controversial call at the Sectional Tournament ended Tom's hopes of advancing to Districts. The varsity squad was made up of 12 members This lack of depth meant a forfeit of three weights each match. One underclassman highlight was Todd Lorack's second place finish in the conference meet which was held at Louisa-Muscatine. According to Coach Griffin, determination and hard work are the key to a successful '82-'83 season. 24 Doug spars for position. Tom keeps his man down on the mat. The girls were led by seniors Kris Viner, Sheri Burr, and Beth Pechous. It was a rebuilding year for the Lions as they started the season 0-5. Improvement and experience came with each game and the Lions fought to a 7-7 mark during the remainder of the season. The young Lions played a tough schedule where seven of their losses were to teams that won 15 or more games The seniors will be greatly missed for their hard work and never ending contributions to the team. The entire team extends their appreciation to these young men: )im lohnson, Dave Rayner, Todd Comer, and Steve Burr. Cheering Thru the Seasons The Basketball and Wrestling Cheerleaders proved to be very successful as they raised money for new black with gold and white striped sweaters. The girls raised money by selling Lone Tree nylon jackets in black or gold colors. The Booster Club donated enough money to buy ten black gold white pleated shirts. In their impressive uniforms, the girls helped to increase the enthusiasm and spirit at games and pep rallys. Pep rallys included such feats as the caramel onion contest, eating runny jello while blindfolded, and pushing a penny with their nose across the finish line. All the antics were enjoyed by the students. WRESTUNG: (Back) (ill Johnson, Betty Schreiber, Michele DeBrie, Cluele Zacuba. BASKETBALL: (Back) Cindy Nkcum, Kelli Hanks, Sue Oberman. FHA HERO of the Season FHA HERO is an organization whose activities focus on individual growth, preparation for family life, devel- opment of occupational skills and careers and partici- pation of youth in today's society. This year the Lone Tree chapter consisted of 13 high school students. Even though we were small in number, we were not short on enthusiasm. We were involved in many community service projects, such as: Christmas caroling, a Christmas cookie exchange, and a spring party at the Care Center. Our projects were financed by bake sales, conces- sion stands, and selling advertising posters for the athletic schedules. We also participated in many lei- sure activities such as an ice cream social for new members. Mom's potluck, and built a float for the Homecoming parade which won third prize. Finally, the school year would not be complete without our Career trip; the District 10 Meeting, the State Leadership Conference, and our celebration of FHA HERO week. This year instead of holding a Kolache Hop as was done in the past, the members decided to sponsor a ski trip to Sundown, an Iowan ski resort outside of Dubuque. It was a success and hopefully it will become an annual outing. The expense of this trip was paid with funds from the pop machine. Two assemblies are presented each year to the students. Junior High is the loss of one favorite teacher to the gaining of one for every course. Recesses are a thing of the past but noon hours are now available to roam the school or browse the downtown area. Junior High also means the involvement in organized sports and music activities. These activities help them to grow toward a more responsible adulthood plus pre- pare them for the final four years of their education Thus, seventh and eighth grade is truly a season for growth and maturity —the seedlings are beginning to sprout.
