Some students at Lone Tree spend their spare time work- ing rather than participating in extra-curricular activities. The jobs range from making pizzas, pumping gas, hauling feed, waiting on tables, delivering papers, being a photograph- er’s helper or grocery clerk to painting equipment or working at a bank or drugstore. Why are these students working? Some say they like it, but others want the money and experience. What do they want the money for? Some students are sav- ing their money for college, cars, clothes, and various other goals. Other don’t think any farther than Saturday night- spend, spend, spend for gas, food, and a good time. 14

DONNELLY’S OFFICE Top left-Lauri Mills helps Mr. Donnelly set up the second semester class schedules. Top right-Nancy Hotz waits patiently as Mr. Donnelly peeks into his grade book. Bottom-The office table is always full of books and magazines to indulge the student mind. “I need a pass for second hour.” “Can four of us come in?” “I’m drop- ping art, I want to see my schedule.” “I’ve got problems ...” “Where’s the U. of I. catalog of classes?” “What were my ACT scores?” It’s all right here in the guidance office. The disorganization, clutter, tests, and fun. Students come to the office for personal, class, college or career guidance and just to sit and talk. Mr. Donnelly is there for no one’s benefit but ours-the students at Lone Tree High. Everybody’s welcome if you like close quarters and don’t mind the smell of mice and candy. “I feel very responsible for individ- ual and group counseling. I’m here to help the kids with family, social and academic problems as well as schedule and testing.” reports Mr. Donnelly. He enjoys helping people and con- siders the students very reliable and full of enthusasiam, though it’s not always over schoolwork. u
