Some seem to feel that the days gone by were much more simplistic and easy to enjoy, many of us yearn for them. Some of today’s nostalgia is reflected in the 50’s type shows such as Happy Days, LaVcrne and Shirley, and Ameri- can Graffiti. Hairstyles and clothing have gone back to this nostalgic era also. Girls are wearing head bands again while the skirts have gotten longer, sweaters are again heavy, bulky knit with designs and the T-strap shoe is back. It has occurred to us that today will, at sometime, be a nostalgic time for the students at Lone Tree. Most of the present students scoff at the idea of high school being nos- talgic. However, there are a few who feel that in the future they will look back on high school with fond, some- times wistful and sentimental mem- ories with a possible yearning to re- turn. They know that they’ve got it pretty easy now, and at sometime they'll probably wish they were back in high school after they find out what it’s like being on their own without any teachers and administrators to look over their shoulders. j Now the graduating seniors are go- ing to see what the alumni mean when they talk about the good old high school days. They’ve had a lot of fun times as a class this year, and many will realize at graduation what the good old days really are. 6 Student Life Homecoming ff vp£ MAKE ■M lions A NM1E $ jCMD(X ______ — Mr. Barton, Ms. Welter, and Lauri MilU model their favorite cartoon characters during Homecoming Week. 1976 Homecoming candidates from top to bottom: Brenda Slaughter, Kathy Warson, Jancnc Johnson, Bill Larew, Tom Schreiber, Jerry Ford. The cheerleaders organized the following activities for spirit week: clown, cos- tume. hat, shoe, black and gold day. A bonfire and pep rally were held Thursday night. 9 Friday afternoon activities began with the annual Homecoming Parade. Later that evening, the Lions played the Highland Huskies, but lost after putting forth a great effort. Following the game, Bill Larew and Jancne Johnson were crowned Homecoming King and Queen at the dance. The Freshmen’s third place float. The Student Council tliis year has tried to include more activities than just traditional ones such as the Home- coming parade, decorating the Christ- mas tree, and having the annual Kol- ache Hop. Changes made included an effort to open their proceedings to the citizens of LTHS. The first meeting of every month is now open to any student who wishes to speak to the council. The council did much of its business this year in committees. From time to time, ideas and advice from non- council members helped these com- mittees shape their recommendations to the entire council. Student Council proposals which have not yet been finalized include: revising the marking system to include plus and minus signs on report cards; setting up a policy statement on how coaches should deal with students who have to miss their practice because of practice for another school activity; and, a student lounge. Later activ- ities involved fruit sales, the grain show, and garden seed sales. FFA members participated in vari- ous contests throughout the year in- cluding Soil Judging, Parliamentary Procedure, and Extemporaneous Speaking Contests. Members also at- tended the State and National FFA Conventions. FFA Sweetheart Kathy Warson reigned over the 76-77 year. Lone Tree FHA brought to a close another busy year. The 76-77 year contained a lot of traditional activities interlaced with new activities. Perfect attendance at the FHA Dis- trict Meeting sent members home with the traveling trophy given each year to the school with the highest percent of its members present. December included Christmas carol- ing at Children’s Hospital and leaving behind stuffed toys for the children. They topped the chilly night ydui din- ner and a gift exchange at the Brown Bottle. Trying something new, they spon- sored a chili supper after a home bas- ketball game. FHA Week and their Senior Citizen Valentine’s Day Party kept the month of February rolling. Spring and summer activities in- cluded a career trip and a summer trip. FHA enables you to gain personal satisfaction through helping other people. 15 16 17 18 elm STAFF Sitting on the floor: B. Somewhere under all of this you found many newspaper and annual staff members hard at work on The Elm, The Senior Memory Book, and the Lions’ Den. The editors of Lone Tree publica- tions chipped away at the mountains of responsibility that faced them, hurridly trying to complete that lay- out or article that was due four days ago. Through the long hours spent as- signing, writing copy and articles, glu- ing pictures, proofreading, and typing, the press continues to work and the finished products appear; your Elm, lions’ Den, and Memory Book. 23 The KEYS program was started last year by Kirkwood Community College to give seniors a skill so they might be employed right after graduation. The classes offered include Auto Mechanics, Data-processing, Nurses Aid Train- ing, Horticulture, Electronics, and Welding. Data-processing, and Nurses Aid Train- ing are offered one semester, and the others are for a full year. Participation at LTHS has been very good. This year we had nineteen seniors en- rolled in these classes. Every afternoon the group climbed on the bus and rode to Iowa City for two hours of class. KEYS Most of the students that were en- rolled thought it was well worth the time spent. Mr. Cannon, Guidance Counselor, thought it was a very valu- able addition to our course offerings, because it enabled people to explore vocational areas that they hadn’t had the chance to do before. 25 Spanish Glub The number of students in Spanish I tripled in comparison to last year’s class enlarging the club as a whole to one of the largest in years. One of the main activities for the Spanish Club this year was an elabor- ate Spanish meal in which much work was done by the students. The larger number of members also enabled the Gub to have a car wash in the spring. Back Row: J. Musser. D. Eden, D. Nicklaus. M. Hanks. D. Zimmerman. P. Pearson, D. Nichol- son, C. Chabal. K. It was actually his daughter (Deanna Nicholson) who revealed to the police his plans in order to keep him from leading a life of crime. Between his daughter, his wife (Lu Ann Coan) and assorted extras they did a good job of keeping him out of trouble. The plot unfolded in the outdoor cafe of a health resort complete with two incompetent cops (Dallas Simmons and Bill Smith) and a ho- tel detective (Jeff Musser) who had enough trou- ble keeping themselves straight, let alone anyone else. Unexpected family members and other weird characters kept popping up throughout the play. As predicted, Deanna with the help of her mother and the cops-kept Colonel Swillwell out of trouble. This year’s cast put forth a lot of work on the play and it must have paid off, because the audience seemed to enjoy it. 29 Pep Band 1st. row: S. Edwards, L. Burk, K. Viner, L. Borg, K. Schavcr, A. After receiving their high rat- ing, they traveled to the State Contest at Muscatine and received a “2” rating. Lions Gain Experience In76 This years football season was a rough, but challenging one as the young Lions won one and lost eight. Mr. Brower could be quoted as saying, “There were as many freshmen and sophomores as there were juniors and seniors, and I thought the guys never gave up and had a lot of fun during the season.” The highlight of the football season was the Lion’s win over Morning Sun, 14-8. The last home game was parent’s night, where the Lions faced the New London Tigers. The Lions had their highest point total of the season when they played New London, playing them close until late in the fourth quarter. The Lions had a much improved season this year by raising their 4-13 record to an 8-8 record. The boys this year worked hard and hustled to make this improvement. The team will be losing three start- ers at the end of this season: Bruce Loan, Jerry Ford, and Pete Scott. Pete lead the team in scoring and rebound- ing and will be greatly missed. Coach McCulla feels, “The returning Lions will have less experience than this year’s team, but should be an im- proved team if they work to develop their potential.” With returning start- ers Keith Hotz and Jim Ford, and the J.V. team that was 6-3 this season, next year looks promising. In the conference standings Lone Tree finished 6th. Mr. McCulla sum- med up the season by saying, “Hard work and determination helped the boys’ varsity basketball team to have a most respectable season. Their effort made the season most rewarding to themselves, their coaches, and their fans. Keith gives his man a fake. 40 ROYS I IM.SII SEASON AT .500 MARK Keith shoots for the first of two. They know what real team effort is, and this year showed much improvement because of this. Mr. Berry could be quoted as saying, “The wrestlers had super attitudes which added up to more wins.” More pins this year were one of the highlights, but next year Mr. Berry hopes for more. Dave Coan’s extra effort paid off as he posted the most wins for the team. His season record was 13-7 and third in the Sectionals. Out of thirteen guys that wrestled this year, nine will be re- turning. Mr. Berry said that this year went better than he thought, and they’ll only progress next year as long as they keep up the good team effort. Front: D. Coan, T. Sexton, C. Slutts, J. Burk, R. Dunn. Feldman Office Aides Those students you see going around tak- ing the attendance slips from the classes are the busy office aids. They are also kept busy by answering telephone calls and running errands for Mrs. Grecian. Library Aides Your hourly assistants were always on hand in the library “aiding” you in your every need. These people checked books in and out and had the tedious task of putting the books away that you pulled out. These aides were sacrificing valuable study hall time to help you and Mrs. Jarms keep our library running smooth like a river of knowl- edge. Don’t let it overflow. Services Lack of pans, dirty dishes, and fussy kids, don’t delay our cooks at all. Millie takes spatula in hand, Becky holds onto the bowl, Catherine starts the oven, Margaret adds the ingredients, and Grynneth stands by waiting for the noon stampede. Who says cooks have it easy? Cooks: Grynneth Parizek, Becky Make, Mildred Johnson, Catherine Mills, Margaret Hawthorn Dirty floors, broken boilers, greasy windows, trash, plugged plumbing, electrical disconnections, and messy blackboards don’t stop our janitors. With mop in one hand, bucket in other, screwdriver in mouth and wrench in pocket, nothing stops them from keep- ing the school running smoothly. With Zarb leading, Snooky in the middle, and Flash bringing up the rear, they leave no area untouched. Custodians: Bill Shafer, Roberta Zaruba. Mike Zaruba (not pictured). Neither rain, nor snow, nor freezing winds stop our bus drivers from pulling through. Grinding gears, icy steering wheel, and frozen clutch, are the many excitements of being a bus driver. Why do they have to be so efficient? Without all these services, where would the students of Lone Tree be? Bus Drivers: Velma Kasper, Miriam Hunter, Joy Edwards, Wilbur Huff, Robert Baker, Edgar Lewis, Jr., (not pictured) Vida Wollrab 81 82 Elementary s I X T II G It n i I; 84 Mis.
