The Curious Savage was presented by the Senior Class on April 12, 1973. Denise Larew played the leading role, Ethel P. Savage, a sweet little old lady, whose penchant for doing things such as dying her hair blue, carry- ing around a teddy bear and deciding to become an actress in her advanced years has led her stepchildren, Titus, Samuel and Lily Belle, played by Paul Schomberg, Charles Walker and Terri Hotz, to commit her to The Clois- ters, a private asylum, run by Dr. Emmett, played by Gary Kuhlmann and Miss Willie, Marsha Swanson. There she meets a charming assortment of inmates. Lester Kane, as Hannibal, who thinks his screeching passes for violin playing; Jeff, played by Kyle Chown, who will show no one his imaginary facial scars; Florence, portrayed by Julie Eckhoff, whose doll is her substitute child; Gloria Zibilich as Mrs. Paddy, who hates everything in the world, and Fairy Mae, Terri Ford, a plain girl with delusions of great beauty. The family realizes that it was a mistake to commit Old Mom, when they discover that she has sold con- trolling interest in fifteen Savage industries in order to finance a Memorial Fund, with the sole purpose of giving money to people with foolish dreams. As the money is lost, found, thought destroyed, and found again, Mrs. Sav- age and her new-found friends at The Cloisters lead the rest of the family on a merry chase that more than once borders on chaos. Also instrumental in making the play a success were Dwight Marine, State Manager; Kris Musser, Assistant Director; David Yakish, Stage; Ken Kane, Stage; Jeff Hall, Stage; Colene Grecian, Make-up; Liz Eckhoff and Lisa Slaughter, prompters. Additional help was given by Steve Feldman, Jerry Ford, and Chris Westfall. John Kane's appearance as John Thomas must also be mentioned, although he was not listed in the program, since his role is meant to surprise the audience. Dr. Montague is a psychic researcher who gathers together three people who have had experiences, in hope that Hill House will perform for them. At night, after the practical housekeeper has gone home. Hill House does indeed seem to be full of things that go bump in the night, but they all seem to be directed toward Eleanor, rather than Dr.Montague, Luke or Theodora. Strangely enough, Eleanor seems to be as attracted to the house as it is to her. When Mis. Montague, arrives with the obnoxious Arthur Parker, the ghostly phenomena increase. Finally realizing what kind of hold the house has on Eleanor, the doctor attempts to send her away. Although she begs to stay, he is firm. At the last moment, Eleanor is possessed by a desire to turn the steering wheel of the car as she goes out the drive. She realizes too late what she is doing and crashes into a large tree. The Rats opening loss to Columbus Junction 72-0 set a national record, however, it should be noted that this was the first varsity wrestling meet ever for the team. New London furnished the Lions with their only win of the season. This came before a home crowd as the outcome of the meet was decided when Paul Forbes pinned Ferlin Edington in heavyweight com- petition. Tremendous steps were taken toward Lone Tree becoming a fine wrestling school as only one senior will be lost from the team. One problem this year was the lack of wrestlers participating. At least two meets were lost because Lone Tree did not have the wrestlers to fill all the weight brackets. This problem will be solved when there is an established wrestling program in the lower grades at Lone Tree. K. Kirchner L. Pearson C. Forbes P. Mills Track r Front row: T. Hotz, M. Smith, C. The sixth graders from Room 223 presented a play for their parents and the elementary grades in January, entitled HANS BRINKER. During the course of the year the students studied about smoking, drugs, and alcohol. Each student sent for free information from various sources. As soon as this project was completed they began a study of photography. Each child purchased a camera for 65 and the class developed their films in their own room. Front to back: Danny Sorrell, Richard Ross- man, Ed Pechous, Robert Kane, Jim Loan, Dennis Kane, Chris Murphy. Bah, humbug! Not our sentiments but our favor- ite response since we presented Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL to parents and the elementary grades. Everyone in Room 222 took part and we regard it as one of the highlights of our school year. This was the year, too, to discover our Latin America neighbors. Short of visiting the countries, we used a variety of methods to learn about their ways and customs. We tried our hands at making tortillas Mexican style, had visits from Jane Ford and Virginia Young to tell of their experiences in Columbia, wrote reports, and viewed films. While studying communications and sound in sci- ence we took an informative trip to the Bell Telephone Co. in Iowa City. A look at all the wires make the mir- acle of the telephone even more mysterious. The sixth grade was in charge of safety patrol this year and often one of us could be seen standing freezing or wet at the corner making sure younger students crossed safely. Reading from top to bottom: Miss Hill, Allan Smith, Dana Heitland, Doug Eden, Penny Pearson, Mary Hartley, Eddie Pechous, Dennis Kane, Dawn Kuhlmann, Clairene Michael, Janie Vanourney, Mitch Hanks, Donna Lucas, Gary Attig, Kevin Nelson, Patty Kasper. 75 When is a fifth grader not a fifth grader? When he's acting out a play, of course. Room 118 presented a play for the entire elementary school at Christmas time and found their long hours of practice a rewarding experience and one they'll long remember. Off stage, fifth graders were learning long division and fractions in math. Science and health focused on the human body and the physical community. Book twelve reading group enjoyed units on mythology and ecology and followed the adventures of many tall tale characters through a unit on humor. All studies were supplemented with use of filmstrips, movies, tapes and listening labs, to give variety in learning. Reading from top to bottom: Wayne Schnoebelen, Randy Rayner, Cheryl Schlote, Lisa Sedlacek, Donnie Forbes, Donna Smith, Angie Mamer, Cindi Chabel, Scott Johnson, Sherry White, Miss Teufel, Larry Herring, David Hemsted, Jeff Viner, Tom Nolan, John Slaughter, Steve Yakish. 76 We have been very busy this year learning many new things. In Social Studies we read about each state in the United States. Fractions were a new and interesting experience. We learned a lot about the history of our own state. Iowa. Reading from top to bottom: Nancy Zaruba, Robin Phares, Becky Barnes, Jeff Musser, JoAnn White. Danny Pettit, Doug Wieland, Pat Rayner, Mrs. Westlake, Terry Menzer, De- anna Nicholson, Lisa Westfall, Lori Werbach, Kay Carpenter, Steve Hotz, Clayton Slutts, David Whet- stine, Linda Forbes. 77 Reading from top to bottom: Brett Holloway, Bill Gerot, Anne Pechous, Miss Anderson, John Forbes. Some of the highlights of the 1972-73 school year in Miss Ander- son's fourth grade have been learning the basic fundamentals of geometry, publishing their own THANKSAZINE magazine, writing and presenting their own plays, making a relief map of North America from crepe paper, clay-constructing Indian villages similar to those characteristic of the Indians of Iowa, presenting a parade of floats of our fifty states, and learning more about the nutritional value of certain foods by conducting a food study project. 78 School days for those in Room 115 mean the times table, individualized reading, writing letters, building stronger bodies in physical educa- tion, learning good dental health habits, being artists, dividing, in- terest activity, singing, projects based on certain big cities, learning what to eat, keeping up with current events, practicing good citizenship —these and many more things. Reading from top to bottom: David Lucas, Jim Dickey, Kenny Musser, Julie Lenz, David Ford, Sheri Edwards, Bill Schreiber, Kirsten Rife, David Nolan, Anita Duffey, Chris Eden, Mrs. Ford, Ron Schmitt, Kim Mapel, Stacy Phares, Leonard Marine, Eric Schnoebelen, Tom Smith, Lisa Kilgore, Connie Brissee, Tamra Poggenpohl, Lyn Gockel, Denise Eden. 79 Many highlights mark the year for the members of both Sections of third grade. In October we had a six weeks' unit on Dental Health. Hy- gienists from the University of Iowa came and taught us how to take care of our teeth. This was a unit corre- lating with our regular Health cur- riculum. Cursive writing becomes the in- terest of second graders as they move into thrid grade. We spent the first semester learning the strokes in- volved in making the letters and the second semester we put to use what we have learned. It takes a lot of practice. To promote better spelling we have a chart for Friday's test. Any- one getting a perfect paper receives a gold star. For quarter tests we re- ceive a smiley sticker. Reading from top to bottom: Angie Krueger, Lori Borg, David Bender, Lisa Herring, Debbie Murdock, Doug Zaruba, Beth Pechous, Kim Shipley, Ben Walker, Mrs. Draper, Neal Pearson, Sheri Burr, Christy Hotz, Christine Brenneman, Jimmy John- son, Trisha Yakish. SO Our social studies goal is to awak- en an awareness of the community in which the children live and of other communities of their country and the world. In the fall we study Indians for six weeks. This includes activi- ties and culminates in a Pilgrim- Indian feast. We eat foods the Ind- ians gave us. The unit on Hawaii is expanded and includes eating an Hawaiian meal. Reading from top to bottom: Mrs. Nicholson. Chuck Oberman, David Rayner, Eddie Eden, LuAnn Heath, Theresa Schnoebelen. Donna Robert- son. Krista Viner, Steve Burr, Steve Nolan, Diana Hartley. Deanna Eden, Charles Huff, Bobby Sedlacek. 81 This year our room has had some interesting field trips. We studied foods and took a trip to Eden's truck farm. The we made bread, jelly, butter and tomato juice. We have also studied housing and tools, then visited the lumber yard and Mr. Dor- azil’s new house to watch construc- tion and see materials used. We are going to give some puppet plays about fairy tales and fables. We are studying fairy tales and fables in reading. Our school year is going by fast. It must be because we are enjoying ourselves. Reading from top to bottom: Tony Krueger, Ted Schlote, Cheryl Hotz, Sheila Selck, Michele Kout, Christy Schom- berg, Jill Johnson, Greg Strebral, Scott Pechman, Betty Schreiber, Keith Lenz, Roy Warson, Brian Werbach, Teina Smith, Steven Forbes, Mrs. Cross, Jill Musser, Kenny Ford, Mary Gingerich, William Eden, Robby Besst, Rini Hudachek, Chaele Zaruba, Paula Kane. 82 Reading from top to bottom: Karen Hemsted, Renee Car- penter, Sheila Carpenter, Brian Corso, Tracy Thompson, Andrea Brenneman, Shelly Murphy, Randy Stozen, Timmy Sedlacek, Randy Slaughter, Randy Hotz, Kelly Hanks, Miss Tindall, Laurie Gilroy, Jackie Kerf, Brian Kuhlmann, Russ Chabal, Connie Flynn, Rick Meyer, Todd Lorack, Steve Musser, Clarence Kane, Dan Gockel. There are 12 boys and 10 girls in our second grade. This year has been a reading and doing year. We read about the truck farm and then took a trip to Eden's truck farm. We studied fruits and orchards, butter from the dairy, and how bread comes from a wheat farm. After each we made the jelly, butter, or bread. We learned about other communities and now we have begun studying our community. Our class is always wide awake because we do exer- cises as a group in the morning if we don't have gym class. These second graders are good at playing Spelling Baseball. We can only have one OUT in an inning. 83 Reading from cop to bottom: Donna Whetstine, Tanya Bez- korovainy, Michael Waldschmidt, John Kane, Calvin Hol- loway, James Graham, Mrs. Cook, Orville Randolph, Lisa Schuessler, Russel Rayner, Laura Chockley, David Pech- man, Lori Yedlik, Kevin Hotz, Mitch Corso, Cathy Bren- neman, Steve Meyers, Kathy Gockel, Lori Yakish. There are eight girls and ten boys in our room. The First graders have adjusted now to first grade and are finding there is much Big Business to take care of each day. It is surprising how they can read in their own readers and pick up out- side reading books and library books and read from them. We are planning dramatizations and puppet shows about the Lion and the Mouse and the Ginger- bread Boy. Our new health books, Health and Growth are very interesting. If we practice what we are learning we will be healthy and strong. 84 Reading from top to bottom: Clinton Walker, Brian Keep, Debora Eden, Phillip Green, Kevin Strebral, Ther- esa Whetstine, Ronnie Flake, Sam Davis, Colette Stonebarger, Chris Lenz, Brian Selk. We are learn- ing how to get along with each other and to be good stu- dents. We have been busy with many special projects. We made 3 feet high and 2 feet wide lion cub paintings for the Homecoming parade. The bus we rode in was covered with our 90 foot painting! When we made vegetable soup, taffy apples, and popcorn, the whole school hungrily smelled its way to Room 109. Miller’s Cafe asked us to paint Halloween decorations for them so that everyone could see our scary pictures. We made a Me” book of pictures. We made pictures of me, my father, my mother, my brothers and sisters, my pets, my house, my car, my favorite things. We learned song plays for Thanks Thanksgiving and Christmas. We sang on stage for every- one at the Christmas Concert. Reading from top to bottom: Mrs. Brown, Bradley Shingledecker, Jeff Huff, Todd Krueger, Dawn Hills, Billy Whetstine, Susie Pettit.
