STANDING: Rick Jarrard, Rory Marner, Steve Hill, Rita Schuessler, Don Brown, Pat Hudacheck, Steve Jansen, Beth Grable, Max Chown, Eileen Shaughnessy, Dennis Ab- bott. Student Council Student Council elections were held at the be- ginning of the school year. Anyone could try out by presenting a speech to the student body contain- ing reasons for their desire to join the club. The student body then held a popular vote, electing two members of each class to the organization. The class presidents automatically became members. This year the Pep Club was incorporated into the Student Council: the Pep Club was dissolved and the Student Council assumed their duties. Eileen Shaughnessy, president of the Pep Club, and Steve Jansen, vice-president, became members of the Student Council to promote the Pep Club's interests. The school Christmas tree, donated by Homer Eden, was felled and decorated by the Student Council. The Thanksgiving Dance and the Carrie Stanley Scholarship Dance were held to raise money for the Carrie Stanley Scholarship. The Scholarship Dance was held on April first with the Children of Darkness furnishing the music. Honor Society The Lone Tree High School Gymnasium was the scene for the induction of nine new members, four seniors and five juniors, to the National Honor Society, Monday, March 6th. Following an introduction given by Mrs. Donald Sievert, chapter sponsor, present members gave short de- scriptions of the four qualities sought in members. Chapter president Pat Dougherty installed the new members. For each member a candle was lit from a central candle symbolizing the light of knowledge. The new mem- bers then recited the National Honor Society Pledge. The Honor Society was set up to recognize the student who excels scholastically. Students are chosen on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Instead of the usual afternoon tea, an evening tea was held on Tuesday, March seventh, honoring the new members and their parents. Hostesses Margaret, Nancy, Nancy, Mrs. Sievert, Kathy, and Pat at the induction tea. NEW MEMBERS--SITTING: Alan Burr, Colleen Duffey, Bev Herring, Steve Hill. Five members received I ratings and two received ratings of II at State finals held in Ottumwa. Two members participated in Iowa High School Forensic finals April 14 and 15.
