For some of you it will be the end of your formal education; I hope that we have prepared you to take your place in the adult society. For most of you, it is only the completion of one step in your formal ed- ucation; benefit from your experiences here and im- prove upon your records in your future schooling. To all of the class, best of luck in all your future endeavors and in the future may you look back on your high school days with pleasure. Charles Piper When an event has taken place, it has become history. It is so with the incidents recorded in this year's annual. The history of one year's happenings in the life of the Lone Tree Community School--the humor, honors, and defeats are all here. Your record has been good; you have had a fine year. Honor Society The Lone Tree High School Gymnasium was the scene for the induction of nine new members, four seniors and five juniors, to the National Honor Society, Monday, March 6th. Following an introduction given by Mrs. Donald Sievert, chapter sponsor, present members gave short de- scriptions of the four qualities sought in members. Chapter president Pat Dougherty installed the new members. For each member a candle was lit from a central candle symbolizing the light of knowledge. The new mem- bers then recited the National Honor Society Pledge. The Honor Society was set up to recognize the student who excels scholastically. Students are chosen on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Instead of the usual afternoon tea, an evening tea was held on Tuesday, March seventh, honoring the new members and their parents. Anyone could try out by presenting a speech to the student body contain- ing reasons for their desire to join the club. The student body then held a popular vote, electing two members of each class to the organization. The class presidents automatically became members. This year the Pep Club was incorporated into the Student Council: the Pep Club was dissolved and the Student Council assumed their duties. Eileen Shaughnessy, president of the Pep Club, and Steve Jansen, vice-president, became members of the Student Council to promote the Pep Club's interests. The school Christmas tree, donated by Homer Eden, was felled and decorated by the Student Council. The Thanksgiving Dance and the Carrie Stanley Scholarship Dance were held to raise money for the Carrie Stanley Scholarship. The Scholarship Dance was held on April first with the Children of Darkness furnishing the music. The L. T. school paper is entitled the School Mirror and is edited in the Lone Tree Reporter. The pur- pose of the School Mirror is to bring a closer connection between the school and students and the parents and surrounding community. One of the main attractions of the school paper is the senior sketches. Another project of the paper staff is the Senior Memories booklet. The booklet consists of the class his- tory and will, the class prophecy, roll call, famous quotes, and the senior crossword puzzle, all of which are written by the paper staff members. This year the annual staff decided to try something new; that is, to have a summer annual. By so doing, the annual will contain snaps of prom, graduation, senior class trip, and the junior class play. The annual staff felt that by publishing a summer annual the school would have a complete yearbook. The seniors sold ads to finance the annual on Thursday, September 8 by visiting businesses in the surround- ing communities. The staff also acquired a new camera by raising money from the pop stand at one basketball game. Under the direction of the new head librarian, Mrs. Sievert, the library has added several new functions to its service. A browsing shelf displays new books, and for three month periods the Area 10 Library supplements the school library with twenty-five books. Records for education and entertainment--a completely new and different concept for the library--is an- other facet which shows the library's growth. Musical selections range from Brigadoon (a musical comedy), to compositions by Bach. It also features literature records varying from Mark Twain's Mississippi to Le Morte D'Arthur . The study hall features a bulletin board designed and decorated by student librarians Pat, Patsy, Marsha, and Maurene. These four and other student librarians also do some clerical work and prepare books for circula- tion, in addition to presiding at the librarian's desk. In May, the library staff visited the Hoover Library in West Branch, allowing them to learn how an histor- ical library operates. The machine matches her with Charles Fenton, the shy roommate of Stan Parker--Julie’s boy friend. Connie thinks the machine was damaged during the moving process since it obviously mismatches several people. She then employs the services of Marvin and Mr. Sullivan, repairmen, to fix the machine. The group stayed at Kirkwood Lodge which is a private resort that caters to high school groups. After a meeting discussing lodge rules and schedules, the students found their rooms and began to partici- pate in various activities. A square dance, weiner roast, and talent contest were on the curriculum for Friday evening. One senior, Steve Hill, joined in the talent contest with the other visiting schools. The following morning was spent in the com- mercial district of the town. In the early afternoon, the class left for home making one stop for supper at the Mark Twain Hotel in Hannibal, Missouri. Santa Cheerleader Nancy Marine presides over the most important Christmas gift--a cheer for victory! In this skit, the cheerleaders represented a car. Cheerleaders The cheerleaders' big project for the year was to make pennants of all the schools in the confer- ence to hang in the gymnasium. To raise money for this purpose, they sponsored two bake sales and a sock hop. They were also in charge of the pop stand for a game; volunteers ran the stand while the cheerleaders were attending their usual duties of a game. The pennants were made by the cheer- leaders and their sponsor, Mrs. Maner. This year for the first time the cheerleaders attended the Girls' State Basketball Tournaments in Des Moines, March 10 11.
