BACK ROW: Dave Fellner, Jim Jondle, Clara Guthrie, Bob Horak, Cay Bell, Dean Lovetinsky, Linda Barton, David Warn. Superintendent H. G. Hayes, in addition to his administra- tive duties, teaches a course in chemistry and serves as a senior class sponsor and adviser to the student science organization, AFARASP. Adult evening school classes and F.F.A. activities fill many hours for J. Curtis Muncy, vocational agriculture instructor. Mr. Muncy teaches three vocational agriculture classes, is F.F.A. adviser and a junior class sponsor. William Kimbler’s name heads a long list of activities, most of them centered around athletics. Mr. Kimber is the head coach for football, high school and junior high boys’ basketball, and track. He is also boys’ physical education instructor for high school and grades five and six. His teaching load includes four classes -- freshman and sopho- more algebra, advanxed algebra, and physiology. He is a freshman class sponsor. Mrs. Celia Jones, home economics instructor, shares the lunchroom with the cooks. Working around the noonhour lunch schedule, she manages to teach sewing and cooking to her freshman and sophomore home economics classes and tailoring to the senior home economic students. Mrs. Jones also teaches a general science course in addition to her duties as a junior class sponsor. Business education instructor at Lone Tree High is Mrs. Julie Pipho, who teaches shorthand, office practice and two classes in typing. Mrs. Pipho is a senior class sponsor and also adviser to the School Mirror staff and Elm staff. ABOVE J. Curtis Muncy William Kimber LEFT Mrs. Celia Jones Mrs. Julie Pipho Principal, Mabel E. Brown Mrs. Mabel Brown, principal, teaches junior and senior English and biology. She is a sophomore class sponsor, girls’ basketball chaperone, and library staff adviser. Mrs. Brown also directs the junior and senior class plays. Mrs. Jo Ann Eggert teaches almost every student in Lone Tree Community School; she is the vocal music instruc- tor for all grades, kindergarten through twelfth. In addi- tion to this full schedule, she is also the sophomore En- glish instructor and a freshman class sponsor. Another of the junior class sponsors is Benjamin C. Doup. Mr. Doup's instrumental music activities include march- ing band, pep band, and the junior band. He also teaches freshman English. Miss Carrie Stanley teaches Latin 1 and II and gives reme- dial English help to many students, both in high school and in the grades. This year Miss Stanley is teaching German to the seventh graders. Also a member of the athletic staff is LaVerne Barton, who is assistant football coach and who also coaches high school and junior high girls' basketball, baseball, and girls’ softball. He is girls’ physical education instructor for high school and grades five and six. Mr. Barton, a sophomore class sponsor, teaches world history, American History, and government-economics. ABOVE Mrs. Jo Ann Eggert Benjamin C. Doup LEFT Miss Carrie Stanley LaVerne Barton Mrs. Alyce Brown has been secretary to the superinten- dent at Lone Tree Community School for two years. Her day is filled with many varied jobs: writing letters, order- ing supplies, keeping lunch records, and sorting mail. Besides all this, Alyce still finds time to help students who come in with letter-writing and duplicating problems. For the first time this year, the grade school faculty mem- bers have the assistance of teachers-aids. While they can- not assume any of the teaching duties of the teachers, the aids perform a valuable service by helping with supervision, duplicating and related duties. Mrs. Rose Mary Lewis assists with grades one, two and three; Mrs. Lucille Green, with grades four, five, and six. Under the supervision of Mrs. Eleanora Hora, head cook, the hot lunch program once again got underway in Septem- ber. The meals are prepared with the combined talents of Mrs. Hora, Mrs. Louise Forbes, Mrs. Monna Flake, and Mrs. Iva Jarrard. The average daily attendance in the lunchroom is three hundred thirty-five students. With seven buildings to clean besides the high school and gym, our custodians, A1 Kinkaid and Bill Riggan, are kept busy. In addition. Bill drives a regular school bus route; and both men spend the noon hour bringing students from the other buildings to the lunchroom in the high school building. As if that were not enough, they also lend a help- ing hand when faculty or students have odds and ends that need to be done. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, the school bus drivers take on the responsibility of transporting the country students to and from school. This year’s bus driv- ers are Edward Bachman, Bill Riggan, Ralph Slaughter, Robert Dickey, and Lester Bell. Each day in the library is begun when Mary Ellen Malone places the current issues of the three daily newspapers on the rack and the current issues of the fifty magazines in the magazine rack. The fifty magazines to which the school sub- scribes, coupled with the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature, are a definite asset to our library, as they enable us to keep up with the latest information in almost anv field. Because most of the fiction books were de- stroyed in the school fire in 1956, those that remain are supplemented each semester by one hundred books from the ISEA travel- ing library and four hundred books from the Iowa City Public Library. All reference books are our own, however. There are approximately two hundred of these, not including four sets of encyclopedias. Some of the new and interesting reference books acquired this year include the cur- rent VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCY- CLOPEDIA, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SPORTS, THE DICTIONARY OF ANTIQUES AND THE DECORATIVE ARTS, and THE FASHION DICTIONARY. BENNER FOOD STORES Iowa City's most complete Super Markets Benner Stop 'N Shop Benner Towncrest Mirror Staff Today’s the deadline, and I don’t have my article finished!” That is the cry heard most often from the members of the School Mir- ror newspaper staff. Carol Riggan, this year’s School Mirror editor, is probably the one person most closely and continuously connected with the problems of a newspaper staff. Carol's “week” begins on Friday when she posts the story assignments for the coming issue. By Wednesday the stories have started coming in from the reporters, and it is time to get them proofread and typed. Last step is to check them with Mrs. Pipho, the advi- ser, on Friday to be sure all errors are corrected and all articles are in. Then it’s time to start all over again! With the exception of the first week of school and Christmas vacation week, an issue of the School Mirror is prepared each week. Each year copies of the school paper are sent to the School of Journalism, at the State University of Iowa, for critical analysis. On the basis of the criticisms and suggestions made by the School, the staff tries to con- tinue to improve the School Mirror. Notable Improvement this year has been the emphasis on news stories from the school. Shir lee Attig, who is a s s i s t a nt editor, is learning the ropes in preparation for step- ping into Carol's position. Randall Hoffman, of Iowa State College, was the speaker. The thirty-four members of the organization and their adviser, Mr. Muncy, found the 1959 State F.F.A. Convention at Davenport profitable and enjoyable. A day in Cedar Rapids, with a tour of the Quaker Oats and Wilson Companies as its climax, proved to be fun, as did the annual swimming party at Tipton. F.F.A. is not all fun, however, for much time is spent in an effort to make the farm of today and tomorrow a better place to live. It is composed of eight charter members; Supterintendent Hayes is adviser. The purpose of the club is to further the members knowledge in all fields of sci- ence, especially astronautics, by experi- mentation and research. The first projects planned by AFARASP are high-altitude rockets. At this writ- ing the members are increasing their knowledge of rocket fuels, launchers, construction of rockets, etc., in order to make the first firing in April more suc- cessful. Carniva I Best Wishes From TIP TOP SANDWICH SHOP Evelyn M. Lantz Lone Tree, Iowa The traditional initiation of freshmen was carried out in the fall. Each freshman was dressed to portray a characer. During the day they acted on the command of the seniors and had to kneel and re- cite the initiation speech. They also bowed to the juniors and saluted the sophomores. Since the softball team had a game in the evening, the freshman girls who were on the team presented a short program in the afternoon. In the evening a program was presented in the gymnasium with the rest of the freshmen providing the entertain- ment. Blue and silver streamers made up the sky from which Japanese lanterns and chimes were hung. The stage front and stage were decorated with fans, butterflies, and Chinese letters on a black background. The bleachers were brightened by aluminum foil on which Chinese figures and emblems were evenly spaced. A red pagoda at the entrance was also used for for serving punch and cookies during the evening. Each corner of the floor had a tree full of pink blossoms. A delicious candlelight dinner was prepared by the mothers of the juniors and was served by Bob Carpenter, David Warn, Larry Krai, Gary Slaughter, Dick Hudachek, Terry Moody, Shirlee Attig, Karyl Musser, Margie Lenz, Lois Mincer, Linda Plum, and Linda Barton. Waiters and waitresses wore cos- tumes fitting the oriental theme. The toast of welcome was given by Donna Mossman, junior class president. The sen- ior class president, Eldon Prybil, gave the response. Janet Pearson gave an amusing Take-Off on the Seniors, while Kirk Cor- bett gave take-offs on the juniors in the form of wise advice for the next year. R. Stewart Bell, president of the school board, and Superintendent H. G. Hayes each gave short talks. Songs by the waiters and wait- resses concluded the program. The remainder of the evening was spent dancing to the music of Jack Figgins and his orchestra. Congratulations To The Class of '59 PLAMOR BOWLING LANES 225 E. SUMMER BASEBALL 1958 During the 1958 summer season. Lone Tree was represented by two baseball teams, both under the direction of Superintendent H. G. Hayes. The Pee Wees (Little League Team) were again tops in the area, although they were unable to join a league. They played nine games and lost only two. On the mound, Ron Cerny proved to be the best pitcher in the area and an able batter; he was pushed in that department, however, by Dwight Krueger. The usual starting line-up was: Cerny, pitcher; Flake, catcher; L. Bell, first; R. Slaughter, second; R. Krueger, short; D. Krueger, third; L. Schaapveld, J. Bell, and D. Scott, field. The Babe Ruth team was not so fortunate, winning two and losing nine. This team was short in pitching talent. TRACK 1959 At the time the yearbook went to press, the track squad, coached by William Kimber, had not yet been formed. The squad members will not be determined until there has been sufficient practice to know whether all of the students who signed up will remain with the squad. Plans call for the team to participate in the Ke-Wash Conference Track Meet, the State Indoor Meet, and the District Outdoor Meet. The 1958-59 squad of cheerleaders backed the Lions through a cold foot- ball season and cheered the Lions and Lionettes through an exciting basket- ball season. Carol, a senior, is our only veteran cheerleader and has cheered all of her four years of high school. She missed only one game in the four years. Sara, a junior, took up cheering for the first time this year. At the end of the first semester, she moved to Colorado. This was the first year for Elizabeth and Clara, too. Elizabeth is a sopho- more; Clara, a freshman. Sandy has been serving as mascot for three years. The girls wore gold and black felt skirts, black blouses, gold vests, and white shoes and socks. After Sara moved, Pete Harty and David Warn helped out as cheerleaders for the remainder of the season.
