As stand-ins in 1955 , they anxiously awaited Freshman Initiation when each of them was costumed as a movie or television star. That same season, many of them enjoyed their first formal Homecoming Dance following the Homecoming Parade in which their float, Well1 Lick Em, won third prize. The following season, as sophomores and bit-players, they decorated the gym for the Homecoming Dance, using the theme All Stars. In addition, several of them appeared as waiters and waitresses at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Then, in 1957 as understudies, they rehearsed busily for the junior class play, Desperate Ambrose. At the close of the season, they honored the senior stars of 57 with an Evening in Paris. The 1958 season was the most active of all. It was their year to initiate the freshmen. Each freshman was made-up to represent a comic strip character. The flu epidemic threatened to halt production of the senior class play, The Woman in Black ; but in true theater spirit, the cast came through with a successful performance. Publication of the yearbook provided the funds for the class trip to Chicago, Illinois, on April 25. As the last performance drew near, the stars attended baccalaureate services in the auditorium on May 25. Commencement exercises were held on May 26, with Phil E. Connell, Assistant to the President of the State University of Iowa, as the speaker. The stars received their diplomas and went on to larger roles on a larger stage. ELDON RALPH PRYBIL President F. Cheryl Buline Advertising Manager..............................Margaret Rowser Although the staff members listed above have very important positions, their jobs still do not complete the making of a year- book. Without those who laid out pages, pasted pictures, typed copy, and sold ads and subscriptions, and without the help of Mrs. Julie Phlpho, our advisor, THE ELM could never have been prepared. 34 No producer on opening night ever had shakier knees or more butterflies than did the staff of Our School in the last days before its first appearance. In spite of tempers lost occasionally when a page had to be cut and pasted again and again; pictures that just could- n't be found; nerves nearly shattered; sleepless nights; the Elm Staff presents your play, an unrehearsed drama with no script. There will be lines we have muffed and cues we have missed; but as you, the critics, view this year's produc- 35 tion, we ask that you be an understanding audience. The Pee Wees had a five-won and one-lost record in the conference. Outside the league, they won two from Hills, one from Riverside, and one from the Iowa City Giants but lost two to Keota. On the league-winning team were Ron Cerny, Neil Bell, Lynn Bell, Ron Slaughter, Gary Swartzendruber, Dwight Krueger, Mike Kirkpatrick, Ron Flake, Mike Forbes, Julius Dusterhoft, Ray Krueger, and Jim Bell.
