l ire Destroys Lone t ree School Christmas Day, 1956, is a day that will long be remembered --for on that day the Lone Tree Public School was destroyed by fire. Books, supplies, desks, etc., went up in flames as did the many fond memories of school days. The fire was discovered about 9:00 a.m. on Christmas Day and was brought under control about noon. There have been many theories about the cause of the fire but it is not certain how it started.

When Lone Tree firemen first arrived on the scene, flames were burning in the open on the west side of the building in the room used as a boys' shower room. Flames also engulfed the southwest corner of the middle room on the first floor, the fourth grade room, and the flames were also shooting up to the room directly above, the fifth grade room. Firemen from Lone Tree, Nichols, Hills, and Riverside fought the blaze but it could not be brought under control. The fire in the upper room finally burned through the ceiling and the strong west wind drove the blaze over most of the false ceiling and into the underside of the roofing. Fire fighting was was made very hazardous because of the smoke which filled the building and the danger of a falling roof section. 4
