1956-1957 Presented By ( lass of 1957 Lone Dee High School Lone tree. Iowa Dedication We, the Senior Class, dedicate our annual to Mrs. Julie Pipho, our sponsor and advisor, with sincere appreciation for all her efforts she has put forth to make our annual a success, and also to our parents, who through their guidance and continued efforts, have made our school days possible. l ire Destroys Lone t ree School Christmas Day, 1956, is a day that will long be remembered --for on that day the Lone Tree Public School was destroyed by fire. Books, supplies, desks, etc., went up in flames as did the many fond memories of school days. The fire was discovered about 9:00 a.m. on Christmas Day and was brought under control about noon. There have been many theories about the cause of the fire but it is not certain how it started. When Lone Tree firemen first arrived on the scene, flames were burning in the open on the west side of the building in the room used as a boys' shower room. Flames also engulfed the southwest corner of the middle room on the first floor, the fourth grade room, and the flames were also shooting up to the room directly above, the fifth grade room. Firemen from Lone Tree, Nichols, Hills, and Riverside fought the blaze but it could not be brought under control. The fire in the upper room finally burned through the ceiling and the strong west wind drove the blaze over most of the false ceiling and into the underside of the roofing. Fire fighting was was made very hazardous because of the smoke which filled the building and the danger of a falling roof section. 4 The fire destroyed the entire upper floor; typewriters removed over the roof of the auditorium were the only articles saved. The first floor was not a complete loss but suf- fered much damage. Most of the equipment in the superintendent's office was saved. Except for the center room on the west side , which was a complete loss, the first floor rooms suffered watei and smoke damage. Because the fire worked up, the damage to the basement floor was confined to minor smoke fumes and water coming from overhead. The basement rooms included: home ec. room, teachers' lounge, athletic equipment room, hot lunch kitchen, pantry, kitchen storage room, and the seventh and eighth grade rooms. A fire in a ventilating tunnel in the girls' rest room was extinguished with great difficulty. In the boiler room, damage was done to wiring on the stoker and coal elevator auger. Of our 16-room school building, an open air shell remained. Though fire dep- artments from Lone Tree, Nichols, Hills, and Riverside fought the $300,000 blaze most of the day, all they could do was save some supplies and the adjoining gymnasium After the fire, education in Lone Tree became a community-wide project --people from town and country began going through the debris and salvaging what they could. Everything that was saved was sorted and cleaned ; and new texts, supplies, desks, and the like were borrowed or bought. Students and faculty members pitched in together to redecorate temporary class rooms and to refinish damaged furniture. Christmas vacation was extended three days; and when the students came back to school, they found their classrooms scat- tered throughout Lone Tree. Grade school students found their new classrooms in the churches, the Legion hall, the Reformed Church parsonage, and the Masonic Temple. The Y-Hall, new and old fire stations, Odd Fellows hall, and locker plant were used for high school classrooms. The hot- lunch program was set up in the locker plant, and a bus system was arranged to transport the grade school children to and from the locker. MARY'S CHURCH 4th and 5th Grades ODD FELLOWS HALL Music MASONIC TEMPLE Primary 10 The school was built in 1914-15 for $35,000 but an identical replacement today would cost about $280,000. The decision was made to tear down the present building to make way for a new build- ing in the future. By March, workmen had begun to raze the old structure, leaving only the undamaged gymnasium standing. 11 Elm Staff Editor.........................................................Mary Anne Flake Business Manager.....................................................Lavon Eden Music Editors...................................................... The class consisted of 17 girls and 15 boys. Its members were: Gayle Nelson, Geneva Wieland, Kenny Murdock, Joyce Johnston, Shirley Lenz, Mary Pechman, Eunice Lenz, Lester Wieland, David Kline, Lavon Eden, Daryl Hirt, Jerry Musser, Rosemary Hospodarsky, Cora Ramsey, Gerald Yakish, Nancy Jarrard, Pat Lenz, Mary Flake, Charlotte Sanders, Janice Eden, Yvonne Hora, Don Krueger, Kay Musser, Nancy Hall, Tom Dawson, John Hudachek, Dale Nelson, Marvin Hotz, Ernest Hall, Bob Polman, Verlyn Hayes, and David Kirkpatrick. Only two of the present Seniors started at Lone Tree in the primary class. They were Mary Flake and David Kline. The highlights of this year were initiation and our first formal homecoming dance. We all nearly burst with pride when our float won second prize. Its theme was It's in the Bag. Does this bring any memories? In the Sophomore year, the events included decorating the gym for the 1954 Homecoming and again winning second prize on our float. Already we were act- ive in football, basketball, and all other extra-curricular activities. We lost one classmate, Gayle Nelson, who transferred to U-High. At the beginning of our Junior year, we discovered that we had four empty seats which had once been filled. These had belonged to Joyce Johnston, Ernie Hall, Cora Ramsey, and Rosemary Hospodarsky. We also gained one classmate, Evelyn Connolly, who joined us later in the year. Our Junior class play, entitled ’’Phantom of the High School, and the 1956 Prom were two important activities this year. The theme for our prom was Neptune's Court. Everyone agreed that it was equally clever and pretty. As the pages on the calander were torn off and forgotten, we found ourselves sitting at the senior desks in September, 1956. Again we had lost classmates. They were Shirley Lenz, Kay Musser, and Nancy Jarrard. Later Bob Polman and Tom Dawson departed from the class. We presented our final class play, called The Babysitter ; and it was a great success. Of course, we enjoyed ourselves tremendously at the 1957 Prom, which the Junior Class sponsored for us. Little did we realize that on December 21, 1956, we would be seeing the class- rooms of L. T. H. S. for the last time. We Seniors are experiencing something that we hope no other class will ever have to experience. We are leaving a school that no longer stands and also our home room located in the fire station. As our memorable high school days dwindle, we are storing away precious memories that we have shared throughout the four years. Now we are eagerly looking forward to the day we 23 Seniors will proudly march down the aisle for Dur diplomas. JERRY BURR MUSSER President F.F.A..............................1.2.3 F. F.A. Each Freshman girl was made to wear a man's shirt, bib overalls, men's boots, at least three pigtails with a different color ribbon in each, and they had to carry lifesavers for the Faculty and Seniors. The boys were made to wear dresses, large earrings, gunny-sack shoes, and they had to carry shoe-shine kits and shine the Faculty's and Senior's shoes whenever requested to do so. They had to obey the Seniors' commands. In the evening, entertainment was provided in the gymnasium by the Freshmen, after which they were given a treat. Freshman Initiation k Class Will I, Lester Wieland, will my glasses to Mrs. Jones so she can see those noisy boys in the back of study hall. I, Dale Nelson, will the time I spend reading cartoons in magazines to Mike Vickers so he will have an excuse to do the same. I, Dave Kline, will my mechanical ability to David Smith so he can follow his father's footsteps. I, Yvonne Hora, will my job at the drug store to Ronnie Hemsted. I'm sure that since Ronnie has nothing to do on Saturday night, he will enjov having something to do. I, John Hudachek, will my scholarship to anyone who wants it! I, Mary Pechman, will my basketball ability to anyone who will make good use of it. I, Verlyn Hayes, will my ability to stay out of trouble to Kenny Barton, who will need it for two more years. I Pat Lenz, will everything to Margaret Rowser so she can continue to follow in my footsteps. I, Daryl Hirt, will my interest in Riverside to Richard and Bill Riggan, who seem to have interests there already. It is now the year 1967. Ten years have passed since the Seniorsof 1957 proudly received their diplomas from L. T. H. S. Let's see what they are now doing. After rodding around in his car for two years, Daryl decided that it was time to settle down and get married to Rosy. They now have four little race drivers. Yvonne started college as she had planned; but after being separated from Duane for two years, she could no longer stand it and they got married in Timbuktu where Duane is stationed. After playing with the Prairie Landers for five years, Gerald graduated to his own name band called Chub's Champs. We don't see much of Charlotte any more. She married a tall, handsome doctor after nurses' training; and they are missionaries in Africa. David Kline joined the Air Force soon after graduation and devised an electronic whichma-digger, which revolutionized aviation. Janice has had her years of fun and is now living on a pony ranch in Texas where she is very busy attending rodeos. Lester served his four years in the Navy. Since he had saved every penny of his pay, he bought the Battleship Iowa, on which he served and on which he and his wife are now spending their honeymoon on a cruise. Mary Anne is now secretary to the president of General Motors where she takes shorthand at 150 words per minute. She and Keith got married in i960. Keith now does his own baby-sitting with four boys. Prophecy Kenny seems to be doing well on his 180-acre farm. It is quite a scenic place. Kenny is still a bachelor but won't be much longer, for Shirley P. and he set the date for June. After spending two lonely years living in a trailer with Charlotte, Pat decided to get married to a tall, handsome man. She is busy taking care of her husband and six little poodles. After marrying Lavon, Dave is very busy operating his 180-acre truck farm and providing for all of their children. After graduating from Ames, Nancy and Don were married. They decided they wanted to see the world, and then they settled in California. Don is a professor, while Nancy is taking care of the two children in their long, long trailer. After attending Parsons College for four years, John graduated with top honors. John and Gayle could no longer stand to be apart so they were married in 1961. Gayle is now taking care of their three children. After finishing nurses' training at Mercy, in Iowa City, Lavon married Dave; and they have started their own nursery. Marvin is now the proud owner of a ranch in Texas. He is married to a Texas gal with blue eyes and blond hair. They have two children. Evelyn and Willie are now settled in a little igloo in Alaska. She has her hands full with two Eskimos, Willie and Nellie. After attending the University of Iowa for four years, Don Krueger is now the head of a construction company, building bridges. You will remember the Brenneman family is famous for twins, but Eunice had to go a step further. She is now very busy taking care of her six-month old triplets. After graduating from West Point Academy, Verlyn is leading a happy life going out with girls, trying to find the right one. Geneva, after leading a wild life in high school, decided on graduation day to reform to a quiet life of studying to be a boys' basketball coach. Jerry is now an instructor of Girls' Physical Education at the University of Iowa. Jerry is still looking for the right girl to come along. After four years of basketball at L. T. H. S. , Mary Kay decided to make this her career. She is now playing at Madison Square Garden with the Professional Handicapped Six. Dale and Barbara were cruising through Lone Tree yesterday in their new pink Lincoln convertible. They were on a business trip to New York City, since Dale is now a top-notch insurance salesman.
