Let's move ahead to 1960 and see where we find the mighty seniors. Pat Hirt, who is now Mrs. Bud Smothers, is at the present time at a bankers con- vention in Chicago with her husband. They left the children in the good hands of Berle, and have decided to make this trip a second honeymoon. Bud is now the president of the bank in Lone Tree and Pat has finally gotten used to ironing seven white shirts a week. Clyde Lenz is now manager of a girls show and night club in Des Moines. His wife is the center of attraction in his floor show. He wears tuxedoes and struts through the establishment every hour on the hour to see that everything is under control and see that the customers aren't making any money on the gambling devices. Darlene Baker, after graduation from LTHS ten years ago took a short business course and is now office girl for Oscar Wiese and Son at the local downtown office. She is still going with fellows from Riverside and West Liberty, but she can't quite make up her mind which one she wants to marry. Harold Owen, the really and truly hard worker of the class of 1950, married Janete eight years ago and now has to get up at 5:00 every morning to run Ham Krai's coal business. He says that he has to work too hard but just to keep peace in the family, he does it with a smile and he hopes that some day his little boy, Harold ID, will be able to take over the business. Margaret Ann Burr, after attending Cornell for six years, is now teaching music in Shueyville, Iowa Public School where Berle is superintendent. Her husband stays at home to take care of the house and their three children, so that she can teach and make enough money to live on. Janet Westfall, after taking a course in shorthand for five years, is now keeping books for Deanie Walsh on their two acre farm where they raise pumpkins, potatoes, and onions. Their children. Jack, Jill, Joan, and Janet n, keep the pumpkins, potatoes, and onions picked and hoed and bug-free. Their residence is the old Dan Walker farm that Janet's father bought just for them when they got married. Calvin Lavely is taking a sun bath in the back yard while Marlene is out plowing corn with a team of horses as they haven't yet been able to afford a tractor. Their sixty acre farm is all bottom land and every spring the Iowa river overflows and drowns out their crops so that they are very hard up. Calvin wants to move to Missouri where it's warmer, but Marlene likes Iowa better. Berle Smothers, after attending Iowa State Teachers College for eight years to get his four year degree, is now superintendent at Shueyville, Iowa. He coaches the girls basketball team there, which as usual has not won a game for six years. His wife and two little boys are still confident that they can win, but Berle is becoming very discouraged.
