It will bring back so very many happy and pleasant memories, and perhaps some poignant memories, of old friends and acquaintances. The preparation of this book has been a huge task very ably ac- complished by the hard work of the yearbook staff. The editors, Karen Eck and Meg Gaily, have done a magnificent job assisted by many others and their staff advisor Mr. Demaray. This year the school grew con- siderably in size and the spirit has never been better. Our students, staff and the community have given a tremendous force to our activities. Not the least of these is the gaining of three city championships in one week. A great deal of this is due to the efforts of our graduating class and the student leaders. I offer my thanks to the graduating students for your efforts during your years in the school. May good fortune go with you in your futures. And Vice-Principal As you look through this yearbook, now and in years to come, you will be reminded of your friends, acquain- tances and the happy times you had at Central. It also reflects the people and events that made this year an especially memorable one at Central. The increase in the size of the student body and the addition of new courses has enriched the school. The able leadership of the student organization, the dedicated help of the staff and the support of the parents has made the school year very suc- cessful. From student art work hung in the halls to championship teams we have gained a pride and satisfaction that has nourished the vitality and spirit of the school. The yearbook editors, staff and advisors are to be congratulated on producing a fine yearbook. Since they started last summer, Meg and Karen have put many hours and a great deal of work into the yearbook. Your efforts are appreciated. To the graduates, I would like to offer my thanks for your contribution during your years at Central. All my best to you in the future. This institute is the place the person who thought up the word cosmopolitan probably had in mind. The staff and students are diverse in background, dress, manner and dreams (future, that is). This makes it both a joy and a hardship to be Student ' s Council President. The individuals provide a vast variety ot talents and ideas - yet this same diversity makes it difficult to bring the student body together as a whole. Realizing this, the Student ' s Council attempted to tailor events accordingly (whatever that means). The members ot the Council worked very hard and otten overstepped, no - EXCEEDED their expected duties. They deserve a lot of credit and praise. Central achieved an excellent reputation in London in 1982-83. Help maintain this level in the future. Finally, happy perusal of this, your Yearbook. Keep passing the open windows. What do you think we ought to write? Meg: Well, we could say how much fun we had. K: Fun? Are you serious?? Why don ' t we tell them about all of the toil, sweat and anguish? M: All of the ragged fingernails, missed classes and headaches in the name of creative en- deavours? K: Right. But it WAS interesting watching the whole book come together. M: And saying which pictures get in and thinking up blackmail threats. K: There ' s something I ' ve been meaning to ask you. When do we get paid? M: Paid?? Karen, there ' s something I ' VE been meaning to tell you. We don ' t. K: We don ' t get paid??? No money? M: No. No money. K: There ' e something wrong in a world where you don ' t get paid for doing a whole year of slave labour. M: Ah yes, Karen, but it ' s 12:20 at night and I ' m supposed to be studying Functions and so we don ' t get paid. UNDERGRADS The undergrads: the most important group ot people in the school. What is an undergrad ? An undergrad is anyone in grades nine through twelve who is returning to Central to continue their education - in other words, anyone who is not graduating. These are the people that make up at least three quarters of the school ' s population and have the most influence on the activities and events that occur in the school. The undergrad years are something shared by everyone, and an experience that no one will ever forget, especially if they were spent at London Central. The 1982-83 school year at Central was as fulfilling and exciting as any previous or future year. For many of us, the first day of school was like any other. However, for a large group of people it was a brand new exciting experience: the first day of high school. As the new crop of ninth graders tried to find classrooms, meet and remember all those names and faces, and get used to the absence of recesses, the rest of the undergrads reflected on growing a year older. By October, school life was settling in and the undergrads had become their usual closeknit group. The grade elevens proved their force by winning the tug-of- war contest over every other class, in- cluding the thirteens. Successfully in- tegrated into high school life, a number of grade tens decided to give a new dimension to the words short hair . For the twelvers it was a year of partying and living it up, in preparation for the studious life of grade thirteen. For all the Central undergrads it was a year for new faces as the ex-Beck students greeted a new school, but by June everyone had suc- cessfully mingled to form an extra-special body of Central students. As the school year draws to a close, faces begin to look towards the sun of summer, but also the upcoming fall. For some, it will be the final year, when responsibilities set in and seriousness takes hold. For others it will be another year to meet people and make friends, as well as implant their feet deeper into the Central soil. And for some it will be a new experience as the first year of high school begins. Whatever the new year brings, the effects of this year will always be felt and the memories filed away in that great case of undergrad years. They can turn an otherwise boring, run-of-the- mill course into an educational adventure. They can make a terrible day seem ten times better with a compliment or toast of encouragement. Of course, during exam times, teachers can turn into the most horrible people ever imaginable - especially to the unprepared student after that seemingly endless killer exam. However, teachers, like all the rest of us, are human too. They have interests and hobbies that keep them busy after school hours, and on those warm, sunny June days they too would much rather be out in the sun. We asked the faculty for their feelings about teaching at Central, their interests and general comments. We were amazed at the results . . . . . . Central is a special school to me since it reminds me of my old high school. They say you can ' t go home again but in a way I feel I have - Mr. Pauli . . . Although this is a very busy year for Mr. Peter Shaw, he is enjoying it immensely. The variety is very stimulating. The only drawback is that I miss full-time involvement with Central students. They ' re great! ... A partial transcript of one of the English classes of the man known as Avid Jay Polly (Hairdresser): ... blah, blah, blah . . . (He is also known as Mr. Paul) . . . Other than the major heart failures, minor heart failures, and heart failures, Central students make teaching a very rewarding experience. - Mr. Cowx . . . Some en- couraging words from Mr. Reinhard: Set a goal for your life, find a way to reach it and success is inevitable. . . . And finally this from Mr. Kraemer: Mutual respect between staff and students makes Central a place where teaching and learning are enjoyable experiences. These clubs also support and add immeasurable enjoyment to our high school days. The Key Club, though only in its first year, managed to replace the school banner and enhance the stands of Carruther ' s field with the traditional purple and gold. The Computer Club has grown with the addition of a number of computers and even produced our own Shazam, alias Mr. Cowx. Many clubs which have been running over the past few years, continued suc- cessfully. The language clubs enjoyed international meals; the war games players saved the world while the science fiction club battled extraterrestrial in- vaders, and the debating club prepared for political confrontations. A special thank-you to the camera club who have managed to provide many memories for this yearbook. The clubs range from a school news magazine to Christian fellowship. A Glimpse of Something New Computer Club With the advent of the computer science courses at Central this year, the Computer Club has come out of hiding. It is an informal group headed by Mr. Computer Man Cowx and three executives. President Craig Cud- more described the club as consisting of forty to fifty regular members and about thirty odds and ends . A gleam appeared in Craig ' s eye as he said, Our cardinal rule is No eating in the computer room; we don ' t want chips in our chips! ' . Vice-president Bruce Chapman and Secretary Judy Payne fill the other two executive positions. The club gives computer club members and other students of the school time to use the computers. To be a regular member, all you have to do is show up for your scheduled time, explains Judi, who sets up the schedules. Trips to local computer fairs are hoped for this year, but the matter is being played by ear . Judi concluded with an en- couraging statement: We ' re having a great year and I hope everyone comes back! Computer Club Executive FRONT ROW: Craig Cudmore. Central ' s first Art Council got off to a busy start in the fall of 1982. The members began their activities by posting student art in the library and preparing a special display for Commencement, both of which received many compliments. The Christmas workshops on calligraphy and candle-making were both ex- tremely popular. The Council hopes to send some of Central ' s student artwork to the London Regional Art Gallery for a secondary school exhibition in the spring of 1983. Another objective of the Council is the acquisition of a permanent display area or case, for the school ' s enjoyment. The Art Council is composed of approximately fifteen hard-working members and supervised by Mr. Bice. The main idea behind the group is to make art available to those not taking an art course, and to involve both students and teachers in the various activities, says Mr. Bice. It is quite clear that the Art Council will continue to be very successful in the future years at Central. Chew The lunchtime radio station, appropriately called CHEW, Central Highschool ' s Eating Wavelength, got off to a wonderful start in the fall of 1982. A wide variety of music was played, and anyone wishing to get involved with the radio station could do so. Although CHEW was mimimally equipped, the music was loud and clear and took our minds off the coldness of the cafeteria. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the station and to our faithful listeners, said Michael Brooke, Station Manager. There is no doubt that CHEW ' s sound will become even better in years to come. Glimpse of Colour Ghostly Glimpses The year 1982-83 was an eventful one for Central ' s Music Dept. Throughout the year we managed to rehearse and perform some fascinating music while still main- taining our respective sanities. The year began on an entertaining note as witnessed by the busload of students who braved the ride to Toronto and were richly rewarded by the music and elaborate staging of the opera The Magic Flute . The period from mid October until Christmas was rapidly consumed by the tremendous effort put forth by all those music students who made our Grapefruit Campaign such a financial success. They built two mountains - one of Grapefruit, one at the bank! The winter saw a flurry of activity as we faced long hours of rehearsals in preparation for the school show, Little Mary Sunshine , and our Alumni Hall concert, Variety Is . . . The new year also brought with it a renewed enthusiasm in the school choir, which grew in mem- bership and ability. The last few months of the year flew by as one event succeeded another. The success of our Kiwanis Music Festival soloists prepared us for the highlight of the year - our senior exchange trip to Ottawa. All those who dragged themselves out of bed at ridiculously early hours for morning rehearsals, helped to make the school year one of much progress and achievement. In exhaustion we worked together and saw things through. Make a joyful noise. MUSIC Music Council FRONT ROW: Jane Whelen, June Nagai, Ayumi Bailly, Seong Sim Jung, Ann Corbet, Jenny Boyd. Ghosts Come to Life SPOR TS Another year at Central, and another set of champions! The 82-83 sports season was definitely a winning one for Central. Such outstanding teams as the Senior Boys ' Basketball received city-wide recognition when they placed first in the City Championships and displayed excellence in skill and effort. The Senior Girls ' Volleyball team won the City Championship, placed second at WOSSA, and went on to compete at OFSAA. The Junior Girls ' Volleyball team was also a winner - taking the City Championship and placing second at WOSSA. Later in the year, the Swim team proved their skill by finishing third in the London Conference Meet. Other teams were prominent at Central for other reason: with the help of the ex-Spartans, our Football and Hockey teams played respectable seasons and showed the promise of future champions. Two grade thirteen girls, Kim Hyatt and Mary Flinn, formed the Senior Girls ' Rowing team and spent early mornings skimming over the Thames. Central produced individual winners too. Debbie Whatmore, a grade thirteen student, received high honours by winning the Fran Wigston Award for her amazing basketball talent. The S.A.A. had a successful year, providing us with activities like the Monte Carlo Night Turn- about. Intramural sports attracted a great deal of people as well, especially the Student Council ' s road hockey tournament. One of the most memorable things about sports at Central is, of course, the fans. Who could forget the sky at the Red Feather Football Game - filled with the bright yellow balloons of the Ghosts? Remember the gang with their instruments cheering us on at those football and basketball games? Think of the number of times you donned your purple and gold and joined in the call Go Ghosts Go! The spirit that Central ' s fans and athletes display is the spirit that breeds champions. That spirit is the reason that, once again, Central is a winning school. It seems that everyone around is heading for the drawer and donning their Bausch and Lombs. Is there some special reason? Is it because certain Cen- trales wish to remain incognito due to their activities - such as our friend in the fig leaf? Or is it an attempt to cover up the effects of previous, or present, events? Whatever the reason, the wild wrap-arounds, total reflects, and blacked-out Ray Bans sported by the Central students certainly make them a shady bunch of characters!! i 1 ' 111 Li .
