GOLDEN GLIMPSES What do Shakespeare, Homer and yearbook com- mittee ' s have in common 7 Certainly not writing techniques that will last centuries, nor literary or ar- tistic genius to shock the world, but all of the above try to capture and hold some part of human life and make it timeless. History is timeless, but history does not have to apply to the whole world to be that way. A yearbook hopes to capture a year of one ' s life and create an image of it, so that it will never be forgotten. As this yearbook draws to a close, so does a very eventful year both at Central and throughout the world. As we arrived at school in September, we brought back memories of our romantic holidays mingled with visions of the glamourous wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. As the world fell in love with the new Princess, Central ' s Cross-Country team was running to many victories including a midget girls cross-country WOSSA champion. As September passed, October began with the tragic news of the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in Egypt. The month ended on a more cheerful note with our successful fashion show, thanks to the efforts of Paula Crofts, Traci Fontana and their talented models. On November 2, Central ' s Karen Baldwin was crowned Miss Canada 1982, which resulted in a tremendous boost in our school spirit which seemed to improve over the year. This spirit was illustrated by the first year success of our Gumbie cheerleaders who, although they didn ' t win in the Westmount cheer-off, were very popular contestants. Winter festivities started out with Musical chairs and the road hockey tournament. As the hockey teams battled it out on the road, the Senior Boys Basketball team battled it out on the court and became WOSSA AA champions. Not to be outdone, the Girls Junior and Senior Volleyball teams also competed in WOSSA. As Central had its athletic champions, so did Canada. Steve Podborski thrilled Canadians with his downhill victories which resulted in his being the World Cup Champion 1982. As the temperatures continued to fall our spirit continued to rise, as evident from our Florida Day which received city wide coverage. Spring finally arrived and the war raging in the Falkland Islands seemed very far away as we canvassed towards one of our most successful cancer campaigns ever. An event which will always be important in Canada ' s history was the signing of Canada ' s own constitution in April, 1982. At home, school politics wound up as elections drew near. Creative posters plastered the school halls and intriguing election speeches made voting decisions more difficult. Finally, the school was given another honour when Donna Lamb, president of the S.A.A, was awarded the Ernie McTavish award for the City of London. The Grade nines are glad to see their rook year over though the grads are sorry to see their high school days at Central draw to a close. They will take with them many cherished memories. Our intent for this Golden Glimpses page was not to make a calendar of the past year, but to put down on paper some of the important events which have oc- curred over the 1981-82 school year, both at Central and throughout the world, in order to give this year some meaning, some place in your memories. Twenty years from now, you may no longer remember all of these events which happened, but hopefully seeing them in print will spark your memory to recall some of this year: to recall funny incidents, good friends, to see what was important to you now. because these are the things which will have shaped you into the person you will be. If this copy of Glimpses enables you to remember something of 1981-82. instead of it just being part of your schooling, then it will have served its purpose.
