b PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE This certainly has been a year of the Golden Ghosts and in particular that of the Caesars. This is the name our graduating class of 1982 chose to call themselves. The leadership shown by the graduates this year has been outstanding and I sincerely thank them for their tremendous contributions during their years in Central. Our present grades 11 and 12 are showing every sign of developing into the future school leaders and are determined not to be outshone. Next year will be one of great challenge and opportunity. We will have many students from Sir Adam Beck Secondary School and we will grow considerably in size. I have every confidence that the vibrant school spirit of our student body, the dedicated staff and the very positive support of our community will enable us to meet the challenges with our characteristic success. The yearbook editors and staff and advisors deserve congratulations for the fine job they have done in producing this yearbook. It is a large task and it has been tackled with tremendous energy and ability. We all appreciate your efforts. The reputation of a school is determined by its graduates, students, staff and community. Central has a fine reputation across Ontario. I do not need to say more. R.L.Yates Principal VICE-PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE This year has been a year of promise for the future. For the students who are not yet graduating next year ' s course offerings will be broadened to include art, ac- counting and data processing. In addition to this the school population will be growing because this year ' s Grade 9 class was the largest in several years and next fall many students from Sir Adam Beck Secondary School will be transferring to Central. Aided by the spirit of the students, the dedication of the staff and the support of our community, Central will continue to thrive. The yearbook editors, staff and advisors are to be congratulated for their efforts in producing this yea r- book. It is a very large task involving many hours of work and the continual pressure of deadlines. Your efforts are appreciated. To the graduates, I would like to offer my thanks for your contribution during your years here. Your outstanding leadership this year has been sincerely appreciated and has established an excellent model for future classes to follow. All my best to you in the future. This Page Is Sponsored by Your Principal and Vice-Principal All my friends around me But soon this will all change Down our roads we will travel To go our own separate ways Maybe we ' ll meet again part way. Many bonds have formed here Only the strong will remain But In the back of each mind The memories will last and last Maybe to relive them later on. Our lives revolved around here For a number of years Many feelings of sorrow Will help to shed a few tears Maybe they ' re tears of joy. We can help but grow sad now For you have been part of our lives You ' ve seen us grow and wisen To lead us to a better life The future remains unknown Confronting many obstacles on our way But we won ' t let them stop us. no we won ' t ' Cause you ' ve taught us too much to let it fade away. SO YOU THOUGHT Like a voice heard but not comprehended, so you could not comprehend the wind which tossed you about, A leaf fallen from a tree . . . Driven by the wind, shaped incessantly by its power, constantly changing in every way. So you vainly channelled your energy into mastering the force which markedly shaped your life. At the same time. . . Observing, Other leaves hopelessly tossed about, each shaped in their own unique way . . . Observing, Different leaves brought together by the wind, for a mere instant of time, then, sadly parted by the wind, never to come together again . . . so you went along, knowing not the direction you would take, nor what you were searching for, The cold wind opened the book which sat upon the table, page by page . . . So when you blindly thought you had just mastered the wind, and could finally come to rest in the place the wind had carried you, A hurricane came along and, swept you away . . . Leaving you only with the memory of the hollow sound of leaves . . . scraping along the pavement. Mais, c ' est la verite. C ' est la dure verite q ' uon s ' appele la vie Mais, c ' est la vie . . . Among these triumphs we managed to reduce the hot dog surplus to zero at the annual barbecue in Gibbons Park, and our familiar grapefruit and orange campaign reached its goal of one truckload. 81-82 was a year of expansion into projects other than the traditional, such as making new uniforms for the girls of the Sr. Band and Orchestra. Composite photographing of the various senior performing groups gave the students a chance to have pictures of themselves with their instruments. Travelling was much evident on our already crowded agenda. A long haul to Toronto, accompanied by students from Beck and C.C.H was arranged in orde to see the Canadian Opera Company ' s production of Die Fleidermaus. The highlight of the year was our overnight exchange with the Kmgsville District High School. This was accompanied by a day visit to the Boblo Island Amusement Park. It was a productive and fun year in the department. Many thanks go out to all who participated in making it a success! Richard Seo, Kaarlo Koskiala, Paul Brennan, Eric Talman Despite the poor turnout for the team, the players that did play showed spirit and determination in all of the games we played in. The and 6 record does not tell of the close games against Beck and Banting, nor does it tell of the many proud moments the players as a team experienced on the field. It is only hoped that more people will try out for the team next year, and that the string of losses will sharpen a yearning for vic- tory. As for this year ' s team, we can be proud in saying that we did the best we could under the circumstances, and that is all anyone could have asked for. In closing, I can safely say this season has meant more in terms of fond memories gained, then in games lost. Best wishes to the Senior Football Ghosts of ' 82. The 1981-82 Senior Boys Basketball team had a very suc- cessful season, surprising all of their critics. The combination of an improving front line, experienced guards and excellent coaching enabled the Senior Ghosts to compile a 28-13 won-loss record, including a 9-3 record in a very tough Western Division. Among the team ' s accomplishments this year were winning the consolation championships at the Brock University tournament and the Athlete ' s Foot tournament in Sarnia. The highlight of the year was a four game sketch in which the team won the W.O.S.S.A. A. A. championship, giving Mr. Peterson his first W.O.S.S.A. title in 17 years of coaching and qualifying the Ghosts for the All-Ontario championships. The team made it to the quarter-finals of the All-Ontario cham- pionships before being eliminated. The team would like to thank the many loyal fans for their incredible support throughout the season, and the six John Makaran Co-Captain graduating player ' s wish next year ' s team as much success as had in this season, and more! ! Steve Hanson Naeem Merchant (Co-Captains) JUNIOR BOYS ' VOLLEYBALL Central ' s Junior Boys ' Volleyball team performed relatively well this year. We finished the season with a 6 and 8 record. Inconsistency was one of our biggest problems. We had only two players from the previous year on the team. By next year some of the new talent will be developed and the team looks forward to a prosperous season. A special thanks to Mr. Wood for putting up with all of us. Allen Newman SENIOR BADMINTON TEAM The Senior Badminton team had a very successful season. The ' A ' team placed third in the West division allowing our girls and boys singles, girls doubles and mixed doubles to play at Conference. Al Farquhar placed third at Conference and fourth at WOSSA. Jane Vincent and Naeem Merchant placed second at Conference and third at WOSSA. The ' B ' team had a good season with the boys singles and doubles making it to Conference. The Junior team had Carrie Portis taking second in girls singles at WOSSA. Our thanks go to Mr. Pauli and Mr. Blosdale for their time and coaching which made this season such a success. A special thanks also goes to Craig Evans, a student at U.W.O. who volunteered his time to help coach us. Bank of Montreal can call itself The First Canadian Bank because when we opened our doors for business in 1817, we were the only Canadian bank for all of Canada. But we take the word first to mean far more these days. It means being first with innovative consumer services. First with good advice about savings, investments, mortgages and budgeting. And of course, first in all ways for all the customers who have made us the bank we are today. Drop into your nearest Bank of Montreal branch and get to know the people inside. LE CHATEAU GOLDEN GLIMPSES What do Shakespeare, Homer and yearbook com- mittee ' s have in common 7 Certainly not writing techniques that will last centuries, nor literary or ar- tistic genius to shock the world, but all of the above try to capture and hold some part of human life and make it timeless. History is timeless, but history does not have to apply to the whole world to be that way. A yearbook hopes to capture a year of one ' s life and create an image of it, so that it will never be forgotten. As this yearbook draws to a close, so does a very eventful year both at Central and throughout the world. As we arrived at school in September, we brought back memories of our romantic holidays mingled with visions of the glamourous wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. As the world fell in love with the new Princess, Central ' s Cross-Country team was running to many victories including a midget girls cross-country WOSSA champion. As September passed, October began with the tragic news of the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in Egypt. The month ended on a more cheerful note with our successful fashion show, thanks to the efforts of Paula Crofts, Traci Fontana and their talented models. On November 2, Central ' s Karen Baldwin was crowned Miss Canada 1982, which resulted in a tremendous boost in our school spirit which seemed to improve over the year. This spirit was illustrated by the first year success of our Gumbie cheerleaders who, although they didn ' t win in the Westmount cheer-off, were very popular contestants. Winter festivities started out with Musical chairs and the road hockey tournament. As the hockey teams battled it out on the road, the Senior Boys Basketball team battled it out on the court and became WOSSA AA champions. Not to be outdone, the Girls Junior and Senior Volleyball teams also competed in WOSSA. As Central had its athletic champions, so did Canada. Steve Podborski thrilled Canadians with his downhill victories which resulted in his being the World Cup Champion 1982. As the temperatures continued to fall our spirit continued to rise, as evident from our Florida Day which received city wide coverage. Spring finally arrived and the war raging in the Falkland Islands seemed very far away as we canvassed towards one of our most successful cancer campaigns ever. An event which will always be important in Canada ' s history was the signing of Canada ' s own constitution in April, 1982. At home, school politics wound up as elections drew near. Creative posters plastered the school halls and intriguing election speeches made voting decisions more difficult. Finally, the school was given another honour when Donna Lamb, president of the S.A.A, was awarded the Ernie McTavish award for the City of London. The Grade nines are glad to see their rook year over though the grads are sorry to see their high school days at Central draw to a close. They will take with them many cherished memories. Our intent for this Golden Glimpses page was not to make a calendar of the past year, but to put down on paper some of the important events which have oc- curred over the 1981-82 school year, both at Central and throughout the world, in order to give this year some meaning, some place in your memories. Twenty years from now, you may no longer remember all of these events which happened, but hopefully seeing them in print will spark your memory to recall some of this year: to recall funny incidents, good friends, to see what was important to you now. because these are the things which will have shaped you into the person you will be. If this copy of Glimpses enables you to remember something of 1981-82. instead of it just being part of your schooling, then it will have served its purpose.
