GOLDEN GLIMPSES; the year past What will we remember about this year when it becomes history? We may have thoughttui moments in the future when occupied with trying to gather a few memories of )ust who we were in 1980-81. What will stand out in mind depends a lot on our present interests and concerns. We will have only our personal history of experience to tell us what life meant, and how we lived it. History like the textbook stuff has little impact unless we can somewhat react to it. Random notes about world happenings have much more force when we can say, Hey! I remember that. That ' s part of me! A look at this year purports much history has been in the making. Yes, a lot happened. It was the year of the heavily boycotted Moscow Olympics, snubbed in an effort to bring the message of protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to the citizens of the USSR. In sharp contrast to this unfortunate mixture of sport and politics, we witnessed the selfless heroism of a man working in an effort to put an end to suf- fering: Terry Fox and his H arathon of Hope. Inspiring millions, |ylr. Fox ran a marathon a day, raising money to fund research of cancer, a disease which cost Terry his life. It was also a year of despair. We were shocked by the news of the murder of John Lennon, a man who had brought a new fact to both the music industry and the imagination of the world. We were horrified by the T.V. coverage of an attempt on American President Reagan ' s life, which was broadcast amid rumours that he was very near death. A similiar chill was felt with the shooting of Pope John Paul, who also recovered after a lengthy hospital stay. Are we affected by such violence, or are we jaded into acceptance by the increasingly regular patterns it takes? Even the media attracts us with the morbid. In the States, 78 million people watched T.V. ' s Dallas to Find out who shot J.R. What one classes as an entertainment another calls trash. As reality gets less rosy, fantasy loses nobility. As they say, you don ' t have to watch it if it bothers you. Other world happ enings like the release of the 53 American hostages from Iran, the death of the first IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, and the earthquake in Italy are significant, but very remote. To wrap up our reminiscences, we should go home. Things we can all relate to, such as the LTC bus strike just after we paid $18 for a new City pass, come to mind. And how about the big fire at the YMCA on Wellington? Or the day that the Russian Junior figureskating persons visited our school? How about the Silver Broom (that ' s Curling, remember?). These are events which are likely to be emotionally tagged to other details that will become framed images of ourselves in time. It ' s important to use this reflection constructively. It tells you who you have been, and what you dreamed of being, but as yet are not. This book is designed for that purpose. Ac- ceptance of what has been and the responsibility of growing and living in greater challenge, complexity, and independence is part of the process of becoming mature. At left, we see Centralite Ann Koziol on her year ' s leave of absence from the Canadian school system. As a Rotary Ex- change student, Ann was given the unique opportunity of living with a host family while attending school overseas. Also participating this year from Central was Chris Aldred.
