,L1-EN COUNTY PUPLIC ,yRRAB, 3 1833 03735 5036 Gc 971.302 L84Lta ,1981 GOLDEN GLIMPSES CENTRAL COMMAND REMARKS This excellent yearbook is due to the very devoted efforts of the editors Barbara Schust and Michael Curtis assisted by Mr. Chisholm, the staff advisor. Preparing a yearbook is a con- siderable amount of work and this is not always recognized. A yearbook is of increasing value as the years pass; it brings very many happy and pleasant memories of old friends and acquaintances. Central is a fine school thanks in no small measure to the excellence and the contribution of its very active students and staff. This book will help you to remember your part in it. To all the graduates, I would like to offer my sincere thanks for all your efforts in your years in the school. May good for- tune attend all of your future endeavours. Congratulations to the yearbook editors Barb Schust and Mike Curtis and the yearbook staff for producing an excellent yearbook. You have the satisfaction that, in years to come, the appreciation for your efforts will grow. As you leaf through the pages of this yearbook you can see that the students and staff have a very active extracurricular program of athletics, clubs and music. It is gratifying to see the curricular effort of the students in balanced by a high rate of participation in extracurricular activities. To the graduates, I extend my thanks for your contribution to Central during your years here. Your involvement and attitude has enriched the school. May it bring you success and happiness in the future. R.L. Yates Principal A.O. Laine Vice-Principal  0 ' - - r T ' M This year at Central will be one I will remember fondly as I hope all of you will. The Student Council was much more in touch with students this year and hence such programs as the Stereo Unit in the Cafeteria, Florida Day, a Road Hockey Tournament and a highly successful Rook Week were made possible. Central students acted reponsibly this year in not succumbing to the disruptive school riots early in the term. I hope Central served you well this past year and I wish everyone well in the year ahead. Chris Delaney Council President This was a very successful year, both from the standpoint of the Student Council, and from that of the students. We, the Student Council, feel you can never work too hard for causes which are of benefit to the school. I would personally like to thank all the students who supported our fundraising and special events. As well, I want to express my appreciation to our staff advisor, Mr. Koenen (for what would we do without him?) and all the staff who helped with our activities and chaperoned our dances. Thank you for a good year, and I wish you all good luck in the future. In his two years at Central, he has run the Choir along with Mrs. Simonsen. If not a teacher, Mr. Abel hints that he ' d probably be retired. Richard Bubbles Blosdale is an agitated individual who indentifies, nevertheless, with Loni Anderson. A 24 year-old at heart, he would be an engineer if not a teacher. This is a year of homecoming for Dick, who attended Central as a student. Welcome back! Colin Chick Chisholm is one veteran yearbook staff advisor who is relieved that his involvement in this capacity ends this year. Mr. Chisholm will have more time to pursue his outside interests, which include bowling, cigars, and American football. Charlie Cunningham is an en- tertainingly shrewd, demanding Head of Moderns. It seems that his no-nonsense approach works when he ' s coaching Football as well, as evidenced by the relative success of the Juniorteam. Barbara Dalrymple, in her 5th year at Central, is known for her frequent cry of Stop talking and start typing! Mrs. Dalrymple is perturbed by students who don ' t have their own typing paper. No wonder her secret ambition is to retire! A person of electric construct is Mr. Demaray, guru of the Resource Centre. In this, his second year here, Mr. D has organized the Rock Hound Club. He and his dedicated troupe have explored and collected, and maintain several mineral displays for the neophyte majority. Mr. Fryday is unfortunately leaving after one year at Central in which he contributed his skills and personality as both a teacher and staff advisor for the Hockey team, and Christian Fellowship Club. We wish him further success as he assumes the position of Depart- ment Head of Geography at Laurier. Mr. Gawley, in his initial and final year here, captivated his classes with his wit and use of practical examp les, ie. students, to enlighten his charges. His contribution to the athletic scene was made as Bad- minton coach. His untimely leaving is lamentable. Katherine Kit-Kat Hanna is 19 going on 16. If not a teacher, Mrs. Hanna would be a doctor, perhaps with help from the kind of students that come to class in full surgical dress to dissect their foetal pigs. Her favourite late excuse is, Well, I slept in, but did you have a good holiday, Mrs. Hanna? Harry Homer is a cheerful 12-year veteran of Central, where he satisfies his ambition to become a dogcatcher. His favourite late ex- cuse is, the train had a flat tire. He plans to live to be ninety, when he ' ll be shot by a jealous husband. Phys. Ed. Head Miss Innes keeps busy coaching Junior and Senior Volleyball, Junior Basketball, and Track. She also acts, along with Mrs. Rehorn, as staff advisor to the S.A.A. Miss Innes is both respected and admired by students whose trust she has easily gained. Mrs. Janitis has spent her two and one-half years here in a variety of unusual pursuits. These include winning a basketball shortly before her daughter was born, working on a vaccine to cure run-on sentences, and handling the Debating and Science Fiction Clubs. Mr. Koenen, in his first year at Central, was Waterpolo coach and Staff advisor to the Student Council when not teaching History classes. His photo appears in a candid shot at the end of this section. NO PHOTO AVAILABLE Joe Teacher of the Year Kraemer taught Chemistry and coached our successful Curling teams this year. Interested in the administrative aspects of education, Mr. Kraemer was ac- claimed a trustee in the Separate School Board. Peter Lawson lends humour in providing practical information on technically-related career op- portunities, as well as the certain know-how of experience in his teaching of Industrial Arts. Mr. Lawson is also interested in Cross- country Skiing, as evidenced by his invention of all-weather skis. Mr. Leach has long served Central through his teaching of Industrial Arts and his work in Guidance, where he has demon- strated profound care for the school and its students. This sincere in- volvement with the school is commendable in him and others who act in a similar capacity. Dale Manias, aka the Man, divulges that he enjoys turkey stuffed with lasagna while coaching soccer and math competitors. The Man usually feels like an immature Kirk Douglas. His secret ambition is to play goal for Les Canadiens. Uncle Sandy McLachlin is a positive and optimistic man who survived being trampled by a horse, with his sense of humour and desire to be a horse and sheep farmer intact. We all have problems like that sometimes. Michael Nails Nobes nas managed to maintain his Keen, Incisive, Academic state of mind through two years here, despite the fact that his students are his pet peeves and most comical memories in retrospect. Nails identifies with Robert Redford, for whom, in his own opinion, he ' s often mistaken. Unless you take Francais or belong to the French Club, you probably aren ' t familiar with Mrs. O ' Leary. Now that you know who she is, make her feel at home when you see her. You don ' t have to wonder any longer . . . Helen O ' Reilly was busy in this, her first year here, as a Moderns teacher. She offers her classes the rare chance to choose new, albeit French of Spanish pseudonyms. She is known for her all-too-often ironic remark, Ce n ' est pas difficile, EH? NO PHOTO AVAILABLE Mr. Oswick spent this, his final year at Central, teaching English and helping out in Track and Field, Football, and Guidance. It is certain that he ' ll be missed, as he leaves people whose lives he has enriched through his intellect and his easy- going nature. Alan George Pauli is Old enough to know better, but he would still like to acquaint himself with Olivia Newton-John. Mr. Pauli is frequently found wandering the halls asking, Which way to the beach? where he consumes pizza and Chateau-briande. This is Big Al ' s first year here, but he ' d already rather be in oil - or Grease! Herb Peterson doesn ' t like failure, but what really irks him is potential wasted from a lack of effort. Success can reward ex- cellence, but it is more specifically indicative of a potential realized as a result of work. Perhaps it ' s this understanding that makes a good Phys. Ed. teacher, and personal motivator. Stew Potts is Central ' s resident bandmaster, but he really wants to be a new wave sensation. He wishes to escape from the sordid world of teaching, where he gets excuses instead of work. He feels 75, yet is able to identify with Bo Derek. Weird! Mrs. Rehorn, the Assistant Head of Moderns, also serves Central through her work with the S.A.A. and Spanish Club. Known for her quickly-moving classes which demand involvement and attention, she succeeds, through the respect she commands, at being a just and well-appreciated person. George Reintjes is another busy Phys. Ed. teacher, as a Senior Football, Midget Basketball and Track and Field coach, yet still had time to teach Math as well this year. This dedication to the school rubs off on his charges, whose spirit is impressive even when the scoreboard result is not. Bruce Richardson, as our String Music teacher, plays second fiddle to no one. It ' s easy to draw parallels between him and the Pied Piper of Hamelin, with his annual bagpipe tour through the halls, amid the din of curious students who flock to his side, demanding tunes of Pink Floyd. Family Studies at Central is synonymous with Mrs. Ritenburg. She volunteers her skill to the Home Ec. (sorry, Family Studies) Club, the Grad Committee, and Cheer- leaders. T Miss Rowe, a Physical Ed. teacher, coaches Senior Basketball, Junior Volleyball, and Track and Field on the side. Athletes never die; they just get sent to the locker room before the end of the game. Mr. Ryan, Assistant Head of Science, contributed to the ex- tracurricular scene as the Tennis coach, and staff advisor to the Camera Club. His humour is a quality which permits peace of mind in dealing with material that otherwise would tend to cause anxiety. James Scott, an inspired showman of the school, teaches English and Theatre Arts with some of the dramatic flair of the Bard himself. The results are salient in the fine school productions put on by the Senior Theatre students, often with help from the Music Dept. Peter Shaw is gifted with the ability to explain things in a prac- tical and relevant manner. An expert in Energy as it affects society, he will be on a year of absence at the University coor- dinating course study of this field. Mr. Slade, Guidance Head, is the man responsible for the organization of the interviews and c areer information services provided through his Dept. He works to make Guidance in this school helpful and approachable. Mrs. Sullivan, as our German teacher, also manages the German Club, which provides opportunities for members to gain the practical experience afforded by such ac- tivities as games, films, and speeches. Mr. Watson, a French teacher who coaches the Soccer B team and runs the War Games Club, is also known for his Library Patrol duty. This year he and Mr. Chisholm competed to see who could expel more students from the Resource Centre. Ken West infuses Central with some R.A.F. precision as English Head, and Swim Team Coach. His personality is enriched by the wealth of his noble, proud heritage, as he is endowed with the spirit of positive thinking. Eric Wood is often mistaken for a Math teacher, when in reality, he is a stand-up comedian. He drags interest from his charges through the application of his Extremely Sublte wit. He confesses his secret ambition is to become a writer. I wonder if Woody Allen started this way? NTERMEDIATE BAND 4 -■ ir i FOOTBALL Looking back at the 1980-81 Central Senior Football team, one can see from the record, (0-6), that our goals and ex- pectations were not achieved. The Central spirit, however, was always evident, week after week. We lost close games to Catholic Central and Saunders, which proved our team to be a feared contender in London Conference Football. Special thanks go to Mr. Oswick, and Jack Davis, for their important contributions to the team. Very special thanks go to Mr. Reintjes for his excellent coaching and his unceasingly op- timistic attitude, which inevitably rubbed off on the team. We would also like to thank the fans for their support, week after week. On behalf of the captains and graduating players. Good luck Ghosts in the 1981-82 season! John G. Vouvalidis, Angelo Currado, Andy Portis, and Mervyn Budd: Captains. Andy Dollar and Alan Dinniwell Assistant Captains. The 1980 Junior Football squad had little experienced talent. We were able, however, to overcome this major ob- stacle, and against odds, won our first two contests. The highlight of the season was defeating arch-rival Catholic Central 28-14 in an offense-packed, highly intensity game. Unfortunately, the Ghosts suffered key player injuries, and the free-wheeling offense was stifled by strong defences from more experienced teams. We would all like to thank Mr. Cunningham and Doug Gunton for the time and support they contributed to help make the 1980 Junior Ghosts a success. Good luck to next year ' s team! John Reese and Dougald McKillop BASKETBALL The Senior Girls Basketball team had an excellent season in 1980-81. We earned the right to play in the Purple and White tournament. Central also won the Saunders Consolation Trophy with a decisive victory over C.C.H. The Team made it to the London Conference semifinals, where we lost an extremely close game to the Crusaders. Thanks go to Miss Rowe for her patience, and her ability to coach us to our greatest potential. Watch out for this team next year! Alison Aldcroft Senior Basketball 1980-81 Ghosts Darrin Ullerick Kevin Eck Naeem Merchant Steven Hanson Scott Whatmore Robert Schuetz Chris Cuylle John Vouvalidis Sandy Schomburg Mark McManus Alfred Banholzer Mike Heiland Eric Rowe David Scheutz Team Record (15-11) This year proved to be one of Central ' s better years for Junior Basketball. After getting off to a slow start, the team ended up with a 9-3 record and a berth in the playoffs for the City Championship. In the playoffs, we won our way to the semifinals, but were then defeated by a stronger team from Catholic Central. Winning a tournament in Petrolia was another highlight of our season. The entire team would like to thank Mr. Peterson. His leadership and coaching talents were essential factors contributing to our success. Alistair Linton Although the Midget Boys Basketball team did not have a very successful 1980-81 season, we gained valuable experience. We seemed to be lacking height. Thanks for the fine coaching, Mr, Reintjes! Tal Leyshon VOLLEYBALL 4i i This year ' s Senior Girls Volleyball team exhibited a great amount of talent and spirit. With each game, they improved. They went to the Finals of the Laurier Tournament and to the Semifinals of Conference. There is obviously a bright future for this young team. The players would like to thank Mom (Miss Innes) and Miss McDonald for their excellent coaching and continuous support. Donna Lamb The Junior Boys Volleyball team enjoyed a very pleasant 1980-81 season. Though we had a slow start, we finished very strongly by winning 4 out of our last 5 games, and losing to the City Champs by only two points. A hearty thanks to Mr. Wood, who was a great coach. A warm thanks also to Miss McDonald. y This year Central ' s Senior Boys Volleyball Team faced the inevitable chore of rebuilding. Our record was 9-7, paced by strong spiker Dave Schuetz. With the return of several veterans and some bright and upcoming rookies, next year looks more promising. Naeem Merchant Gord Paddock After last year ' s extremely successful season, the 1980-81 Junior Girls Volleyball team was expected to defend the title of City Champions. We managed to finish third in our division behind South and C.C.H. and played in Conference. We played exceptionally well, and, as a result, we finished first in our pool. After running over Oakridge in the semifinals in two straight games, we faced the hungry South Lions, though we ended up in second place and qualified for W.O.S.S.A. We were not victorious at W.O.S.S.A., but I think it was a very good learning experience for both our coach and all of the girls on the team. A lot of thanks and appreciation go to Miss Rowe for a very en- joyable year. I ' d also like to thank our scorekeeper, Jackie Wilken, and all of the Central students who gave us encouragement and team support. Hopefully, the Junior Girls Volleyball team will do just as well next year. Captain, Monika Long SWIMMING The Swimming Team had a successful season, achieving third overall in the London Regional Swim Meet held at H.B. Beal Secondary School in February. These results may be attributed to the devotion and regular practice of the team members, and the coaching skills of John Dawdy and John Waring. Mr. West HOCKEY In retrospect, the 1980-81 Hockey Season was a success. Although the team ' s 0-17-0 record did not reflect this success, it was a season of building both character and team members. With only 3 returning from the 1979-80 season, our skaters were made up of 4 players from Thames, two of whom made up our goaltending squad, one from Simcoe, and the remainder of the team, rookies new to the school. It was a year that many of us will never forget. On behalf of the team, we would like to extend special thanks to Mr. Brian Angel (our Coach, from Saunders) and Mr. Wilf Fryday (our manager, from Central) for their ongoing support and the confidence which they gave the team throughout the season. P iJ.J4ilUaB| a=a=aza:3iia • ■■J- Ay.y- GOLDEN GLIMPSES; the year past What will we remember about this year when it becomes history? We may have thoughttui moments in the future when occupied with trying to gather a few memories of )ust who we were in 1980-81. What will stand out in mind depends a lot on our present interests and concerns. We will have only our personal history of experience to tell us what life meant, and how we lived it. History like the textbook stuff has little impact unless we can somewhat react to it. Random notes about world happenings have much more force when we can say, Hey! I remember that. That ' s part of me! A look at this year purports much history has been in the making. Yes, a lot happened. It was the year of the heavily boycotted Moscow Olympics, snubbed in an effort to bring the message of protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to the citizens of the USSR. In sharp contrast to this unfortunate mixture of sport and politics, we witnessed the selfless heroism of a man working in an effort to put an end to suf- fering: Terry Fox and his H arathon of Hope. Inspiring millions, |ylr. Fox ran a marathon a day, raising money to fund research of cancer, a disease which cost Terry his life. It was also a year of despair. We were shocked by the news of the murder of John Lennon, a man who had brought a new fact to both the music industry and the imagination of the world. We were horrified by the T.V. coverage of an attempt on American President Reagan ' s life, which was broadcast amid rumours that he was very near death. A similiar chill was felt with the shooting of Pope John Paul, who also recovered after a lengthy hospital stay. Are we affected by such violence, or are we jaded into acceptance by the increasingly regular patterns it takes? Even the media attracts us with the morbid. In the States, 78 million people watched T.V. ' s Dallas to Find out who shot J.R. What one classes as an entertainment another calls trash. As reality gets less rosy, fantasy loses nobility. As they say, you don ' t have to watch it if it bothers you. Other world happ enings like the release of the 53 American hostages from Iran, the death of the first IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, and the earthquake in Italy are significant, but very remote. To wrap up our reminiscences, we should go home. Things we can all relate to, such as the LTC bus strike just after we paid $18 for a new City pass, come to mind. And how about the big fire at the YMCA on Wellington? Or the day that the Russian Junior figureskating persons visited our school? How about the Silver Broom (that ' s Curling, remember?). These are events which are likely to be emotionally tagged to other details that will become framed images of ourselves in time. It ' s important to use this reflection constructively. It tells you who you have been, and what you dreamed of being, but as yet are not. This book is designed for that purpose. Ac- ceptance of what has been and the responsibility of growing and living in greater challenge, complexity, and independence is part of the process of becoming mature. At left, we see Centralite Ann Koziol on her year ' s leave of absence from the Canadian school system. As a Rotary Ex- change student, Ann was given the unique opportunity of living with a host family while attending school overseas. Also participating this year from Central was Chris Aldred. Above, we have the Soccer A Team in action. For further details, please see Mr. Manias. Pub ished by Josten ' s Nalional School Services Ltd. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
