Page 11 Dr. lssac Alexander, founder of Alexander Institute at Kilgore, Texas, in 1873, was born in Virginia on luly 24, 1835. He was a student at Henry and Emory College at Abington, Virginia, where he graduated in 1854 with his M.A. degree. That same year he came to Texas to be- gin his life as a minister and edu- cator. He preached for several years, and in 1873 founded Alexander ln- stitute. ln 1875 he gave the school to the East Texas Conference, and he became its first president, which position he held for eighteen years. ln 1893 he moved to Henderson, where he taught a private school for four years. Dr. Alexander then en- tered the itinerate pastorate, remain- ing until 1908, when he super- annuated. He became chaplain for the Agricultural andz Mechanical College of Texas in 1911. On lune 5, 1919, this great rnan passed away. -3 Rev. R. A. Cl..onD Morris, endower of Lon Morris College, was born near Marshall, Texas, on December 30, 1848. His first business enterprise was that of a grocery store, and several years later he opened one of the first private banks in the State of Texas. For several years he was a local preacher in the Methodist Church, and erected the church at Pittsburg, Texas, with his own means. He gave hundreds of thou- sands of dollars to the various interests of the Methodist Church. ln 1924, when he endowed Alexander College, following the wish of Dr. Alexander, his name was given to the school. Other gifts to the college were made after the original endow-- ment. Among them was the boys' dormitory which bears the name of his wife. He was probably the most philanthropic wealthy man in Texas, and this friend of Christian edu- cation passed away on Ianuary 6, 1931, in Iacksonville, Texas.
