On December first of thirty-nine Custodian duties became my line. Variety being the spice of life Was rampant there in duties rife. The old push broom, dust cloth, and mop Were in daily use lest I be a flop. Washing woodwork and windows came in for their share After flying Old Glory aloft in the air. Repairing doors, locks, and windows, Putting in a new pane To guard against colds, thieves, draught, and rain. With few racks and hammer made both shoes the same. No maintenance man then on whose shouldersto sob Repairs must be made and it fell my job. Many years passed by, and then as you know Manuel Garcia, he entered the show. Repairs are now his, with duties galore, And I was relieved of many a chore. 'Twas a duty and pleasure to do what I could To help keep folks happy, healthy, and good. From seventh grade to senior year I met many a boy and girl. To learn their names and remember all My brain is all awhirl. In later years, perchance I meet A senior I should know Who by his name I would like to greet, But memory serves me slow. The face is so familiar, But the name I do not know And all I can think to say Is- Hi there, kiddo! And now unto the Annual Staff Accept my thanks galore, For the honor you've accorded me, In the Annual of fifty-four. To the faculty and students I now will say adieu With a timely admonition To God and self be true. Your old friend, BILL

u PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE With outside pressures such as we have had the past few years influencing school life, especially the war in Korea, it is with a great deal .of pleasure that we notice a more wholesome attitude towards school this year on the part of the students. We do not hear the students talk and worry about life in the various services, which branch to select, nor notice the pes- simistic attitude so many showed the last few years. Instead, we see more interest in school and more in- terest in making plans for the future. This is a very healthy situation and one that we hope to improve on even more. I believe that the adding of the work experience program to our curriculum has been one factor in giving the student a more objective point of view. On the pages of LA PURISIMA are shown many of the school's activities outside the classroom, and it is sincerely hoped that these activities add their part to a broader and more complete education for better citizenship. H. M. Hellekson SUPERINTENDL. WS MESSAGE Each year there comes a time when we lo hai on past accomplishments and then turn forwar A-QQ contemplate hopes, ambitions, and dreams of the fu- ture. In the 1954 LA PURISIMA, the achievements and activities of the students of Lompoc Union High School for the past year have been recorded for pos- terity. This is a splendid record excellently portrayed in a well-edited annual. In behalf of the Trustees and the Administration of the high school district, I am pleased to take this opportunity to congratulate the student body for their sincere endeavor in being good and substantial citi- zens, for the whole-hearted participation in the many school activities, for their excellent record of worthy accomplishment, and for their manifest desire to ben- C'fit frOm the opportunities of free public education. It is ia privilege for me to be associated with Lompoc High School and to be given this opportunity to ex- press my appreciation to the annual staff for the praise-worthy effort and note-worthy result - the 1954 LA PURISIMA.
