WILLIAM SMILEY maxi A Elffiq' On December first of thirty-nine Custodian duties became my line. Variety being the spice of life Was rampant there in duties rife. The old push broom, dust cloth, and mop Were in daily use lest I be a flop. Washing woodwork and windows came in for their share After flying Old Glory aloft in the air. Repairing doors, locks, and windows, Putting in a new pane To guard against colds, thieves, draught, and rain. With few racks and hammer made both shoes the same. No maintenance man then on whose shouldersto sob Repairs must be made and it fell my job. Many years passed by, and then as you know Manuel Garcia, he entered the show. Repairs are now his, with duties galore, And I was relieved of many a chore. 'Twas a duty and pleasure to do what I could To help keep folks happy, healthy, and good. From seventh grade to senior year I met many a boy and girl. To learn their names and remember all My brain is all awhirl. In later years, perchance I meet A senior I should know Who by his name I would like to greet, But memory serves me slow. The face is so familiar, But the name I do not know And all I can think to say Is- Hi there, kiddo! And now unto the Annual Staff Accept my thanks galore, For the honor you've accorded me, In the Annual of fifty-four. To the faculty and students I now will say adieu With a timely admonition To God and self be true. Your old friend, BILL an C 'sd C N FN -f L fwkif FNENIINKSA WOW u PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE With outside pressures such as we have had the past few years influencing school life, especially the war in Korea, it is with a great deal .of pleasure that we notice a more wholesome attitude towards school this year on the part of the students. We do not hear the students talk and worry about life in the various services, which branch to select, nor notice the pes- simistic attitude so many showed the last few years. Instead, we see more interest in school and more in- terest in making plans for the future. This is a very healthy situation and one that we hope to improve on even more. I believe that the adding of the work experience program to our curriculum has been one factor in giving the student a more objective point of view. On the pages of LA PURISIMA are shown many of the school's activities outside the classroom, and it is sincerely hoped that these activities add their part to a broader and more complete education for better citizenship. H. M. Hellekson SUPERINTENDL. WS MESSAGE Each year there comes a time when we lo hai on past accomplishments and then turn forwar A-QQ contemplate hopes, ambitions, and dreams of the fu- ture. In the 1954 LA PURISIMA, the achievements and activities of the students of Lompoc Union High School for the past year have been recorded for pos- terity. This is a splendid record excellently portrayed in a well-edited annual. In behalf of the Trustees and the Administration of the high school district, I am pleased to take this opportunity to congratulate the student body for their sincere endeavor in being good and substantial citi- zens, for the whole-hearted participation in the many school activities, for their excellent record of worthy accomplishment, and for their manifest desire to ben- C'fit frOm the opportunities of free public education. It is ia privilege for me to be associated with Lompoc High School and to be given this opportunity to ex- press my appreciation to the annual staff for the praise-worthy effort and note-worthy result - the 1954 LA PURISIMA. Robert E. Lantz k 54 l P I C1 BOARD OF TRUSTEES CL-RD: M. McCabe, B. Sudden, H. Collier, L. Huyck, E. Larsen The function of the Board of Trustees is to make the poli- cies for the Lompoc Schools. On a non-pay basis, these people devote one night a week to this purpose. PRICE SENIOR DIARY FRESHMAN YEAR: The Senior Class of 1954, starting off its first year as a member of the high school student body, was boisterously initiated by the Sophomore Class when they cleaned the Following this the Fresh had a wiener roast at Santa Rosa Park. In November the Sophs gave a party for us at Miguelito Canyon. Later on in the year the Class Assembly was held. Many members of the class con- tributed their time and effort. Class sponsors assisting the group this year were Mrs. Beavers, Mr. Belanger, and Mr. Smith. SOPHOMORE YEAR: Many new faces appeared on campus who were members of this class. Class officers were elected with Francis Beattie as President for the first semester. The Class Assem- bly was presented early in December with many acts providing excellent entertainment. The Sophomotes were very active in sports and ended a successful year by winning the inter-class track meet by a wide margin of points. JUNOR YEAR: The Junior Class, in an activity-filled year, started off by sponsoring the Football Homecoming Dance. Following this in january, the Class Assembly took place in the form of a Minstrel Show. Complete with the black-faced minstrels, interlocutor, show boat and all, the cast realized much success in their venture. In addition to an afternoon performance for the student body, an evening show was given as part of the 4-H March of Dimes Talent Show. Highlight of the year was the presentation of the junior Play in March, You Can't Take It With You. Directed by class sponsor, Mr. Ton, the play, cast, and audience alike became a much-discussed topic of conversation when, due to power failure in the city, the show went on opening night with the capable assistance of the local fire depart- ment and its power generators. That same month on March 6, the Relay Queen, Eleanor Escarzega, was crowned at the Letterman's Spring Ball. The Queen, who was then a junior, presided over the track meet activities. Closing out the year was the junior Senior Prom. The theme was Top Hat and offered an opportunity for many of us to display our talents in the art of decorations. Sponsors Miss Banick, Mr. Krause, and Mr. Ton helped to make our junior year a year to remember. SENIOR YEAR: Class officers were elected in a meeting at the beginning of the school year. jack Hodges was our first president and sponsors set for the year were Mrs. Carlton, Mr. Guengerich, and Mr. Price. We started off outlast year's activities with Denise Lundberg being crowned Home- coming Queen. Her attendant from the Senior Class was Beverly Eckert. There were many Senior boys playing their final season with varsity teams. Next came the Senior Play, Take Care Of My Little Girl . It was a comedy about college life and was well-received when it played November 19 and 20. The new school Superintendent, Dr. Lantz, offered the Seniors an idea for approval in the form of a two-week trip to be taken in May. Full of ambition the class raised nearly one thousand five hundred dollars by March 1, thanks to the boundless generosity of the local merchants and citizens of Lompoc. With the end of the year came the Junior-Senior Prom at which we were honored guests. Baccalaureate and the graduation excerise drew to a close out high school days. They showed their school spirit through student participation at the concessions during the Harvard Football Game and one basketball game. Not only was this profit- able, but it was enjoyable as well. With the arrival of our Junior Class sweaters and rings, we were a bright spot on the high-school campus. - Class spirit was again displayed during our Junior Class Assembly, and through- out the play The Perfect Idiot, which was a great success and well accepted. The Juniors were greatly honored at the Homecoming Activities in that Gloria Sousa, Sharon Canfield, and Judy Stokes were chosen members of the Homecoming Queen's Court. The decorations for the Junior Prom revolved around our theme, and they were outstanding. Those who attended spent a delightful evening and left with the feeling that the Junior Class had presented a job well done. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, Mrs. V, Beavers, Mrs. K. Griffith, and Mr. F. Krause for their leadership and guidance, and their will- ingness to help the Junior Class. TOP ROW ll.-RJ : D. Crawford, R. Casey, T. Tucker, R. Hansen, M. Hearne, j. Swan M. Hayes, T. Grossi. At the beginning of the year we had our first class meeting at which officers for the first semester were elected. It was also decided that we give the Freshman Class a party and the dare was set for some time in October. lt proved to be a successful party. Everyone had lots of fun dancing and playing games. Our Sophomore Class also had a large turnout in football, basketball, track, and base- ball, many of whom made their letters. In May our class presented the Student Body with an assembly. Everyone worked hard, and it was a huge success. We also had the concessions at various activities and this added to our class fund. Now we are anxiously awaiting our junior year which will bring the junior Play, Class Rings, Prom, and Sweaters. But no matter what the future holds, we will always remember the fun we had during our Sophomore year. BACK ROW I I.-R 7: A. Morcira, F. Gnevarra, T. Houlc, W. Ploch, D. Barnes, L. Carl son, I. This dedication, in a small way, thanks Bill for all of his untiring hours and years of loyal service to L.U.H.S. My thanks are sincerely extended to each and every member of the Annual Staff for the hours of fine work and cooperation they have contributed toward making this, as we feel, the biggest and best annual ever. Special acknowledgements go to Pat Lower, Art Editor, for designing our cover and divider pages. To George Perozzi, Sports Editor, for his fine work on the Sports Sec- tion. To our Annual Staff advisors, Mrs. A. Haskell, and Mrs. V. Beavers, for their much needed part in the publication of this Annual. Last, but not least, we acknowledge the Administration, Faculty, and the Associated Student Body of Lompoc Union High School, for their wholehearted support. We hope as you read and view the 1954 LA PURISIMA, you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed putting forth our every possible effort in editing it. WAYNE TOLMAN Editor-in-Chief ASSISTANT EDITORS MESSAGE The 1954 LA PURISIMA attempts to depict school life outside the classroom. Throughout the LA PURISIMA, we have tried to insert an intimate. inside view of Lompoc Union High School, so that when looking at it, each may have memories of their high school days. To the Staff, it is a product of hard work and difficult problemsg however, fun and companionship were very much a part of our workshops. Now we can look at the finished product with a sense of satisfaction. In closing, I would like to say that to work with Editor-in-Chief Tolman was tt great pleasure. A personal Thank You to all the Staff members for their efforts and co-operation. NOREEN PAASKE, Assistant Editor SMOKE SIGNAL BACK ROW CL-RJ 1 D. Betts, M. Wheeler, L. Nickson, B. Swonger, F. The newspaper staff has worked hard this year in an attempt to publish the Smoke Signal, without fail, every two weeks. We take pride in the knowledge that we have managed to accomplish this. Through the efforts of our eager beaver staff, we believe great improvements have been made in the paper this year. Our main goal in reporting the news, has been to reflect the views of the combined associated student body. We have enjoyed working together in producing the Smoke Signal and sincerely hope our eagerness will be carried on in the years to come. Our sincere thanks go out to the many people who have aided us in the turning out of this paper. CHARLOTTE NEGUS MRS. HASKFLI Editor-in-chief Amricor STUDENT COUNCIL COMMISSIONERS BACK ROW KL-RJ: B. A matinee performance was presented on November 18th. The successful satire held in the High School Auditorium was written by Ame Coulter Martins. This play owed much of its success to its director, Mrs. Kathleen Griffith and her assistant, Pat Lower. The stage set was attractively done in modern furniture, even to the television set. The stage crew who were responsible were: Bruce Hamlin, Arlen Sechrest, Frank Sig- norelli, Alfred Perry, Dan Dutra, james Grossini, and M. Lester Sabin. The prompters were Doris McCoy and Wtxyne Tolman. Lighting crew was Forrest Hibbits and Bruce Hamlin. Nancy Showers, Doris McCoy, Barbara Swonger and Karen Hellekson were the prop crew. This poignant play was a take-off on sorority life which was very enjoyable. PROP CREW. SENIOR PLAY THE PERFECT IDIOT JUNIOR PLAY CAST MARGARET TENNYSON, mother ,..... ........ The others who helped make this paly a success consisted of the production staff who were Stage Manager, Dan Dutra, Business Manager, Shirley Herrin, Publicity Man- ager, Don Linderholm, Prompter, Lothele Toleman, Properties, Kay Hume, Betty Mitty, Sandy Ramos, Judith Stokes and Lothele Tolman. Makeup was by Janice Betts. Nancy Youngblood, Nancy Allen and Dorothy Domingos. The Light Technician was Forrest Hibbits. Faculty Advisors were Virginia Beavers and Frank Krause. The stage setting was very well done by Lester Sabin and the Stage Class. The play was a big success financially and enjoyed by all. YI YVH S 4 -4 l HOMECOIVI I NC- OF 1953 The Homecoming Game for this year was scheduled to be played with Carpenteria, but due to the postponement of several games, it was finally scheduled with Santa Maria on November 21. Because of the warm weather, the pep assembly was held in the bleachers with the football team in their blue and white game uniforms, which seemed to give much addi- tional spirit. The yell leaders, majorettes, song leaders, and band gave a very colorful performance, which was enjoyed by all the students. The queen and her attendants were presented to the Student Body during the assembly. Preceding the football game, the band, majoretres, and football 'team formed an honor guard directly in front of the bleachers. A Chevrolet convertible, driven by Mr. Rojas carrying the attendants, was then driven onto the field. The attendants and their escorts formed a semi-circle as follows: Charles Wfilliams and Judy Stokes, Jim Feeley and Sharon Canfield, Gloria Sousa and Francis Beattie, and Beverly Eckert and Sherman Hansen. The Homecoming Queen of 1955, Denny Lundberg, was driven onto the field in an Oldsmobile convertibile driven by Mrs. Burton. Rodney Eckert and Freddie Mont- ana helped her from the car and accompanied her to the center of the circle. She was then presented with a dozen red roses by the football captain, joe Silva, after which, they were escorted to a reserved section in the bleachers. HOMECOIVI I NC- C-AME Following the game, the Homecoming Dance was held at the Community Center. At 11:15 P.M., Francis Beattie crowned Denny Queen of Homecoming, preceding the Queen's Waltz. Following the Grand March, cookies and punch were served by members of the Student Council in the lobby of the Community Center. 'The decorations for the dance consisted of a huge brown crepe paper football sus- pended from the ceiling with blue and white streamers decorating the walls. The hall was decorated by members of the Student Council, under the direction of Mrs. Beavers. Two goal-line stands in the fourth quarter were the highlights of a 0-0 game. The Blue and White then beat Santa Clara 15-7 when Narz Terrones scored with six seconds left in the game. The following week Lompoc was defeated by St. Monica's. Several despera- tion passes by the Mariners in the last quarter accounted for two touchdowns which fi- nally resulted in a 14-7 loss. Templeton was then downed by the Braves as Jim Grossini scored the first touchdown in a 33-6 victory. After that Lompoc traveled to Atascadero for a game with the Greyhounds. This was the peak of the season for the team as they came home with a 6-6 tie against a powerful and highly favored Greyhound squad. The next three games were postponed because of the polio scare. Every day the group went out for practice not knowing whether they would play that week or not. During these three weeks they kept working hard and never lost spirit. Their hard work and effort was finally reward- ed when Harvard came down to fill in for scheduled Atascadero. The boys came back determined and took Harvard by a score of 6-0. A third quarter drive ending with Don Linderholm's score was the margin of victory. The Braves then journied south for the rematch and came out on top again by the same score. In the closing game of the season, the Blue and White of Lompoc ran into trouble when they dropped a 16-0 battle to the Santa Maria Saints in the homecoming game. The Braves ended the season with four wins, two ties, and two defeats. They had a hard rock n' sock team that never gave up and never lost spirit. C OACHE5 .l. Dodge, H. The Bravelets opened their season with a 20-15 victory over the Arroyo Grande Eaglets. The junior Varsity next smothered the Santa Maria Saintlets 25-6 on their own field. The team again traveled far away, only to lose a thrilling 18-6 game to the Santa Ynez Varsity. At the first home game our J.V.'s met with Atascadero. Atascadero scored only once during a 19-6 Lompoc win. The game scheduled with Los Prietos was cancelled because of the polio scare. The squad then traveled to San Luis where they dropped a 25-12 battle. The last game of the season was a return match with the Santa Maria. The Bravelets easily outpowered the Saintlets with a 58-6 victory. The Bravelets ended a very successful season with four wins against two defeats. The team was captained by Frank Guevarra. They ended the season with an impressive 18 wins against 4 defeats. This record does not give a true picture of their ability, however. The league was exceptionally well bal- anced this year and many of the games were won or lost by very narrow margins. The varsity placed three on the all-conference teams this year. Charles Short on the first team and Narz Terrones and Sherman Hansen on the second team. All of these boys did outstanding jobs for the Blue and White during the season. Sherman Hansen set a record of 31 points in one game against Carpinteria and set the season scoring record at 256. Narz Terrones and Charles Short were captains for the season. The league championship was a hard fight and was not decided until the last game of the season. The team ended the year with a 14-5 record, most of the games being won or lost by a very narrow margin. The co-captains for the year were: Charles Williams, Marshall Soliz, and George Perozzi. TW SENIOR TRIP Class of 1954 May 15-28, 1954 Instead of the traditional Ditch-Day, the Senior Class of 1954 went on a two week educational trip. The trip was a successful culmination of four years devoted to scholas- tic and extra-curricular activity. Only students who had maintained a passing grade aver- age and had had no disciplinary problems were permitted to go. In order for the trip to take place, 31,500 was needed to cover expenses. This mon- ey was raised in various methods: Food Sales, Senior Play, Operation Service Station' Slave Auction. Each student was required to put in eight hours work or the equivalent of 81.00 per hour. The trip, thirteen days long, covered six states, including California. They were: Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada. Points of interest were: The Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce National Parks, Salt Lake, B.Y.U., Salt Lake City, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, jackson I-Iole, Idaho Falls, Carson and Virginia Cities, Reno, Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and home. A typical day was Good Morning at 5:50 in the A.M., climbing eagerly out of their sleeping bags, cleaning up, girls to the kitchen and the boys off to the packing of the bus. Breakfast and then all aboard for the day's ride. Sleeping facilities were in the classrooms or gym of the school of the town at which they stopped for the night. Kit- chen facilities were in the cafeteria or Home Economics department of the same school. Fifty-four students enjoyed the trip immensely and are cherishing many exciting memories. 2 .
