Superintendentfs Message As youth of the nation, your thoughts extend toward the future and what it holds for you. Physical frontiers have disappeared, but the ever-widening frontiers for improving social and human welfare within the country and thc world present unlimited challenges. Good education is indispensable in promoting social progress and world peace. It is an invest- ment which pays ever-larger dividends in per- sonal satisfaction and useful social service. Equip yourself with those skills and understandings which make you a good, contributing citizen. Develop those attitudes and ideas giving spiritual DI. Florell Vice Principafs Message y MY' SENTINIENT f'Education does not mean teaching people what they do not know. It means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. It is not teaching the youth the shapes of letters and the tricks of numbers, and then leaving them to roguery, and their literature to lust. It means, on the contrary, training them into the perfect exercise and kingly continence of their bodies and souls. It is a pain' Edward E. Kaufman-Vice-Principal ful, continual and difficult -work to be done by kindness, g by watching, by warning, by precept and by praise, but If above all-by example. Board of Trustees . lNIilton E Nelson Chairman of Board VVe regard it a real privilege and nianifest responsibility to have had some part in giving direction to the educational program at our high school. The American public school will determine the future of free men. The solution of each problem urgently requires the combined consideration ol the board, administrators. teachers. students, and the community. lt is our understanding and acceptance of this fact that encourages us to strive toward greater achievements. The opportunity to develop skills and abilities essential to happy. suc- cessful home and community living is our challenge. Left to Right: Wayne Roberts, Harry H. Collier. This class was well represented in all the other sports too. and took honors at, the Interclass track meet. Early in the year we sponsored a Soc Hopu so everyone could feel natural again. and it was enjoyed by all who attended. This year there were two perlorniances of The Daffy Hills. the annual Junior Play. It was a farce-comedy and quite hilarious. The entire class helped in making it such a huge success. A few faithful students let their hair down taking the role of freaks lor the Junior booth in the Senior Carnival and attracted much attention. The ol barn Cgyni. that isl was Cleaned out and the class threw a big barn dance in March. The boys donned their Levis, for a change, the girls calicos and all had a rip roarin. time. lVe decided it was time for the .luniors to act dignified so we picked Applc Blossom Tiinei' as the theme for the prom. It was a dreamy occasion. Follow ing the example of the Class ol' '-I-9. the .luniors bought class sweaters that ar-- really sharp in green and while. The usual initiation was not as rambunctious as in former years. The mild and meek Freshies were given a break, must of whom were able to get home under their own power. The Fifty-oners' turn at the concessions at the football games was pleas' ingly successful. Anything that was hot was sure to be a success on those cold. drippy nights . . . you coudn't miss. Next year the class plans to ask for the footwarmer concession. Our other venture to get rich quick was to sell pencils Cno one had to sit on the street corner with a hat full, howeverj for a nickel each. The basketball schedule for 1949 was printed on each pencil. A few brave Sophs superinlended the cleaning of the ML. It takes lots oi' brawn and brains to shine the place up each year. Except for a few skinned knees and sore muscles almost everyone came through unscratched. Parents complained that most of the chalk rock came home plastered on their little babes. Nevertheless the Freshmen were mighty proud of their accomplish- ment . . . plus poison oak and such . . . but it really was the superhuman effort of the Sophcmores that made it an achievement. The Valentine Dance at the grannnar school auditorium was one of the big e.ents ot the year for the seventh and eighth grades. A large red heart adorned the stage drapes with leisure hearts around it. Niiss Komurka supervised the decorating. Ted Grant, Recreation Director. took charge cl' the music and dancing. llc had every boy and girl out on the floor trying to follow his directions. Schottisches. square dances, polkas. waltvges, virginia reels, fox trots, shuffle dances and whistle dances made a pleasing variety of dances so that nw one became bored. The PTA furnished the refreshments of sandwiches and punch. When ten-thirty came we loathed to go home. The party was a big success. and more are hoped to be held in the future. The first dance the .lunior High had this year was given October 22. lt was given by the eighth grade classes welcoming the seventh graders. The dance was sponsored bv Nlrs. Holden and Mrs. Nelson. with the assistance of some Junior teachers. The Junior High art teacher, Miss Komurka, with the help of some of her students decorated the auditorium. The refreshments were made and served by the eighth grade mothers. The dance was so entertaining that more are planned for. The eighth grade classes sold magazine subscriptions this year for the Curtis Publishing Company. In one week they brought in 5582.05 which was S132 more than the eighth grade classes sold last year. There were prizes given for two things. One given to the teachers of the room that sold the most subscriptions. The Us sold 3220.50 worth and. therefore Mrs. Strickland received a book. The second prize went to the individual who sold the most subscriptions from among the three classes. Rich Starbuck won a pen for selling the most subscriptions. He sold S55 worth. There were also prizes given for the number of subscriptions each person sold. The manager was Jimmy Campbell and the assistant manager was Loma Nelson. There was one captain from each room. Yep, Bob has been busy during his years here in LUHS and has a fine record to snow for it. And certainly one of the finest is this, 4'The Echoes of 74-Q. Little could have been accomplished but for the help of our dark-eyed Assistant Editor. Theresa kept us all a-hopping and saw to it that the staff Cwhich was oblivious to dead- linesj somehow managed to get the copy in on time. She was A.S.B. Amiable Herb Schroeder met the merchants and kept up the fiancial cnd of your yearbook .He was also the respected President of the ROBERT ALMANZO Editor-in-Chief ,pan- 3 THEBESA MARTIN Assistant Editor Service Club Cotherwise known as f'The hloney Grabbersvj and is headed for a career in business. Chris 4'Come to me, Honey Friis was 1.. charge of the pictorial section of the Echoes. He and his worthy assistant Benny QVVe're still wondering how they got on the staffj saw to it that all the photos were taken and developed. Believe me when those two were in the Darkroom plenty developed and not all of it was pictures. Friis was also kept busy with his important duties as Senior Class President. Lending a helping hand, was Ray Kitaguchi. ln charge of the art work, Carmelita Garcia worked with Tyke Grider, her assistant. and they together gave us the fine illustrations which highlight the yearbook. Brunette Adelina Mendez worked hard as Organization Editor. 'l his popular gal was also President of the Library Club and a mem- ber of the Smoke-Signal Staff. The first job was to set a regular meeting time. We' settled this by issuing passes to all the members permitting them to be excused from class for the meetings. Next a copy of the Constitution had to be located. When we found a copy of it, we held an assembly and read the entire Constitution to the Student Bcdy. After this assembly, we decided to draft a new Constitution. The first semester we also hired out-of-town talent for four assemblies which were presented in the second semester. As has been done in previous years, we exchanged assemblies with Santa Ynez High School. We visited Santa'lVIaria High School for a day to get new and different ideas of what other Student Councils were doing. Also we attended some meetings to organize an Inter-School Student Council among the ten neighboring schools. After a very peppy and fast-moving campaign, the new officers for the second semester took up their duties. During the second semester, we formed a Board of Commissioners consist- ing of six Commissioners to help strengthen the Council. This year more were given for A.S.B. cards than in former years. For sevrices rendered over a period of twenty years- the Council pre- sented to lXlr. and lVIrs. George F. Kimbel a 'iLifetime Pass entitling them to attend, free of charge, any school activity. The Council handled the food concessions at the Lompoc 4'9 Relays, also the Boxing Tournament. The members of the Council were given pins designating the office a student held.
