' That was something of the way we felt in our first year of high school. But after the first few weeks the newness began to wear away, and we began to feel at home, even though we persisted in flying from one class to another and making too much noise. During the first semester our class was given an initiation dance in the school gym, and, much to our amazement, we didn't even have to swallow a worm or eat a raw egg. NVe freshmen returned the favor the next semester with a dance given for the sophomores at the banquet hall in the Veterans Memorial Building. Luckily enough, we weren't forced to clean the L due to the wartime re- strictions, and the sophomores never quite forgave us for that. SOPHOJIORE This year we didn't fly quite so fast to classes and talk with such loud voices. The whole year was fun, and we might add, a little more work in the in- tellectual department. lYe gave the freshmen a rip-roaring initiation party with dances, games. and good eats. The freshmen gave us their return party a few weeks later, and it was a complete success. J IINIOI1? Upper classmenl VVe're really living now! lt's certainly a wonderful feel- ing to be regarded as in completely. lVe got the year off to a fine start by giving many of the Friday night dances which proved so successful. Magazine subscriptions were also sold by members of our class during the first part of the year. A prize was awarded to Tommy lN'lcCall for selling the most subscriptions. The junior class netted two hundred dollars in this undertaking. Our junior play, China Boy , was a delightful comedy which was a suc- cess even though there were a few mishaps. A party was given for us after the play. This year has been the fullest and the most fun of all so far. SENIOR Ah-we are seniors at last. This is what we have been striving toward for four years. Our -Christmas Formal came off on December Zlst and was given at the Alpha Club, which was attractively decorated with greens and candles. During the last week in April, we presented Tomorrow Heaven which proved to be a unique play and a wonderful success. Our class this year has also been very active at the Youth Canteen. The Senior Variety show on May 31st was the first in at least four years. Everyone agreed that it was a huge success and many students pitched in and helped to put it over. After much heated debate and conversation, we came to a decision on the date of ditch-day. It was spent at the beach and was a most memorable day. And here it is graduation time, yet we have very little idea of where the years have disappeared. XYe've learned a lot in these four years, had many swell times, and we'll miss you. THE LEGEND OF THE BRAVES SEPT. 10Q0n the rise of the first moon, another year of history began for our great tribe. New faces had appeared that had never been seen before-young braves and maidens entering into their four years of training. SEPT. 28YThis afternoon we elected the chiefs of the tribe. The whole tribe was very interested in th out-come of this exciting contest. SEPT. 29+On this Saturday, we went to the contest field to watch our football team challenge our old rivals, the Saints. The crowd was eager to see our fellows win, but such was not the will of the gods, and our team suffered defeat. The Braves were now determined to meet the Saints again at much different odds. OCT. 2-Just after the rise of the second moon, a traveler came to visit our camp. He was connected with the U. S. Army, as his rank was that of lieutenant, and spoke to us about the great World War II. His name was Lt. Smith. OCT. 6-Our Braves traveled to Arroyo Grande today: along with them went a large number of rooters. Although defeated, our team showed great improvement and so we felt that all the work and training was now beginning to show. OCT. 2-This year the usual .freshman initiation was not held. Instead, a picnic was enjoyed and games were played by all who attended. OCT 12-This year the usual freshman initiation was not held. Instead, a picnic was tendance was good, and a lot of Wampum for the annual was taken in. The dancers were all glad when the time came to return to camp. OCT. 23-A travel'ng magician came into our village this morning: his name was Virgil, and he was a much Letter trickster than our poor medicine man. This magician came to us through the local Kiwainis Club. OCT. 26-Our fighting Braves met Santa Maria once again. We all went over the hill to see this great contest. The Lompoc Braves gave the undefeated Saints their b'ggest scare of the season by dominating most of the game, but finally went down to defeat 12-0. Report cards came out and for some of us it was not so good at home, but after a promise that we would do better next time, we were once again out and into the swing of things. NOV. 3hThree moons have now passed and all of the new faces have become familiar. On this Saturday, the Arroyo Grande team came to challenge us in a football contest. When we lost this contest, it seemed that a jinx was against us in all our games. However, the Brave's band was out to show us its accom- plishments and it did itself proud. NOV. 10+'l'he jinx was finally broken! We came from behind to defeat Atascadero 9-7. Heartened by this victory, the players really buckled down to work. NOV. 17-The first game of six-man football was held and it was more like a track meet than a football game. Tne Braves were way out in front all the way and defeated the Santa Ynez Pirates by about 36 points. The Santa Ynez band came over, and, along with the Lompoc band, showed its marching and playing ability. NOV. f30j'l'he football team rounded out its season with another one-sided victory, this time knocking over the Santa Barbara Catholic High School. After the game, everyone went into the village and had a lot of fun whooping and yelling as only the Braves can do it. DEC. 7-All over our land, people were experiencing their first peacetime Pearl Harbor Day and here in our own Hunting Grounds, the Tri-Y had a scavenger hunt and dance. This was held in the Alpha Club House and everyone had a very merry time chasing all over searching for everything from a head-dress to a rotten pomegranate. f' f its 'QP L K ' 'til x :Tia n 4 can x L time - Gil 5 aixMlW,Ll, f ith MMM DEC. 14-The boatmen of the tribe threw a dance and each one of them had a pretty girl with him. This Sea Scout Dance was very much of a success. DEC. 19-The final performance oi the Junior play, Creeping Shadows was presented to an audience which enjoyed it very muah. Murders were committed and the town sheriff appeared, but fortunately it was not the real thing. DEC. 20-The seniors of the tribe gave a Christmas Formal in hopes of making it an annual event. The hall was decorated in the traditional red, green and white of the season. To the braves of the tribe, and to the maidens as well, it was really a wonderful party. JAN. 18-AT'he Braves started the basketball season off successfully by winning all but the A weight game with Arroyo Grande. Our fighting Indians showed a lot of bold spirit, and the results proved it. s JAN. 26-Lompoc overwhelmed the Santa Ynez basketball teams in every class. The Pirates didn't even come into the class of the Braves. FEB. 11-The Sophomores of the iribe gave a Valentine dance for all the school. The hall was very attractive with hearts all around the room, and with very soft lights!! FEB. 13-The scouts among us attended another Court of Honor. They were all very glad to receive their newly-earned advancements. MAR. 15--Many moons after the Sophomore-Freshman picnic, the freshmen of tho tribe finally returned the party. Most of the older braves had forgotten about the party, but when it was held some of them were on hand to borrow one of the beautiful cakes baked especially for the occasion. MAR. 21-This year brought to our tribe a wonderful show, 'contributed by the musically-inclined members of the school under the able direction of Miss Mary K. Balaam. MAR. 25-In the first track meet in many moons all of the Brave runners made like the wind around the track. This was an interclass meet among the different groups of our tribe. Once again it made all of us feel as if our school were seeing a new life now that things were on their way back to normal. APRIL 2-We scalped our first baseball opponent, another tribe of Indians from Carpinteria, with an easy margin of victory. APRIL 5-The Braves again challenged their old rival the Santa Maria Saints, this time on the baseball diamond, and gained revenge by administering a thorough walloping to the opposing nine. APRIL 12-This was a real field day for our village. A championship baseball game was going on between San Luis Obispo and Lompoc while a track meet was being run off with Lompoc, Santa Maria and Arroyo Grande participating. Lom- poc won the meet and was defeated in the game. APRIL 14 to 21-Spring vacation came at last and all of the tribe welcomed the rest. APRIL 26-The Brave's baseball squad traveled to Arroyo Grande and added another victory to their board. APRIL 27-All of the runners went to Santa Maria to participate in the league meet held there. Lomopc made an outstanding showing in the light weight class and gave all of the others in the different classes a run for their Wampum. MAY 1 and 2-The Senior extravaganza Tomorrow Heaven was proclaimed a big hit and every one had a great deal of fun preparing it. MAY 11-All of the girls went to Santa. Maria to a play day . We missed not having them around, Qhubba, hubbajl MAY 17-The Band attended the Tri-County Band Festival in Santa Barbara. All of the members of the band had been working hard in preparation for this grand march andlconcert. As the band paraded down State Street with the majorettes and the tribal banner out in front, there wasn't a better looking band in the line of march. MAY 31-The annual Junior Prom was given in the Memorial Hall, and was attended by many former Braves, now out of the service. The decorations cleverly carried I out the theme of Fairyland . JUNE 9-The Baccalaureate service was very inspiring to all of the graduating braves. JUNE 12jCommenc.ement exercises were most impressive, the auditorium was decor- ated with beautlful flowers :ind drapes. The Brave band played as the Seniors of '46 marched down the aisle of the auditorium on their last official tribal action. The time h rest of our great land. Another year for our tribe has closed, but soon another shall start as it is a never-ending cycle . . . as now come, my son, for me to leave the tribe and venture out into the BUD HOBBS I .EE lll 01 W x Xxx fed it li V ll , ll CJ 9 1 ,...
