Q 'Q-J 'N The football season of Lometa High School began Au- gust15with the issuing of suits to 33 boys. On the following Tuesday, training was started with a few laps, calisthenics, and a little blocking. At first the practice was held late in the afternoon, but after a while practice was held at night. Coach Letbetter quickly got the boys into shap e for the game with Lampa s a s B team, September 3, and took a 6-0 win. Soon new equipment began c oming in and the boys got suited out properly. The new equipment probably has saved many bad bruises and sore places. 5 om e of the boys have received a few bad breaks, but lite rally, we had no real broken bones, just charley horses and the like. These were not enough to keep the Hornets down. ' The s e C ond non-conference g a m e was with Cherokee, September 10. T hi s game als o was a win for the Lometa Hornets. The lone score came in the first quarter, and the 6-O score remained until the final whistle. But then on September 16, disaster struck the Hornets. The Early High Longhorns c am e up with a decisive w in of 33-U. The Hornets were complimented as being th e clean- est team that Early had played. In the next game, the Hornets began r olling again with an easy victory over the Burnet B , taking them 34-0. The boy s were s howing improvement in blocking and tackling. And another good thing, all 33 of the boys remain- ed out. . With the opener of the c onfe r e nc e season, the Hornet eleven edged by Cherokee with a slim score of Z-O. This got Lometa by one of their toughest opponents. In the second c onfe r e nc e game, Lometa won over the johnson City Eagles by a safe 31-O score. On October 15, Lometa ran up its highest score inthree years-or maybe longer. The Hornets rolled ov er Liberty Hill 53-0. So far, the Lometa eleven has been unscored on in conference play. ' This r ec ord was also kept up when the Hornets tooka hard-fought 12-O victory from Bertram, October ZZ. When Florence fo r f eit ed its g a m e , Lometa's record showed fiv e wins against no losses--and no scores against them. But on November 4, a team that had lo st only once-to Cherokee, came to Lometa looking for a win. And they found it. Leander topped Lometa by a close margin of b-0. T h i s threw the di s t r ic t in a three-way tie. Lometa, Leander and Cherokee held top places. In a meeting of the district officials, L o m eta and Leander were declared C0- Champions of District 36-B. T he district committee ruled that Lometa would play Le a nde r, November ZU, at Eurnet for the right to represent the district in a bi-district run- off. But again the game was not in favor of Lometa. The Leander elev en edged past the Hornets 6-O for the second time this year with the same score. A large caravan went to Burnet for the game. The football s q ua d had chartered a bus, the fans had c ha rte red two buses, the school took three buses, and a large number went in cars. The Lometa eleven had a very good d efen s iv e record. They yielded only 45 points in 10 g am e s, an average of 4.5 points per game. The offensive record was not so bad either. Lometa sc ored 144 points, for an average of 14.4 points per game. ln all it can be said that the Hornets had a very success- ful season this year and are looking forward to another one like it next year. f ,M 1.
