Not to the strong is the battle, Not to the swift is the race . ! . Ecclesiastes 9:11 (paraphrased) How do I love thee ' Let me count my ways. I love thee with the force of tempered steel that holds together all my frail deformities, the power of a mind grown far too strong to over- balance any weekness in my hands. I cannot give thee strength or graceful form but, just for that, my love is twice as great because it seems to thrive in desert soil and flourish in indif- ference ' s drought. I love thee with the power of my will, my mind and heart and soul, my everything, and when the spark of this frail form shall tail, then have no doubt that I shall love thee still. % k es!»i- ' ' ' ..■V.T Af !■ ' ' J Thought shall be the harder, heart the keener, courage the greater. As our strength fails. Battle of Maldon (lOth century) If one word could be used to describe Dr. Ernestina Garbut- Parrales it would have to be Dedication. Dedication is a word that has permeated her life ever since its humble beginnings in the small country of Belize (British Honduras). Dr. Garbutt learned dedication at an early age being that she was the child of missionaries. But it didn ' t stop there. She went on not only to complete undergraduate and graduate work in Secreterial Science, but also to complete a Doctoral Degree in Spanish Phoenetics at the University of Southern California in 1977. Students who have been fortunate to have had her as a teacher know that she is dedicated to academics. But that is not the only form of dedication which Dr. Garbutt has. She also possesses a strong, vibrant dedication to life and Uving it to the fullest extent. Early in the 1960 ' s Dr. Garbutt contracted a rare disease called Scleroderma. This disease is a degenerative disease which affects the body tissue. But because of her extreme determination this has hardly been able to slow her down. Among the various activities with which Dr. Garbutt fills her free time are drawing, painting and enjoying her pets. She also finds time to attend Thursday nights at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, read and write poetry. But there ' s also travel. Dr. Garbutt has travelled extensively to Spain and Europe. While in Spain she teaches at the University of Salamanca and when in Europe she visits her sister in Switzerland. As one can plainly see Dr. Ernestina Garbutt is an individual tru- ly dedicated to life and living it to the fullest. She is one who won ' t let anything stop her from achieving all that she is able. So for un- surpassed determination and dedication, we the 1984-85 VISIONS staff dedicate these pages to you ... Dr. Ernestina Garbutt-Parales. Photography, Hilhard Gnggs Dedication 5
