' QQ PRESENTS IN PICTURE AND PARAGRAPH A PERMANENT RECORD OF YOUR ACTIVITIES FOR TI-IE YEAR 1949-50 AT LOGANSPORT HIGH SCHOOL LOGANSPORT INDIANA P ge Three IT'S ALL IN THE RECCRD If you made straight A's when you were a freshmang if you were vice-president of your sophomore class, if you made the varsity basketball team in your junior year, or if, as a senior, you were elected to the honor society, these facts are recorded on your permanent record card and pre- served in the files of L.H.S. The card also contains a record of your attendance and punctuality and estimates made by your teachers of your initiative, dependability, and co-oper- ation. If you wish to enter college, this card becomes the basis of the credentials sent to the college authorities. When a prospective employer inquires about you, this card is the basis of the recommendations made by the principal. Itls all in the record-the complete story of your high school career. FORMS AND BOOKS A number of other cards in use about the school are more familiar to students than the permanent record card. Those shown below are a few of several in use for admin- istrative purposes. Any student who has been absent must obtain an admit to class from one of the deans. A utardy slip,', which is handed a student who enters a classroom or study hall late, is usually accompanied by a Q'7th period assignment slip, which somewhat prolongs the school day. lVIuch more welcome are the passes which give entree to the library, where the student may browse quietly through books and magazines or do serious study in connection with a class assignment. Students who wish to use the library sign a card indicating their willingness to use the materials prop- erly. Passes for pleasure reading are issued only to those whose classwork is being done to the satisfaction of their teachers. They were the measure of a studentls scholastic success- success in the main business of school life. They were a measure of his industry and application, an indication of his growth and development. They were his passports, too, to extracurricular activities, since participation in athletics and the number of other extras he could undertake depended on his standing in his classes. Grades may also affect one's chances of entering the college of his choice or of obtaining a coveted position. Therefore the marks which were placed on the yellow cards at the end of each six-weeks' period were a matter of concern to all. It's really nothing serious. There's more to cooking than eating. Art class discovers new tolents. Latin students recreate old Rome. WORK AND PLAY -- The number and variety of clubs and other extracurricular activities indi- cate that they play an important part in the life of L. H. S. There are organi- zations to suit every taste-athletic, artistic, musical, or social. As new interests arise new clubs are formed, the Projectors' Club was organized this year for boys interested in operating moving picture machines. While most clubs carried out their activities in a traditional manner, several new projects were addedg for example, Hi-Y's Aunt Jemima breakfast and the weekly noon movies sponsored by the student council. Because clubs offer so many opportunities for the exer- cise of leadership, responsibility, and initiative, they play an important role in the educational program of the school. If no special event interrupted, students passed the time from 8:25 to 11:25 in their regular three periods of fifty-five minutes each. After the lunch hour rush, classes were resumed at 12:35 and continued until 3:35. Then students left the building unless some extracurricular activity claimed them, or some irregularity kept them in Room 122. By a few minutes after four the building was left to the custodians, to be made ready for another day. The fall season featured the homecoming, with its parade and crowning of the queeng the first of the library listening hour programsg the Aunt Jemima pancake breakfastg and the special Thanksgiving program. The traditional pageant and caroling in the halls ushered in the Christmas holidays. The following months brought the change of semesters, the Valentine dance, the basket- ball tournaments, and the Hi-Tri formal. With spring came the week of Easter vacation, soon to be followed by the senior play, the prom, bac- calaureate, and the other senior activities preceding commencement. All juniors and seniors went first to a general assembly in the auditor- ium. Nlr. Xlertz welcomed the guests, and Nlr. Blclicnzie outlined the purposes of the meeting and the procedure to be followed. Then Nlr. lfmet Talley, Indiana Employment Security Divis- ion representative, spoke on Occupational Trends in Indiana and the Nlid-XVest,N after which Mr. An eye to The future Douglas Myers and Mr. Richard Dylceman. L.H.S. graduates of Indiana and Purdue respect- ively, gave tips on how to choose a college. A forty-five minute period followed during which group meetings were addressed by representatives from ten different colleges and approximately twenty vocations. Then students who were inter- ested in a particular college or vocation were granted personal interviews in which they had an opportunity to discuss their own particular problems. Most students felt that they had hen- efited greatly from the meetings and interviews. Planning to attend college? Composed of boys who were interested in oper- ating projectors for the audio-visual program of the school, the club had a charter membership of of twenty-four. The officers were James Osborn, president, -Iere Goodwin, vice-president, and Ronald Fouts, secretary. Mr. Evers is sponsor of the club. A committee of the student council discusses details of the handbook, The ABC's of L.H.S., which the council is compiling and which will be distributed to students in September, 1950. The book will give information about all phases of school life and will be particularly useful to stu- dents entering L.I-I.S. for the first time. Girls in the home nursing class are practicing what they have learned about the care of a bed patient. For the first time since 1946 home nurs- ing was offered to girls as a substitute for health and safety. The course included a study of phys- iology as well as training in the care of the sick. Miss Healey taught the class. Ann Taylor, the head of the lost and found department sponsored by the student council, is here checking the articles turned in. From 8:10 to 8:30 each morning and again from 12:15 to 12:30 at noon a student council member was on duty in Room 7, where articles which had been found could be turned in or called for. GAILY WHIRL Dancesl Class dances, after-game dances. teen canfeen dances, and noon dances provided ample opportunity for L. H. S. students to dance to their hearts' content. The music ranged from recorded to that provided by name bandsg the apparel worn, from blue jeans to formals. Classes tried for originality in their dances, as witness the jun- ior's Sadie Hawkin's dance with its cabbage cor- sages. ln the prom, which was the last and most important dance of the year, originality combined with beauty was the aim. On Wednesday, December 28, the Teen Can- teen celebrated its fifth birthday with a dance at which Dick Wolf and Pat Hopkins were crowned king and queen. Square dancing was featured at the sophomore Valentine dance held in the old gym February 14. A professional caller led the couples in the Vir- ginia Reel. After football and basketball games students met in the old gym to enjoy an hour or two of dancing to the music of the swing band. In a beautifully transformed Berry Bowl, jun- iors and seniors strolled down Memory Lane and danced to the music of Dick Mordentils band at the '49 prom. -- 1 2' ,rt ., : gr' :Ka ,ar i f , , wp . , . my - ' ,- L , 3 f, ff , f'i.af f gifffi ' , ' , W u New Football Field From September to June the various Logansport teams fought gal- lantly for the glory of L.H.S. at the Berry Patch, in the Berry Bowl, or on the cinder path or baseball field. The athletic program was designed to engage as many boys as possible in directed activities which would con- tribute to their mental and physical well being. All sport fans were gratified at the progress made during the year in the construction of a football stadium, located a half mile east of the city limits. Ground was broken in the early fall and the progress of the work promises that the stadium will be ready for use in the fall of 1950. P Q Twcrifyr. Page T wenfy,FiVe I f' ' 'rf' rms t swf., FCLLOWING THE FARISMEN Kokomo 7, Logansport 14! That's what the scoreboard read at the end of the game on Oc- tober Z6. For the first time in nearly two decades a rough, tough bunch of Red Devils ran over the highly touted Kokomo Wildcats. This game was the season's highlight, although there were many other thrillers. The Red Devils' four initial contests were fought against Monticello, Peru, Marion, and Frankfort. The resulting total of points was a massive 149 for Logan while their opponents were held scoreless. It was in the game with Frankfort on September 20 that the Satans made their historic goal line stand, holding against the Nighthawks' nine attempts within the five-yard line. The Devils first defeat of the season came at New Castle on October 7, where a series of costly fumbles cost them the game. At Jeff the Faris- men went down to another defeat due to the Page Twenty-Six breaks that Jeff received on two long touch- down passes. At Delphi the Satans bounced back into the win column, again holding their oppon- ent scoreless. After the aforementioned Kokomo tilt the Devils lost the final game to Muncie Cen- tral at Berry Patch. The year's record of six games won, three lost was the best in nineteen years. At the season's end Dick Berndt made all- state second team, Fred Bauman, Gerald Hewitt, and Otto Hilbert made honorable mention, and Larry Basham made all-conference guard. Mr. Keith Showalter. had a more successful season than the number of games won would indi- cate. They started the season with four straight wins and then during the regular season won only one more game. This was a very sweet victory, however, since it was over Jeff of Lafayette, a team that reached the finals of the state tourney. The Berries went through the sectionals fairly easily, but were defeated by an unusually strong Richland Center team in the regionals. During the regular season and tournament play the Berries continually exhibited the spirit and sportsmanship necessary to a good basketball team. With five juniors and three soph- omores returning, the Berries should be a basketball power next season. The Logansport G.A.A. is affiliated with the state league, and members participate in the an- nual state camp activities. The local association also uses the state adopted system of awards in which points are granted for attendance at reg- ular meetings and for participation in sports. A felt shield is awarded for 150 points, a letter for 250 points, and a plaque for 350 points. In addition to the activities carried on as a part of their regular program G.A.A. had a part in a number of events scheduled at Logansport and elsewhere. The Logansport G.A.A. was host for a playday held at L.H.S. on February 18. Forty-five G.A.A. members and their sponsors from Delphi, Peru, and Monticello attended in addition to the Logansport members. The pur- pose of the playday was to develop friendship among girls from various schools. At noon a nose bag lunch was served in the high school cafeteria. Later in the day everyone enjoyed a swim in the L.H.S. pool. Cn Nlarch ll Barbara Klinefelter, jean Best, Shirley Gast, and Barbara McMillen represented the local G.A.A. at the Purdue basket- ball clinic. Here officiating techniques and inter- pretations of fouls were illustrated by members of the Purdue physical education department. In the late fall they fol- lowed the example of the upperclassmen and held an election, selecting Phyllis Daggett as their first president. By spring they knew their way around well enough to sponsor the Freshman Fling. In their sophomore year they were beginning to feel more at home. Fred Bauman took over the presidentis chair and under his leadership the As juniors they began to feel important. The junior year was filled with activities in prepara- tion for the annual Prom. In order to raise money, the class sponsored the Junior Concert. Otto Hil- bert was the capable president of the class that was responsible for the beautiful prom of 749 with the appropriate tlfme, iiMC1HOfiCS.,i Finally they were mighty seniors. With 1950 came the class sponsored l'The Old-Look Hopi' in the spring of '48, baccalaureate and commencement.
