N 5 s X Q x SGHULHRSHIP, CHHRHCTEH, LEHDEHSHIP Hllll SERVICE Page Forty-Six Scholarship, character, leadership and service - these are the ideals of thc National Honor Society, and the traits upon which candi- dates are chosen for membership. These high qualifications make mem- bership in this organization one of the most coveted distinctions ot a high school career, for those elected, who claim the torch and key- stone as their badge of honor, justly feel that they have had a stamp of approval placed upon them by their classmates and teachers. The Logansport chapter of the National Honor Society was founded in 193-l and until 19-12 enrolled both juniors and seniors, forming an active membership. At the present time, however, students are not admitted until the latter half of their senior year, making sure that only those who remain worthy throughout their whole high school career shall be thus honored. Only those pupils who arc in the upper third of their class are eligible tor election into the Honor Society, and the maximum number elected may not exceed fifteen per cent of the graduating elass. The seniors eligible for membership are first voted upon hy the student body, and then by members ot the faculty. Those selected are inducted into the society in an impressive eer- emony at which they pledge themselves to uphold the high standards of the society to which they have been elected, and write their names on the roll of the Logan chapter of the National Ilonor Society. The faculty committee which sponsors the local chapter is made up of Miss Smith, chairman, Miss Pitman, and Mr. Ferguson, deans, Mr. Cox, Mr. Hume, and Miss Richardson. 11111111 STUDENTS 11111119 LEHIJEHS 1011101130111 11Iy111'y 1111111111 111 11111 s111111111 y111111 3111. Although the Bere- ries had a good season, with 16 wins and 9 losses, their outstanding feature was their free-throw average. A player who hits 50? of his attempts from the char- ity stripe is good, and L.II.S. thinks that an average of 6076 is so good that the player deserves a trophy. As a rule, not more than one player a year hits 605770, but this year four passed the mark and won their trophy. Jack Herron led, with 73.33, Joe Rauch came second, with 71.5735 Bill Hopkins third, with 69.5W, and Waylie Dunbar fourth, with 61.5256 The whole team had the outstanding rec- ord of hitting 64.37.of the total free- throw shots taken. Coach Wells said that he has not had such accuracy since 1937 when the Berries, in the state tournament, hit 9021 to establish a state record. The Berries carried a regular eighteen game schedule, but played a twenty-six game season including the New Year's Day Big Four Tourney, taken by Ander- son, four sectional games, one regional game, and the final Will-be, Has-been game. ln the Northwest Conference, Lo- gansport finished the season in seventh place. The Berries held a good stand in the conference 'rating until they were dealt two losses by the tenth place Ko- komo five. Next year's squad will be minus six boys: Dunbar, Herron, Hopkins, Jamison, Smith, and Warner, all seniors, who saw a majority of the action this year.
