Logansport Captures C ass State Title in Two Gvertimes By AI Nassif Logansport's Tigers refused to buckle under to adversity Saturday evening, and as a re- sult they're wearing the Class A state crown today following a pulse-pounding 53-50 double overtime victory over Greens- burg. Coach W. C. Speights' Tigers, who almost blew Greensburg off the court during a sizzling first half performance, couldn't get their offense cranked up in the third period and in the process saw a nine-point period, the Ti- gers trailed by two, but when the chips were down, they kept their cool and came through with the win. I can't say enough about these girls, a happy coach Speights said after the game. They have dedicated them- selves for the past four years to win this championship. We have no individual star on the team. They all play together, and be- cause of this dedication, I sel- dom have to get after them in a game. Speights, whose team finished with a glittering 24-1 record for the year, said he felt a change in Greenburg's defense in the second half had a lot to do with his team's had showing in the third period. The big thing about the change was the aggressive guarding by Mona Williams at Logansport's Connie Loftin. Miss Loftin's hot hand in the first half, when she scored 20 points, was the main reason for the nine-point halftime lead the Tigers enjoyed. B ut with Miss Williams guarding her close, Miss Loftin managed only three points. in the final two periods and the March 6, 1971 double overtime, finishing with a game high 23 points. During the second half, Miss Loftin made only one-of-nine shots from the field, and late in the game missed a wide open short jumper that would have given her team the victory in regulation play. After rallying to erase the nine-point deficit in the third pe- riod, Greensburg, which had three players finish in double figures, had to rally again in the fin-al two minutes to erase a four-point Q45-413 Logansport lead. Connie Smith, who was sec- ond to mate Janet Varnado with 16 points, started the comeback with a short jumper that whittled the deficit to 45-43. Af- ter Lois Barrett's free throw made in 46-43, a free throw by Varnado, who had 18 points for the game, and a field goal by Miss Smith with 45 seconds left I-08Hl1Sp0rt 15 30 34 46 48 53 Gr 50 BCHSUUFE 8 21 36 46 43 LOGANSPORT - Loftin 23, Wallis 13, Muse 8, Speights 4, Waggener, Barnett 5. Melissa Muse drove down the lane for a two-pointer 20 sec- onds into the second overtime period, giving Logansport a lead it never relinquished. Icing was added when Miss Wallis bagged one of two free throws with 14 seconds remain- ing, and then Miss Barnett upped the advantage to five points with two free throws with six seconds showing on the clock. Greensburg's only two points came just before the buzzer when Logansport allowed Miss Carter to drive in for an easy layup.
