L. Message xx Haw There have been many evaluations of education in terms of eco- nomic productivity and intellectual output. There have been many lengthy definitions of education. What seems to me to be one of the simplest and most meaningful is that the function of education is to teach people to understand and to appreciate the world in which we live, and the laws and forces by which it operates. There is little point to understanding unless appreciation follows and appreciation without understanding is impossible. It has been a pleasure and privilege to work with the faculty and students this year. May this book always help to recall pleasant and satisfying memories of your days at Ll-IS.
