You'll want to remember that first Prom, that football game you cried at, and that base- ball game we won when no one thought we could. You'll want those simple classroom memories to stick around, too. You'll want to remember every little thing, but you won’t. You’ll wish you had a door which you could open up to see it all again. Our hope is that this 1972 Winneshiek will give you such a door to your high school past. In the future when you open this door, you'll remeet those old friends, relive those happy moments, and rewalk those noisy halls which made your three years at Logan one’s which you’ll never want to forget and probably never will. The 1971 Logan Baseball Team, coached by Mr. Bill Leonard, may have had one of the most thrilling seasons ever experienced by a coach or athlete at Logan High School. The regular season of play ended with a dismal 4-7 record. However, when the state baseball tourna- ment play began, Logan put all their talents and skills together to build a team that would become the W.I.A.A. State Baseball Champs. Logan opened the district tournament by defeating the cross-town rival Central. They went on to overcome Westby and Cashton at the regionals. A smashing vic- tory over Ithaca and Sauk Prairie at the sectionals en- abled Logan to go on to the State Baseball Tournament at Marion, Wisconsin. Pete Kohnert pitched an outstanding game at the opening tournament to overpower Chetek 8-0. When Logan was behind 8-3 in the last of the 7th inning against Beloit Memorial, the impossible was accom- plished when Logan defeated Beloit. La Crosse Logan then became W.I.A.A. State Champs 1971 when they overpowered Chippewa Falls in the final game. i Row 1: Asst. The 1971 Logan track team, coached by Mr. Ron Johnson, was highlighted by a 4-1 duel record. The team took first-place victories at the Logan and Waukon Invitationals to bring home the first trophies since 1937 for the track team. The team finished off the year by placing fourth in the Big Rivers Confer- ence. Eight team members represented Logan at the sectional meet. Gary Schmuck and Joel Roland dem- onstrated outstanding performances throughout the season. Schmuck set a new shot put record with a distance of 53 ft., 6 inches. He also set a new team record by scoring the most points, 16734, by any in- dividual trackman. Roland was second in scoring with 107 points and was the top man in the hurdles. The team captains for the year were seniors: Joel Roland, Gary Schmuck, Bruce Melby, Greg Watson, and Harry Helfrich. + = ae © a ? va oS = L-R: Tim Sandau, Jim Stuhr, Rod Rohrer, Paul Bogie, Curt Borsheim, Tom Hafner, Mark Stuhr, Larry Bakko, Wilder, Coach Joe Thienes. THE ARK IS HERE TO STAY Pride, Poise, and Execution: these words were the keys that were necessary to achieve the two goals set by the 1971 Logan Rangers. The goals set at the outset of the season were to be first: city champs, and second: conference champs. Only half of the goals were reached; a city championship was won with great honors brought to Logan. Although they failed to achieve the second goal, the Rangers made their presence known on the gridiron. The Rangers were never outhit by any of their opponents, even though lag mistakes led to close Logan losses. The Rangers of 1971 gained great respect from their rivals and the Logan Coaching Staff. 1971 was rewarding and disappointing but most of all great strides were made in building Pride, Poise, and Execution while enjoying the great game of football. 12 Winning is fun! They demonstrated this by bringing home four trophies and coming just inches away from representing Logan in the state meet. Dave Loomis proved to be the top runner by turning excellent times throughout the season, but it was a total team effort that gave the Harriers their balance to win. The Harriers, hold- ing down Sth and 6th spots all year, were ranked in the top ten in state ratings. Coach Erickson was honored by his team with a plaque as a token of their respect and admiration for the many hours of dedication he put into the Cross Country season. ae all peat cK = Battle for the ball. Just a little teamwork. RANGERS ON THE MOVE ed stop all. Right in there, Paul. The 1971-72 Logan basketball team was evidence of the saying: ‘Statistics don’t tell the score.” Statistically, the Rangers didn’t win a game in their first 16 outings. Despite all the bad luck and the disappointments, the Rangers maintained their pride and desire to win. Through thick and thin, the Logan fans gave their spirited support to the team. ‘The starting five players consisted of | senior, 2 juniors, and 2 sophomores. Senior Kenne Happel led the team in scoring. Although 67” Carl Viner missed 5 games of the season, he still ranked second in team scoring. Pete Weber and Paul Hauser as well as Curt Mosher and Steve Kremer are the returning lettermen. The Rangers, coached by Bill Leonard, are looking forward to a winning season next year. The team has improved their duel match record from only 2 wins from the previous year to over a 500 mark record this season. Bill Poellinger, 138 pound wrestler, was undefeated in conference matches with a record of 6-0-1. Steve Melcher at 165 pounds and Ron Symicek at 112 pounds both won first place at the La Crosse State Invitational. Dave Loomis holds the record for the fastest pin, which took place in 31 seconds. The team, led by Captains Gary Kaiser and Ron Symicek, had a trademark of pride, which will be carried over to the next wrestling season by Coach Fred Antonneau and the returning grapplers. ss a ™ Se te. cg Wrestling Pep Band. Gyrations Prom royalty takes a walk. 88 A view from above. Prom for the seniors is beautiful, but for the Juniors it is a lot of hard work. Many things have to be done in preparation. Ordering the various items such as invitations, memory books, and all decorations are just a few of their tasks. “You'll Never Walk Alone” was the theme of Prom °71. The decorative motif was a beautiful park with many colorful flowers. The main attraction of the night was the coronation and the Grand March. King Joel Roland and Queen Candy Butzman led the March. Smile pretty, girls. Colorful trees and the chill of the air with the excitement of football games bring to mind the season of fall. Thus, “Color My World” was chosen as the 1971 Homecoming Theme. Homecoming night began with the parade which was followed by the football game. Even though we lost this game, the team, never losing their spirit, fought hard from beginning to end. The night ended with the Homecoming dance where Mary Latshaw, escorted by Bob Stein, was crowned Queen of the fes- tivities. These happy memories remain forever. HOMECOMING ’71 Happiness is... . Guess who? 94 TWIRP IN 72 “You are Everything’’ set the theme for TWIRP week of February 7-12, 1972. Chivalry was reversed, as the girls ceded to the demands of their dates. The girls set the week’s activities in motion by displaying the name of their date on a tag. This was followed by “sweater day” at which time the girls wore one of their date’s sweaters. The girls demonstrated their creativity by making decorative goodie bags for their dates as well as matching garters. The hands of time were set back when the girls displayed a baby picture of their date. The week’s activities culminated in a dance to which the girls escorted their dates. As an added highlight to the evening, a TWIRP court was chosen randomly from name tags in a barrel. After an evening of music and dance, the girls treated their dates to dinner. GEEE CLUB Mr. Lloyd Mieden has again displayed his talent for directing music through this year’s vocal music department. They not only put on the usual Christmas Spring concert but also, through their combined effort and hardwork, produced the famous Broadway Musical ‘‘Oklahoma”’. Vocal groups were very active during the holiday season. The Choir performed at the Ecumenical Service at Viterbo along with 13 other area choirs and at the Baccalureate Service for Graduation. The Redjackets sang on invitation, at city functions. The Choir again enjoyed their trip to Minneapolis for the Ice Capades. It was a very successful year. The Color Guard not only presents the colors at games and marches with the band in the parades, but they also compete with area color guards. Color Guard competitions are judged by competent judges who take off points for being out of step, out of place, or for dropping equipment. On the other hand, groups receive points for order, effects, timing and flagwork. Because of a lack of sufficient complaints, the Student Council has seen limited action this year. The Council Presi- dent is one of the few people to speak at the Graduation exercises in the spring.
