No matter what season of the year it may be, our c o u l e e region with its bluffs and rivers has a strong appeal for those who admire the glories of nature. During the Christmas season the council placed a Christmas tree in the auditorium to help emphasize the holiday spirit. One of the main projects of the year is the prom which is sponsored by the Student Council. With the help of the art department they decorate the gym to match a theme chosen by the council. At every sports' event the Student Coun- cil operates the concession stand to raise money for their treasury. The council uses their finances for the benefit of the school. This year the Student Council presented the publications' department with a new Polaroid- Land Camera. This year a student directory was pub- lished for the student body. This book was edited by Mary Hetland and Jean Main. It lists the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of the student body and the faculty This spring the Student Council held its Sr. High Representative Bill Martin election for new officers. The school is divided into two parties, the Federalist and the Nationalist, each has a campaign man- ager, who, with the aid of a chosen staff, put on a half-hour campaign show in an assembly. Mary Hetland, Neil Duresky, Torn Knutson, and Vicki Italiano look at the new Polaroid camera the Student Council bought for the publications' staff. Room 301 is cluttered with paper, reporters, and the four co-editors. The rush and confu- sion can mean only one thing-a LOG is coming out this week. These energetic stu- dents buzzing around the small cubicle called the Pub are the ones, who, throughout the year, faithfully provide the student body with eight newspapers full of news, sports and gos- sip. The LOG serves as a monthly chronicle that can be used for future reference by stu- dents and teachers. A member of the LOG staff is given an opportunity to show his abilities in the field of journalism. About forty students are serv- ing on the staff this year. The club's main purposes are to back the school's athletic teams and promote good sportsmanship. They have a special section reserved at basketball games, so that they may lead the rest of the student body in cheering. The members of the Pep Club put on skits for the pep assemblies. This year's skits included everything from a dancing horse act to a take-off of Gunsmoke with Mar- shal Haugen and Chester Fendt. These heroes stopped the Red Raiders from stealing the Ark of Victory from Loganville. The main activity of the year is the Fall Festival which is co-sponsored with the Stu- dent Council. Pat Reagles, the i959 Fall Festival Queen, was crowned by King Earl Jensen. Members of the l959 Court were: Barb Dent and Chuck Rodell, Sandy Jenks and John La Fleur, Gloria Mase and Bill Martin, Marilyn Otto and Bob Soller, Linda Taylor and Jim Allen, Colleen West and Darrell Washburn. The Pep Club also engages in several money making activities. Logan pins were sold during Fall Festival Week, dances were sponsored after games, a carwash was held in the spring, and buses to out-of-town games were sponsored. Officers this year were: president, Mary Munson, vice-president, Cindy Hastings, sec- retary, Barb Pierce, and co-program chairman, Karen Johnson and Karen Jensen. Mrs. M. Book Binders Throughout each day of the school year, the unsung heroines of the Library Club go about their work, quietly and efficiently, to make the library a better place in which to work. Quiet is the password the girLs em- ploy as they check and prepare books for circulation, take inventory, and check peri- odicals. The girls are also responsible for keeping the library clean and orderly. The little things which students take for granted are performed daily by these girls who assume these responsibilities of an active library. Parties are held for special occasions such as,Halloween and Christmas. The li- brary is decorated appropriately for each holiday. During the Christmas season the library has the honor of possessing the only Christmas tree allowed in school. Each year a Christmas tea is given for all of the teachers. At the end of the year, the graduating seniors hold their last meeting by going out to eat at a local restaurant. A picnic in the spring is the last social activity of the club. Those girls who have earned enough service points receive an award at a candle- light ceremony. Only the seniors receive pin guards, a special honor reserved for them. These are only a few of the many activities that the girls in the Girls' Athletic Association enjoy throughout the school year. Bowling was the major sport during the winter months. Great interest centered around the championship team, the Little Space Girls. Other teams included the Starlighters, Space Setters, Sunrays, The Martines, Moonglows, Moongliders, and Skyliners. A fun night was held at the beginning of the year for the new members. Individual sports and team sports were planned by a com- mittee and refreshments were served later in the evening. A mixed-fun night is being planned for the spring. Each year delegates are selected to par- ticipate in the La Crosse State ColIege's Play Day which is held in the spring. Who sets up the chairs on the stage for the award assemblies? The stage crew knows these and other answers pertaining to Logan. Just ask Milt Tyler, George Jolivette, and Wayne Wheeler, or John Yehle. These boys have to know when to lower the lights for special effect. When you see a spotlight on a certain person or group on the stage, you know that the busy stage crew is at work again. These boys put long hours in on con- structing and painting scenery. They make up a behind-the-scene crew that is definitely a must for any performance given on the stage at Logan Senior High School. Mr. Gene Renslow is their advisor. The sound crew is the organization that keeps the scoreboard clocks, microphones, and other sound equipment in working con- dition. This crew consists of boys who are never found in the spotlight, and yet contribute to the success of many of our school's activities The boys set up microphones for all assem- blies. Awards are received for the services rendered in one year. Only one letter is given to each boy. Boys giving more than one year of service may receive a gold micro phone pin to place on his letter. These are the three goals of Y-Teens. The Y-Teens are iunior members of the Y.W.C.A., and many of their activities are closely associated with that organization. This year the Y-Teens had a very active Inter-Club Council. This club consists of the officers of all the Y-Teen clubs in the city. They sponsored a Coke and Chip Party at the Y.W.C.A. for World Fellowship Day. A Christmas Choir was formed consisting of all Y-Teens in the city. They practiced diligently, and sang at the Hanging of the Greens and at various homes in the city. The Logan Senior High Club, itself, is one of the most active clubs in the school. This is a service organization so the program is varied and interesting. During the year the Y-Teens help the Community Chest, the Y.W. C.A., and also give a program at the County Infirmary. To highlight their social activities, the girls sponsored a Valentine Formal, which was held on February 6. The girls planned and decorated the gym themselves. The theme was chosen by the club. To raise money the club sponsored a dance after the Logan-Cen- tral basketball game. Historian Pat Reagles Eight girls were sent to Lake Gilbert, Camp Talaki, for the annual summer confer- ence. Those are the passwords of the Logan Senior High School marching band. Bright red uniforms with white trim dot the football field as the band goes through its paces at home football games. The biggest halftime ceremony is at the Fall Festival where they lead the Fall Festival Parade and provide music at halftime for the queen and her court. Basketball season finds one part of the band working hard at preparing assemblies and playing at some games. This group is call- ed the Pep Band. Because Logon was the host for the Sec- tional Basketball tournaments this year, the band had plenty of work to do in preparation for their appearances at the games. The Logan Band doesn't play just marches and peppy pieces. Once every year they give a concert performance in the annual Spring Soncert. Memorial Day is another busy day for the band. They play in uniform for the yearly Memorial Day Assembly and add the color and pomp necessary to make the assembly a success. The band is under the direction of Mr. Loyd Meiden. Here comes the band! Battling Bruisers Logan, a quite young and inexperienced team, wrapped up the '59 season with three wins and five losses, The Rangers matched wits with several powerful grid teams. With a spirit of fight and determination, they came through fairly well. Five foot eleven inch, one hundred and eighty pound Dale Conrad, led the scoring attack with 38 points. Dale, a junior, also made the All-City First Team, a- long with Co-Captains Earl Jensen and Bob Soller. Jensen, a six foot two inch, two hundred and five pound three year letter winner with an educated toe, booted 33 conversions and intercepted 3 passes from his line-backer slot. Bob Soller, a six foot one inch, two hun- dred and ten pound and an alert, aggressive leader in the line, provided the spark needed for a strong defense. Soller was also voted most valuable player by his teammates, Big Darrell Washburn, a senior, was also a three year letter winner. Two-year award winners included se- niors: Chuck Rodell, Loren Wardwell, Bill Martin, John La Fleur and Jim Beranek. Four of the Ramblers' touchdowns came in the first half, but they were held to one in the second half. Logan's lone tally came from a l4 yard scamper by Dale Conrad. LOGAN 2l -RICHLAND CENTER 6 Within five minuts of the second period of this game, Logan exploded for three touch- downs and conversions. The Hornets dominat- ed the first quarter of play and in that time received their only points. Touchdowns by the Rangers were made by Conrad and Nibbe. LOGAN O -WINONA 32 On a sloppy, rain splattered field Logan gridders just couldn't move the pigskin and were defeated by Winona 32-O. Roger Leon- hardt of Winona led the Winhawk attack with 3 TD's. Logan fumbled the ball away six times and were plagued by slippery footing. Chuck Rodell loses one Aquinas player and prepares for the next two. LOGAN 0-EAU CLAIRE 13 An improved Logan team contained Eau Claire's speedy attack through most of the game but lost on two blocked punts and two short touchdown drives. They lacked scoring pgtcgntial and the Old Abes came out on top l - . LOGAN O -AQUINAS l8 Hard-tackling Logan players held high- scaring Aquinas to a disputed I8 points after the Blue-Golds beat Central earlier in the season 47-7. The Rangers gave the cross-town rivals a beating on defense but might have won with a more effective offense. LOGAN I3 - MENOMONIE 20 Pat Korish provided two tallies which just weren't enough to stop the determ-ined fullback, Bob Schroeder, from Menomonie, who scored three times and gained l70 yards rushing. Earl Jensen provided an extra point for Logan. LOGAN I9- CENTRAL O Logan retrieved the Ark of Victory bring- ing it home for the third straight year as they defeated Central in a mud-bath in a never-to- be-forgotten win of 19-O. Touchdowns were tallied by the work-horse, Dale Conrad, who made two. Lineman Fred Abraham recovered a Central fumble in the end zone to clinch the victory. LOGAN 41-COTTER 6 In the last tilt of the season, Logan showed real power and defeated the Cotter team 41-6. Jim Beranek, Tom Nibbe and Chuck Rodell were the stars of the game. The Logan line operated like a machine. Touchdowns were scored by Beranek who had three, Dale Conrad, Chuck Rodell, and Don Henthorn. Earl Jensen had a fine day scoring four extra points. Cheerleaders The fondest dream of every junior cheer- leader is to join the senior cheerleading squad. With this goal in mind, she tries to im- prove her knowledge of cheers by practicing at least once a week. Participation in a cheerleading clinic and membership in the pep club is required before a candidate is eligible to become a cheerleader. The senior cheerleaders con- duct the clinic to pick junior cheerleaders for the basketball season The girls must set an example for the student body by promoting good sportsmanship. Besides cheering at basketball and foot- ball home games, the leaders try to attend as many out-of-town games as possible. They also lead cheers in the pep assemblies. This year the familiar red satin slacks and white jackets were laid aside and new red slacks, white jackets, and white tennis shoes took their place. There are six senior cheerleaders this year. Linda Taylor and Marilyn Otto, seniors, Nancy Jenks, Judy Schwinefus and Gail Ward- well, juniors, and Judy Hendrickson, a sopho- more. Mrs. Martin is advisor of the girls, JR. Club is a select group of boys who have won one or more letters in a varsity sport. To earn a letter, a boy must participate in one of the varsity sports, for a certain num- ber of games. He must be morally as well as physically fit. He must have a high scholastic standing and participate in other extra-curri- cular activities. There are no dues, no officers, and have no required functions. Volunteers from the L.C. Club usher at basketball games, take tickets and sweep floors at halftime dur- ing basketball games. The letters were award- ed at an organizational meeting of the newly formed Booster Club. Coach Marsh Haugen gives Earl Jensen and Bob Soller their football letters at a Booster Club meeting. Cagey Cagers Coach Rodney Martin, who, in fourteen years of coaching Logan cagers, has guided four teams to state tournament berths, retired from active coaching at the close of this sea- son. Statistic-wise his winning average of almost 700W is tops in the state of Wiscon- sin. He has won 220 games in fourteen years, while losing only 98, His best season was the l958-59 season, when he won 26 out of 28 games. The loss of Coach Martin will be felt by all Loganites, past and present. This year's team was far from Mr. Mar- tin's best, winning 3 while dropping fifteen. Earl Jensen led the team in scoring followed by Bill Martin, Don lBones7 Henthorn, Ted Paulson, Ken Barker, and Tom Nibbe. ln this year's tour-nament Logan was up- set in the first game by a scrappy Arcadia team. They dropped the consolation game to our cross-town rival, Central, 77-78, when Jim Kiem's last second desperation shot bounced off the rim. High scorer Earl Jensen picks up two more points. Intrepid Nine Mr. William Towner's first year as head coach of the Ranger baseball team proved to be a very successful one. The team won eight of its twelve games and was able to avenge all of its losses. Wayne Hauser led the pitching attack with five wins and no defeats. He helped his cause with three home runs, two doubles, and nine runs batted in. Jim Longway followed him in the win column with three victories and two defeats. Bob Severson, La Verne Grimslid and Frank Freismuth served as relief pitchers. Kenny Barker, the sophomore third sacker, led the Ranger in triples. He also had two doubles and batted in l4 runs. He McCann coaches as Tom Griswold runs the bases. finished the season with a batting average of .400. Barker was closely followed by Larson, who batted to the tune of .36O. Ed Gilbert- son was close behind with an average of .357. Houser's .333 average and Sever- son's .302 average completed the .300 hitters on the roster. The man with the most stolen bases was Severson with six. He also garnered two home runs and a triple. Jack Weber had five stolen bases, two home runs and two doubles. Record The fabulous Logan cindermen of '59 continually broke school, Memorial Field, and city records. Ron Butzman headed this tre- mendous trio by winning the 100 yd. dash at the state meet in 10 sec. flat. His best time was in the sectional which he ran in a sizzling .09.9 setting a new city record. At the Madi- son West Relays, Bootie broke the record in the 70 yd. hurdles and tied the existing mark in the 60 yd. dash. His .09.9 in the hun- dred and 21.8 in the 220 erased school and city marks. Dave Smith headed the weight deport- ment by shattering school and city records with a heave of 51' 8W'. He had to break teammate Earl Jensen's mark set earlier in the same meet of 49' 9 which was also a city and school record. Earl Jensen was all by himself in most of the meets in the discus throw. He established new records for Logon and the city with a toss of 143' 9 . Orby Moss soared to a new height in the pole vault of 10' l1 . This is a new school mark. Other boys with fine performances. were Joel Urban, Charley Goyette, Fred Abraham, and Jim Beranek in the 440 yd. dash, Dennis Richmond and Bob Tooley in the mile, Jerry Hanson, Loren Wardwell, and Ralph Hembd in the discus, lHanson and Wardwell were very good shot putters alsol Ronnie Ziebell and Jim Keim in the 880, Moss, John Strehl, Revisers Tom Nibbe, Art Weinke, and Goyette in the sprints and relays, Hanson, Rich Schrader, and Joel Urban in the high-lump, John La Fleur, Richmond, and Moss in the pole-vault, Craig Loomis, Robert Slaback, Beranek, Weinke, and Moss in the hurdles, Beranek, Slaback, a-nd Butzman in the broad-jump. Graduation took quite ci few boys from this year's team which had kept intact the dual meet record and extended it to four un- beaten years. Other team members from this year's squad which will be counted on to fill the grad- uation losses are: Pete Smith, Art Ingalls, Dan Schaller, Don Howard, Rich Rebhan, Dale Conrad, Ronnie Evenson, Dave Jensen, Neil Duresky, Jim Anderson, John Yehle, Bob El- lis, Ron Sommerfeldt, and Darel Hegy. Like the golf squad, the tennis team also needs a specially constructed place on which to play. Unfortunately the Logan team lost its own courts when the new Logan Jun- ior High School was built on that site. This necessitated a trip to Copeland Park or the Onalaska tennis courts each time the team wanted to practice, and when they served as the host school for matches. Despite this disadvantage, the '59 Logan tennis team had a fine season under the able and experienced coaching of Mr. Earl Kolcin- ski. They won 7 of their 9 matches in l959. They were successful against Winona, Eau Claire, Viroqua, Onalaska, and lost only to Central. The spring of '59, after the heavy snow- fall of the winter, made it difficult for the team to get in sufficient practice before the actual beginning of the season, so their excel- lent record was quite remarkable. The l96O team will feel the loss of four senior letter winners, Tony Krueger, Steve Fossum, Al Mac Gregor and Gary Thompson. Coach Kolcinski will have to build this year's squad around three returning veteran letter- winners, Ted Paulson, Bob Kuehl, and Stan Johnson. Hard practice is needed every spring to bring the boys to tournament condition. lt is expected that the '60 team with its three returning lettermen will prove to be a very fine one. LJ M-qu Standing: Bill Rinartz, Gary Lubinsky, Harold Miller, Jerry Nelson, and Tom Knutson. Kneeling: Gary Johnson, Harvy Ott, and Dave Horton. Green Greats One of the smallest squads in the organ- ized sports' program is the golf team. Since individual plays individual, the actual play- ing squad is made up of just five members. Good weather and an available course are game necessities. The Logan team prac- ticed and played all home matches on the La Crosse Country Club course. The l959 spring weather was a real obstacle to this squad, the hard winter gave the team a late start. The team won six of their fifteen '59 season matches. Winona Cotter, Richland Center, Viroqua, and Gale-Ettrick were de- feated by Coach Marsh Haugen's team. This was Mr. Haugen's first year as golf coach. Lack of depth was the reason for mast of the team's losses. The team was defeated by Winona, Eau Claire, Central, and Aquinas. Two outstanding Logan golfers and con- sistent winners, Gary lButchl Johnson and Harvey Ott, turned in low score cards, Both boys shot in the low seventies. Dave Horton, Gary Lubinsky, Bill Rinartz, Jerry Nelson, and Harold Miller were the other senior members of the squad. The underclassman was Tom Knutson. While the season's record was not pleas- ing to the team, some exciting matches were played. Sparkling bits of play made the in- dividuals aware of their potential and kept them interested in a sport in which they can participate for the rest of their lives, Tom Knutson prepares for next year X , ,W Row Three: Bob Dobbs, Bill Stockers, Gary Paul, Donny Schaller, Terry Kellicut. Agile Artists An ambitious group of young men make up the tumbling squad at Logan. lf they are not practicing at Logan, there is a good chance they are at La Crosse State College working out on their equipment. This year the tumb- lers have the added advantage of a Trampo- line which was loaned to them by the Marines. The tumblers put on a number of per- formances during half-time at basketball games and in assemblies. The tumbling squad is under the direc- tion of Mr. A. Aarstad.
