High school is now finished For the seniors, they're through With books and those studies, And fun and friendships, too. Now they're making ready To go out all alone lnto a different world, From what they've always known. Underclassmen, the crew, Went on this ride to seo, Each year they make the trip For they're seniors to be. Then came the pleasure cruise - All those activities, To bring more enioyment During the hours of ease. With sports came stormy seas, But oh, the ioy they brought! The fun and thrill of them, The sportsmanship they taught! Showboat then came in sight And soothed the rolling sea, With music every day -- That practiced Harmony And brought back smooth sailing, With thoughts of all the fun At parties and the prom - - And iourney almost done. At times along the way There'd be a snap or two, To mount upon a page ln everybody's view. This year's trip is over, lt soon will fade and die, This book will be a place To let our memories lie. Only six of the present crew members of the Class of 1955 spent all twelve years on the good ship. They are Jane Harvey, Maxine Haszard, Marcella Kersten, Eugene Peterson, Har- old Powers, and Lorraine Woodard. Graduating from eighth grade, where they were piloted by Vergil Wolf and Helen Adams, were Joan Birks, Lowell Clark, Wayne Ekren, Mariorie Finley, Vonda Fountain, Jane Harvey, Maxine Haszard, Marcella Kersten, Gale Muxfeldt, Larry Pitt, Eugene Peterson, Harold Powers, Carol Storey, Wilma Straight, and Lorraine Woodard. K After sailing other seas for eight years, Francis Archer, Ocle Archer, Derrell Bradley, Lorraine Col- lins, Robert Daigh, Lloyd Dickinson, Fred Divel- bess, James Grundmeier, Harold Kierscht, Elaine Michael, Betty Obrecht, Gary Pitt, Gloria Pitt, Vera Pitt, Bonnie Poole, Rosemary Rief, Jack Smith, Mary Stephens, Joyce Thompson, and Dean Van Cleave came aboard the USS Logan in September, 1951. After experiencing both fun and hardships dur- ing the freshman cruise, the crew set sail for their sophomore year, with Betty Barrier from Woodbine ioining the group. This was the year our dear class- mate, Vonda Fountain, was fatally iniured in an automobile accident. Near the end of the tenth year, Mariorie Finley, Robert Daigh, Betty Obrecht, Fred Divelbess, Lor- raine Collins, Eugene Peterson, Harold Kierscht, .loan Birks, Gary Pitt, Wilma Straight, Gale Mux- feldt, and Jane Harvey were chosen to serve at the Mardi Gras Banquet. As the iourney's eleventh lap was begun, Elaine Myer joined the crew. The sea was becoming a bit rough with the additional extra-curricular activi- ties, namely, magazine sales and the prom, Mexican Fiesta. For the first time, an all-night celebration including a banquet, dance, midnight show, and breakfast was planned for high school students and their guests. During the concluding iourney, the senior year, Joan Shelton ioined as the latest recruit. High- lighting this trip were such events as the Christ- mas party, class play, Prize Pigs , and choosing the class gowns, colors, flower, and motto. Gowns were chosen with blue for the boys and white for the girls with white and blue carnations, respec- tively. The choices of dusty rose and silver as class colors and Onward ever, backward never as the motto also were made. Officers for the final year were Mcriorie Fin- ley, secretary, Elaine Myer, vice president, Lor- raine Collins, president, and Joan Birks, treasurer, with C. W. Morford and Donald Hanson as sponsors. The Class of 1955 would like to express its ap- preciation for the help of the instructors O. L. Mor- gan, C. E. Matthews, Bob Evans, John Black, Gar- reth McDonald, Dorothy McDonald, Mildred Ryan, Bernice Bobenhouse, Margaret Leeney, Robert Ball, James Hayes, Valborg Keay, Shirley McCann, Mar- garet Johnson, C. W. Morford, Donald Hanson, Janice Yoerger, Polly Munson, Ray Gunn, and Wil- liam McMahon who have contributed to the com- pletion of a successful iourney. Magi , . A . Mexican hats, invitations, napkins and bright crepe paper runners help to create the fes- tive atmosphere. :Setting fha .cfldoocfu gunioz-genial ,QDZOITZ One of the fondest school memories always is that of prom time and the l954 Junior-Sen- ior Prom was no exception. The Mexican theme was carried out with a stone wall around the gym forming a garden behind which hung rows of pink, blue, yellow, and white carnations. Crepe paper vines dropped along the walls and gay streamers twisted their way across the ceil- ing to the sombrero hanging over the center of the floor. Howard Harter, Bar- bara Dinkel, Stanley Weed, Delores Dakan, Nile Muxfeldt, Louise Divelbess, Jon Jacob son, Bonita Thomas! Larry Charleson, Jul lene Olson, Ronin Barney, and Sharon Oviatt not only very capably served thebanv quet, but also present- ed an entertaining hat dance. ggzaasfzfing kgs .Queen Homecoming is one of the most exciting events of the school year. The question of who the cpeen will be is asked weeks be- fore the big moment. On the evening that Logan defeated Onawa 6-0, Lorraine Col- lins was presented as Homecoming Queen of 1954. As her attendants, Elaine Myer and Marcella Karsten looked on while Gale Mux- feldt, captain of the football team, crowned the qieen. Pauline Stentz, Homecoming Queen of 1953, presented each girl with a beautiful bouquet. That afternoon the homecoming parade of high school floats made its usual way to the city park. At the pep meeting the three winning floats were presented with trophies. The FHA float was chosen as being the out- standing one of the parade. Second place went to the sophomores' graveyard scene. Prediction that the game would be a cinch for Logan was the theme of the float which won third prize for the freshmen. KING and QUEEN Delores Dakan a n d Howard Harter Uuniorsl ROYAL RUCKUS CARNIVAL Attendants: Connie Leonard and Larry Hendrix, freshmen, Karen Clark and Donald Daigh, sophomores, Marcella Kersten and Fred Divelbess, seniors, Sandra Gochenour and Jerry Michael, iunior high. The carnival was quite successful due to the efforts of the sponsors, the PMA and the Ath- letic Association, and the cooperation of the entire student body. The future seems to be a big question to many students at the carnival. Tight-rope walker, Bonita Thomas, and clowns, Larry Charleson and Gary Pitt, are struggling to achieve a great feat. .1 ' 1 1'i'+ !a - -- -- lm i immn it -i- If Aer 2-. When Phyllis Cooper and Joyce Fountain begin their spring house cleaning, they find that lockers have a certain knack for becoming too full. Jane Harvey, winner of the District free-throw contest and participant in the State contest, is a famil- iar sight on the free-throw line. Joan Shelton is all alone in the advanced bookkeeping and clerical office classes. To be or not to be is the question as Jane Harvey, Vera Pitt, Betty Barrier, Maxine Haszard and Lor, raine Woodard work on the senior class float. Joe Potter, Stanley Weed, Dean Van Cleave, Eugene Peterson, and Howard Harter make a lively- look- ing group of fellows. Future Hollywood prospects working on the senior class play are Lorraine Collins, Jane Harvey, Vera Pitt, Joan Birks, James Grundmeier, Fred Divelbess, Elaine Myer, Joan Shelton, Gloria Pitt, Harold Kierscht, Harold Powers, and Mariorie Finley. Who's getting the assistance here--Gary Hansen or Harold Kierscht? Studying the highways and byways of Logan are Gwen Jackson, Theo Jacobs, Shirley McHugh, Alvin Clark, and Douglas Rief. Ocle Archer, a necessity to the Echo production staff, is hard at work lettering. WORKING IN THE GALLEY Cooking aboard the USS Logan keeps Vera Rains and Doll Gallaher on a busy schedule. NAVIGATING FOR THE USS LOGAN Bus drivers--Clyde Harrocl, Allan Tufly, Ken- neth Fitch, and John Heim--share the re- sponsibility of deliver- ing the ship's crew.
