This year's Junior Class has proudly and skillfully accepted its new responsibili- ties at L.H.S. Their president and vice- president, Ron and Don Taylor, have the distinction of being the only twin officers in the school. The class has proven its ability by participating in many activities including a homecoming float, a very successful class play, and presenting the Junior-Senior Prom. Scholastically the Junior Class leads the school, its members appearing more frequently on the honor roll than those of any other class. The juniors are look- ing forward to being the leaders of the school next year as well as leading citi- zens of tomorrow. , t Fw 'ff ' 'f7?fr. uv- Ii , .I ww . .gas if: Juniors mournfully prepare to bury Oceana at the Home- coming game. The Council's purpose is to create better relationships in our school and promote better understanding with other schools. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Freddie White, the Council has col- lected food, money, and clothing for underprivileged children, made posters to boost student support of the teams, acted as guides for College Day, and sold pens with the school emblem en- graved on them. A basketball game be- tween the G.A.A. and the Men Teacher All-Stars and a clean-up week were also sponsored by the Council. This spring a dance and hayride are planned for mem- bers and their friends. Council members pose for camera before entering Homecoming Parade. BASKETBALL A D TRACK 0 R BOYS HAVE A K ACK. 123 Sweep basketball sectional, baseball regional. Wlildcats play at many sports, but put their hearts and souls into playing and cheering football, basketball, track and baseball. Logan's sport season opened with a thrilling but heartbreaking foot- ball game when Logan dropped a close one. Although plagued by injuries and that unpredictable flu bug, the Wild- cats made a good showing and ended the season with five wills and five losses. Outstanding on the gridiron this year were: Fred Wagner, Orville Fleming, John Calandros, john W'hitman, Autie Ratlilf, Fred Colvard, Jerry Shelton, Lloyd Dempsey and George Frantz. Most of these are seniors and will be missed next year. The basketball season in- cluded a lively intramural tournament with eight teams in hot competition. In addition to the regular basketball sea- son, the Junior Varsity turned in an enviable record. The Varsity team won the sectional tournament by defeating a fine Chapmanville team and lost in the regional by a fluke. Foxie Hanners was the stellar attraction at this time. Baseball season was rained out to a certain extent, but Logan won the sec- tional tournament by defeating Man, 6-4. The Wlildcats went on to beat Hunt- ington High., 2-1, for the regional crown, and were scheduled to play in the state finals at Parkersburg at the end of May. Altogether the Wilclcats made athletic history during the year 1957-1953. This boy isn't going to be stopped. Everyone wants the bull. Logan Higla School Wildcats get of to slow start. LOGAN 6 STONEWALL JACKSON 13 With a good attendance backing them the Logan lligh Wiltl1'uts invaded Stonewall at Charleston for the big opener of the season. Logan fought the powerful Generals hard all the way, but they just couldn't seem to find the right spark. The Wildcats scored first in the second period, marching 55 yards. Or- ville Fleming wcnt the final nine yards off tackle for the only touchdown for Logan. Logan held Stonewall 6-6 until the final four minutes of the game when the Generals scored once more to end a hard fought game at 13-6. LOGAN 48 OCEANA 0 The 1957 Homecoming was highlighted on September 27 with a brilliant display of of- fensive and defensive play as the Logan Wild- cats romped to a 48-0 victory over the In- dians from Oceana. Logan's Orville Fleming led the scoring attack with two touchdowns. Six other members of the Wilflcats' team hit pay dirt as they crossed the goal line for scores. LOGAN 0 HUNTINGTON EAST 20 The Logan Wiltlcats lost their second game of the season when they bowed to the Hunt- ington East Highlanders during a game played at Midelburg Park. The Wildcats, sparked by the Soph. quarterback Fred Col- vard, Seniors Orville Fleming and John Ca- landros, played heads up ball, but could not keep the Highlanders from coming out on the top of a 20-0 score. lhc rlhrec duldc on an important play. With less than four min- utes to play in the second quarter Logan's John Whitman rounded left end from nine yards out for the initial score. Fred Colvard's placement split the uprights and the Wildcats led 7-0. The drive had started on the St. Albans' 38 when a Dragon aerial was inter- cepted by Logan end Jerry Shelton. However, the Dragons went on to score two touchdowns and kick one extra point. Logan- won the next game by topping Bar- boursville in a very thrilling and exciting contest. The game had the Logan fans on the edge of their seats the whole game. LOGAN 24 MADISON 8 The Wildcats evened their season at three and three at the expense of Scott Skyhawks of Madison. Fred Colvard scored Logan's first touchdown. in the second quarter after tackle Autie Ratliff blocked a Madison punt. Col- vard was trapped in the Logan end zone for Madison's first two points. In the second half Logan came alive and fullback John Whit- man scored three times from the 1-foot line, the 6-yard line, and from the 4-yard' line. Madison's only touchdown was scored by Paul Tawney on a 49-yard run down the sidelines. Also out for track were the boys who are going out for football next year. Coach Willis took the team to Beckley and Huntington.
