Current Events Tragedies One of the major tragedies was the wreck of Air Florida's Flight 90 to Tempo. The cotostrophe happened in Washington DC. There were 70 passengers aboard. The plane slammed into a crowded bridge, smoshed five cars and a truck, and then skidded into the frozen Potomoc River. Commuters watched os the plane sunk. The most heroic act performed wos by one of the passengers, o bolding mon in his early 50's. Each time the rescue ring wos lowered, he would give it to another person. When the helicopter wos finally reody to pick him up, he hod disappeared beneath the ice. Seventy-eight people died, including four motorists. One possible couse wos ice on the wings, which would ocr os o drag on the plane. Another big wreckage wos coused when the wolkwoy of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel collapsed. One hundred ond eleven people were killed. The big question wos how o year old structure could foil so enormously. Investigators soid it might take o year before they knew the cause. The wedding ond its pageantry gave Britain on opportunity to reaffirm the heritage that once mode it fhe most powerful country on earth. The money to support the Royol fomily comes largely from taxpayers. It costs 4 million o year just to maintain fhe royol yocht on which Prince Charles ond his bride spent their honeymoon. Thousands of souvenir peddlers fried to cosh in on fhe excitement surrounding fhe Royol Wedding. Among these wos o mug of the foce of Prince Charles. Erno Rubik invented the Rubik's Cube. The very first cube was mode crudely our of wood ond wos thought to be o masterpiece. A more polished cube wos soon pur on the marker. At first o cube cost about three dollars. Rubik first used his cube os o gome, o teaching oid, ond o sport, but it soon become o work of ort. Several books hove been published telling how to solve the cube, including You Con Do The Cube. Since then, many people hove learned the secret. Brigodier Generol Jomes Dozier Kidnappings A kidnapping is not always something that happens in another state or country. Four year old Donny Dovis was shopping in o supermarket in Salt Lake City with his grandfather when he disappeared one day. The police did on intensive search for him, bur he is yet to be found. Probably the most talked about kidnapping was that of U.S. Brig. General James Dozier. He was abducted by Italian terrorists, the Red Brigades, and held hostage for 42 days. Never before hod the Red Brigades abducted a non-Italian. The last time Italy's police rescued a kidnap victim olive was in 1975. The search included 6,000 Italian lawmen with help from American ond European anti-terrorists experts. They had the cover of a construction crew with a noisy bulldozer. There were 80 undercover policemen who guarded the streets. A ten-member rescue team came carrying M-12 light submachine guns. One blocked on exit, ond the rest sprinted up the twenty steps and overtook the terrorists who were holding Dozier hostage. The first request Dozier had was for a shave ond o crew cut. The only physical injuries he suffered were a bruise under his left eye, ond he lost 12 pounds. Assassinations ond attempts Anwar Sodat loved the pageantry of a military parade. He was certain of his troops loyalty. On October 6, 1981, the eighth anniversary of his surprise attack on Israel, a junior lieutenant stepped from a truck and walked toward him. Sadat rose, expecting o solute, instead, he tossed a grenade. Then a group of accomplices jumped from the truck, flinging grenades ond firing sub-machine guns. Sodot fell along with many others. Eyewitnesses saw only Sadat's personal bodyguards shoot bock at the attackers. But no armed guard stood between the assassins ond Sadat Sadat was rushed by helicopter nine miles to o Maodi military hospital. He had been struck five times by bullets ond shrapnel. A team of eleven doctors stood by. They could find no trace of pulse. There were no reflexes. He was pronounced deod. The assassination left the world without one of the few leaders whose personal couroge seemed to hove helped history. You con count on me. Sodot told Reagan lost August.
