School Hoppenings 21 When Lorry Comodeno srorred reoching or Logon High School in 1976, rhe ofhleric department weight room consisted of only one bench ond one universal. There wos o definite need for more equipment, bur because money wos tight, rhe coaches didn't know how they would get rhe weights. The school district recognized the need for more equipment. They donated some free weights to rhe deportment, bur even with those, there still weren't enough. Lorry Comodeno explained ‘Three seasons ogo o player named Jim Minkler wos injured in o football proctice ond wos porolyzed from rhe neck down. As I thought about how we could get money for rhe weight room. I got the idea of hoving o lift-o-rhon in Jim's name. So, I approached Jim about using his name for rhe lift o rhon ond he very willingly gave his permission. We then went oheod and set up the procedure for rhe Hft-o-rhon.” All 6th hour athletic students got pledges for the lifr-o-rhon. the minimum pledge being two cents a pound. Because the businesses and people in the community were so generous, the pledges were nor only two ond three cents a pound bur 20 ond 30 cents. Some people even pledged up to one dollar a pound. The liff o thon snowballed and after only three weeks rhe athletes hod raised $5,000 in cosh. The construction of the Jim Minkler Weight Room began. The local merchants donated the mirrors and rhe stereo. They also donated free labor for rhe building of rhe room. The school district helped out by buying rhe rubber floor in the room. In Moy of 1980, on open house was held ond rhe Jim Minkler Weight Room wos dedicated. Jim was present or rhe dedication ond wos reolly touched by the room” Comedeno continued. Now, because of the Jim Minkler Lift-A-Thon, rhe weight room values or over $20,000 ond with rhe exception of BYU, hos more free bor than ony school in the store. Logon High has o well recognized power-lifting program rhor helps to moke every athlete better. Both the boys’ ond girls athletic programs were able to benefit from the Jim Minkler Weight Room Athletic Students lift weights after school in preporotion for their vorious competitions. In the center of the weight room hongs this trophy in appreciation to Willing Sponsors
