With special abilities, our secretaries filled all the many duties required of them. At the end of another great year, an appropriate thank you almost seems inadequate for all they have done to make LHS a better place to be. Working hand in hand with the secretaries in associating with the student body, the counselors at LHS provided necessary information in choosing a career, helped establish a firm grip on one's future, and handled any dissatisfactions of class schedules. Truly they were quite remarkable. New classes introduced were mythology, public speaking, and competitive speech. English 10 remained an important part of sophomore basic essentials. They have also added a new literature book and additional films to their material. k 18 Faculty Kent Soderquist Art Loran Hirschi Auto Mechanics Dianne Hall Business Alene Hansen Business Peggy Christensen Business Robert McAllister Electronics Marketing has added depth to the Business Department this year. The class taught Marketing and Distribution with the career aim of management. All of the members of the two marketing classes belong to the DECA Chapter. Class members have done advertising campaigns, set up displays for local merchants, attended shoplifting clinics, arranged field trips to speciality area retail stores, and scheduled many guest speakers throughout the year. DECA sponsored a community dance at the Cache Valley Mall and sent students to DECA Western Regional Leadership Conference, and the State DECA Leadership Conference. BUSY is the word for DECA. Members and FUN is the by-product. Having experienced construction of a house, assembling radios, and repairing automobiles, students in the LHS Industrial Arts Department have been enriched by capable teachers who involved them in industry and on-the-job training. Dec Christensen Industrial Arts Faculty 19 xs r- Richard Bradford Mathematics, Physics Bobcttc Cardwell Mathematics In a world of the profound, the LHS Math Department maintained the ability to bewilder the average high schooler. With students from the perplexed to the triumphant, the teachers did their best to educate all pupils in mathematical mysteries. Mrs. Elich wrote a proposal for the use of calculators in math classes and received national funding for the program. Carlctta Elich Mathematics Roger Wilson Mathematics, Athletics 20 Faculty This year has been exciting for the LHS Social Studies department. Their curriculum was changed to quarter classes with the additon of new courses such as Law, Sociology, Consumer Education, and 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s and Futurism. Field trips included a visit to a small claims court, a local jail, a prison, and a mortuary. Students participated in comparative shopping and also rode with a policeman on duty. They organized and took part in a mock presidential election and scheduled discussions with a polygraph examiner and an F.B.l. agent. Due to popular demand, the Home Economics Department added more foods classes to their schedules and taught more co-ed sections of bachelor arts-homcliv-ing. The students in Child Development class had the unique experience of running a nursery school for eight weeks. Surprisingly enough, both teachers noted the large amount of boys in this formerly female field! A major change happened in the PE department this year due to Title IX. All the classes went to coed, with the exception of the 6th hour athletics classes. With a goal of keeping youthful bodies fit, the qualified teachers combined their efforts to teach from archery to ping-pong. The department has also been expanded to include a gymnastics team. Col. The orchestra, band, and choral departments have participated in competitions, concerts, and the muscial. New additions included Brent Taylor, orchestra conductor. Faculty 23 The Science Department made a few changes in the curriculum this year. Individualized chemistry lab experiments and availability of calculators to the physics classes, helped students better understand the subject. The Science Department continues to complete a specific need in the life of the I.HS student. The class, taught by Eliot Brunson, keeps photo students with either a camera around the neck or in hand almost every minute of the day. All the yearbook photographers are in a special class. Special thanks goes to the photographers who worked hard to complete this b x k. Thanks goes to Larry Comadena, a young rookie at LHS, who enriched the English department with his aid in the area of reading skills. The Alternate Learning Center and Armory proved valuable help to those students who attended. It was this year that the Instructional Media Center, under the direction of Max Cooley, started the enormous task of relocating and cataloging all the audio-visual materials into their new cabinets. Besides offering a wide variety of visual aids and other materials, the IMC provided a peaceful atmosphere for those who needed to study or for those who just wanted to relax. LIFE WITH FATHER By Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse Willing and Abel. Logan’s school play was presented January 17 and 18, with Eugene Tueller directing and Doug Larsen and Tamara I-aBeau as student directors. It was about a family of six, living in the 1800’s, who is visited by Cousin Cora and her friend Mary. Two major plots were involved. Plot 1 deals with the legitimacy of the parent’s, marriage, because father had never been baptized. Plot 2 was a conflict between Mary and Clarence, the son. They fell in love but the affair was doomed when Clarence started to act like father, which upset both Clarence and Mary. This year's varsity volleyball team, coahced by Miss Van Leeuwen and captained by Jcnni Taylor, finished the season with a 2-4 record. The J.V., whose captain was Beth Martinez, turned out a 1-4 season under Mrs. Hogan. The teams were relatively young and lost only four players to graduation, so they are anticipating a strong season next year. From row left to right. The LHS Girls’ Tennis under rookie coach Lana Hogan sent Patty Hymas, 1 singles player, to state where she placed fifth in the consolation category. The participants worked hard and had a good experience in the newly developed tennis program. The Logan swimmers had an enviable year in 19 76-77 presenting the Grizzlies with four state swimmers, Suzie Williams, Marianne Hancey, Dot Daines and Carol Cook, plus diver Sheryl Lisonbee. Logan placed second in two tri-meets and in a third much disputed meet Logan claims victory. They placed third in regionals and eleventh in state. Back row: Talitha Becenti, Robin Becker, Sue Marshall, Marianne Hancey, Jenni Taylor, Coach Van Leeuwen. 164 Sports Basketball is Total Commitment The basketball team, in its second season of competition at LHS, was a young team aided by a few experienced seniors. They competed against each team in Region 1, including Roy, Bonneville, Box Elder, Sky View, Bear River, and Weber. Coach Van Leeuwen says that the key of this 1976-77 season has been a total commitment from each of the players. Gymnastics — Logan's newest sport Gymnastics was in its first year at Logan High in 1976-77. The gymnasts worked hard and long to build the team up, and I.HS is proud of the good job they did. The team was comparatively small, but they showed their dedication to the team by working out each morning at 6:30 in the USU gymnasium. The team participated in three meets during the regular season, and the Regionals were held here on March 9. Front row, left to right: Jodi Peterson, Jill Bergstrom, Mary Reisher, Tami Colston, Tammy F.ames, I.ucy Hardman, Sally Cook, Donna Smith, Marcia Halufia, Marta Olsen.
