Y ELD Lithographed by COMMUNITY PflESS Prjovo. Utah Amphion LOGAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Logan, Utah 6 I ponder the road behind me now. 7 It seems as though only yesterday I first put my foot on this ever winding road. Where does it end? 9 10 FACULTY AND ACADEMICS I SEE THE PEOPLE WHO TRIED TO COUNSEL AND GUIDE ME ALONG MY WAY. THESE ARE GOOD PEOPLE; PEOPLE WHO HAVE WALKED THE ROAD BEFORE, AND WILL TAKE TIME TO TEACH ME ABOUT IT. SCHOOL BOARD Superintendent James C. Blair and the School Board become very involved with the students of Logan High School, and show this interest by allocating money for study carrels and visual aids. They do the best possible job with the limited funds provided. Decreases in enrollment cause limited funds. This means that the number of school sponsored trips, for such groups as band and vocal music, decrease to about one trip per year. The Board Members, elected to see that the schools run efficiently, try to work within the financial budget in such areas as visual aids, teachers salaries, etc. Other important goals set by the Board include completing business projects such as the expansion of schools. School Board Members: Mrs. Maria Ellsworth, Dr. Ronald Peterson, President; Dr. James C. Blair, Superintendent; Kenneth Cuthbert. Robert B. Williams, Assistant Superintendent; Dr. F. Neal Morten-sen, Dr. Malcom Allred. MR. MILLER For the last three years. Principal J. Paul Miller has been highly concerned toward directing the curriculum to allow for many student options. This year he has directed much attention toward humanizing’ school life for the students. He attributes the success of this school year to our number one studentbody. He firmly believes that the students have shown good judgment in the matters of dress and conduct. He feels Logan High students have shown their Grizzly pride. An avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Miller enjoys sports as a participant and as a spectator. His favorite sports include tennis and waterskiing. Mr. Miller wants all the students of Logan High School to know that his door is always open to them and that they should always feel free to discuss their problems with him. MR. POOLE Working with studentbody officers, planning assemblies and activities, and taking charge of Homecoming include only some of the duties of Vice-principal Clifford Poole. Mr. Poole feels that Logan High has a fine academic program and offers the programs that most students want. He also feels that the attitudes of the students at Logan High lead to positive, wholesome experiences in schooling. Mr. Poole stated that he would continuously look at what the students want, whether it be in academics, sports, or any other area that would make schooling more fun and meaningful. Mr. Poole enjoys sports because of his experiences in playing and coaching. One can often see Mr. Poole supporting Logan High in the sports activities. ENGLISH For the third year, the English department offered 22 different 9 week classes from Shakespeare to Black Literature for the Junior and Senior students. This year they added two new classes. Western Literature and Individual Reading. This elective program proved successful because students could learn about the things which interested them most. This type of program requires an excellent staff because each English teacher must teach four to five subjects a day and use many methods of teaching. The English department worked hard this year as they strived to prepare students for their future roles in life. Mrs. Gayle Haws English Mrs. Bessie Peterson French. English Mr. Ronald Jenkins Spanish LANGUAGE In addition to their language studies. Spanish students study the countries of Mexico and Spain. Several of the students plan to take a trip to Mexico. German classes receive printed material, films, and posters for classroom use from the German Consulate General. Students interested in study or travel, through Germany's student exchange programs, get off to a good start in German. Beginning French students play games and sings songs to improve vocabulary. Advanced French students read Camus and memorize poisie . SCIENCE A goldfish frozen in liquid air mysteriously comes back to life! Chemistry and physics classes really abound with excellent classroom demonstrations. Some of these look spectacular and intriguing. Some make you wonder whether you can believe your own eyes. Biology, botany, chemistry, physics, and zoology all have good laboratory programs. In these labs students can learn by doing. Labs also add variety to classes. The independent student not desiring teacher help or direction enjoys these individualized experiments immensely. Some students who go on to further training in certain fields need science more than English and mathematics. Many others get ideas about possible vocations. To all. science adds understanding about the fascinating world in which we live, learn, and die. Mrs. Carol Martinez Health Occupations Mr. Herond Hoyt Biological Science Mr. Lamar M. These students took geometry at the Junior High and they can take calculus during their senior year While senior math students memorize pi to thirty-five decimal places, advanced algebra students stare at a single problem for hours, only to find that the correct equation exists somewhere beyond their reach. For students interested in a business career. business math and data processing teach math as used in everyday life, besides teaching the mathematics needed in business. While other departments improve their facilities, teaching methods and curriculum, the Math department strives to improve their students. The math teachers want to see their students learn to do something besides multiply’ If they could see me now! A little extra curricular activity! What do Logan High vocal, orchestra, and band students do this year? They practice. The Chauntaires drill parts, for every person must sing the right note or ruin the total effect. Stage Band members listen to their own instruments. Then they listen to the instruments of the whole group They make sure the blend of tones reaches perfection The Orchestra trains their eyes to watch every note. They train their fingers to hit the right place at the right time. All three groups work to paint a perfect picture of sound, so that the total work of art may be displayed to a concert audience. A lot of hard work makes the IMC a great place to learn. RESOURCE ROOM Mr. Eliot Brunson Photography Students needing extra help in English, history, math, or science attend the resource room for the subjects they need special work in They go into the other classrooms for most of their classes. Bookkeeping classes not only teach students professional bookkeeping, but also help them to manage their own money more effectively The business teachers work hard this year to make their courses interesting and useful to everyone. INDUSTRIAL ARTS To prepare students for careers, drafting courses acquaint them with the problems they will face when preparing a complete set of house plans. Building construction classes teach boys how to use tools and materials safely and accurately. Designed to help students develop skills required to enter the automotive industry, the auto classes also teach students how to fix their own cars. Advanced art students choose four minicourses from among a list of fifteen. These classes include woodcut, sculpturing, jewelry, ceramics, and lettering. For beginners, a basic drawing class teaches drawing, design. and painting. DECA Distributive education prepares students to get good jobs. Students take this class either because they want to work or because they want to learn more about working in the field of marketing. This year the physical education department claims that people never outgrow the need for sports. No matter what your age. you can still participate in a wide variety of sports. This year they place emphasis on such activities as archery, bowling, tennis, golf and badminton The students gain enough skill and knowledge of these games to enjoy them in their later lives. This program gives the participants more of a purpose for learning, because they can always use these sports. Logan High's lifetime sports program contributes to the growth and happiness of the students by helping them to fill their spare time with fun activities. MILITARY SCIENCE Do you ever see creatures marching around the school in green suits? No. they haven't just flown in from Mars. They come from Logan High's ROTC department. ROTC guys get to march around on the football field before the games to post the colors. They also sponsor some of our fine assemblies. In their classes, they find out more about the army. Under the leadership of Col. Stockton and Sgt. Tripp, the army can prove fun. He adds the finishing touches 23 He creates his masterpiece in clay COUNSELORS Some people think that counseloi exist only to punish for bad behavior an help kids who have a lot of problems. But the counselors at Logan High do much more than this. In recent years the counseling department places more emphasis on the development of career guidance. This year the counselors try out a program involving sophomores and career guidance. In addition, they administer and interpret tests, including college entrance examinations. to all grade levels. The counselors keep busy because they must handle registration, class changes, and individual meetings with students in addition to performing these special services. Their many services help students to achieve their future goals. SECRETARIES Mrs. Rhea Wallontine Counselor If you went to this university you'd certainly meet a lot of girls! At the signal of the bell, the mad dash for the cafeteria begins. Who makes this daily drama happen? None other than the great cooks at Logan High. Judging from the length of the lunch line, the cooks manage to please almost everyone. The cook crew consists of: Leah Humphries. Aileen Preece. Lorna Nicholls. Agatha Allen, Paula Unland. Violet Larsen. Rachel Dahle. Elima Haderlie, and Neta Allen. CUSTODIANS How would you like to sweep the hails of Logan High? If you took this task upon yourself, you would have to plow through discarded notebook paper, torn down posters, candy wrappers, and even wet. sticky, spilled things. Well, this constitutes only a small part of the custodians’ job. They must also vacuum our littered lounge and take care of the extensive school grounds. STUDENT SENATE The Legislature of Logan High began its session at the beginning of the 1973-1974 school year. Mr. Chairman, may I rise to a point of order and lay on the table made the Student Senate Sessions full of fun and unusual happenings. Working with Mr. Henrie, the Student Senate learned the rules of Parliamentary Procedure. debate, and legislative terms that helped them with studentbody business. Music in the lounge and lunch room, ping-pong tables during lunch, and bills on assemblies and assembly conduct made the life for the Logan High Legislature one of excitement. But all work and no play makes a boring day. Student Senate representatives visited homerooms. planned parties, and passed a bill for Mr. Hoyt’s clock to add to the spice of Senators' lives. The sounds of the Sophomore Initiation Assembly echoed through the gym as the hot-shots” of the new sophomore class went down in the cool blue waterof the dunking machine. This year's studentbody officers made 1973-1974 one of the funniest Logan High has witnessed. They arranged for assemblies from USU. Weber State, and BYU, featuring acts like Elmo the Magnificent! They started the school year by providing the bench, painted in gold and red, for the Parking Lot Gang. They also started a new tradition of having Alumni from Logan High put on an assembly for the student-body during Homecoming Week. Song-leaders, Cheerleaders, Super Athletes, and The Greasy Colony returned to perform. They passed bills on girls' sports, boys sideburns, ski club, and school parties. They swept the school with a litter campaign complete with posters like I'm dreaming of a clean school . and Sky View keeps their barnyard clean . The Get Acquainted Dance at the beginning of the year, familiarized new and old students with each other. Our crowds grew for our home matches, our cheerleaders and songleaders gave us their support, and the Hi-Los even performed for a wrestling meet, a first in Region One. We had a 2-10 dual meet record. Several meets could have gone our way easily with a break at the right time. We will lose six seniors this year. Next year we will have a number of seniors and some good juniors with experience We hope for some lighter weights from our sophomore class Our co-captains. Neal Black and Klane Reynolds, have done an outstanding job this year Neal suffered defeat in only one region match. We appreciate the effort of all of our wrestlers and especially the effort of all the seniors. Our men have worked extremely hard and never get discouraged. We look forward to next year. Because of this basic need, the FBLA club hunts for members as their first activity. They begin the year with an FBLA tea. At this informal meeting, students who take business classes learn about the fun activities of FBLA. Then, at a special ceremony, the new members get sworn in. The purpose of the Future Business Leaders of America consists of trying to, develop the qualities necessary to become successful in the future business world. Through guest speakers, the members learn things that help them decide what business career they will pursue. A lot of parties and fun activities make this club well worth belonging to. 124 DECA Have you ever seen a bunch of kids armed with hoses and spraying cars? No, they didn’t get caught by the police for delinquency. You merely observed the DECA club holding a car wash. To raise money, the club also sponsored movies and dances, besides doing a little door-to-door selling. They also put their time into some service projects which included working for the March of Dimes and helping with Ecology Week. At a Western convention, they competed in sales merchandising and extemporaneous speaking. The judges chose a chapter of the year and a boy and girl of the year. This club features things from a lecture on diamonds to lessons about how to use a slide rule. The Science Club tries to create an interest in science and an understanding of the scientific method. If this sounds like your '■bag , the Science Club may be the place for you. SCIENCE CLUB OFFICERS: Kathy Salunke. President; Chris Daines. Vice President; and Chad Emmett. Secretary A spotlight shoots its rays across the stage. Microphones click on and amplify the rhythm of guitars. Suddenly the lights flash from white to red. then to blue, purple, and yellow. You know you're in for a fascinating and psychedelic assembly. It’s all made possible by the stage crew. Without them we d be in the dark . STAGE CREW: Steven Petersen. Bill Bylund, and Dale Smith 128 BOYS - GIRLS STATE If you think Boys' and Girls' State is just a bunch of hog-wash'' government and boring days, you've got another think coming. During the day the calm, mild-mannered staters went about their normal business of setting up a mock form of government, with a governor, senators, and representatives. But when night rolled around, the mild mannered staters turned into little devils. Buckets and bathtubs full of water immersing fellow citizens, food coloring in deodorant cans, and panty raids dominated their night lives. However, these were only minor problems. Their number one problem was the lack of the opposite sex. No dates, no nothing because boys were at Utah State and the girls were at Southern Utah State. BOYS STATE— Row one: Ben Jarvis. Sharon and Diane took a first place in both the Governor's Cup Invitational and the Utah State Bar Invitational. But the debaters don't spend all their time in competition. They spend countless hours pouring over books and magazines, compiling card files, and writing orations. However, to these dedicated scholars of Logan High, one hour of beating an opponent proves well worth fifty hours of studying a strategy. The Logan High super-stars who succeed in showing the world that they can't be beat include: Sharon Watkins. Diane Wilde. Jan Baugh, Janet Daines, Gloria Wennergren. Peter Daines, Bryon Andreasen, Tracie Hansen. Steve Peterson, Kathi Salunke. Christine Thomas. Chris Daines, Ron Wiser, Robert Welkie, Dirk Kotter. Joe White. Blair Daines. Weston Henrie. Coach. 130 SOPHOMORE DEBATE The Sophomore debate team spends a year of learning what debate involves— work and competition. During their next two years in high school, they will gain more skill and win some hardware , but first they must get the hang of it”. These aspiring, young debaters include: Dick Call. Jim Vanderslice. Russell Holdredge. LarryGates. Jim Butcher, Richard Cannon. Scott Hansen. Robert Parkinson. Nicole Skablund. Melissa Peterson. Lorraine Anderson. Fran Burtenshaw, Erin Palmer, Jan Perry, Ruth Heidt. Bret Schiff-man. Kim Nelson. 131 STERLING SCHOLARS Logan High certainly doesn't lack in brains. Pep rallies do this—and much more. If you get tired of listening to the same old cheers and pep songs, you need not grieve for long. Our fantastic Stage Band livens up the pep rallies with plenty of new and different tunes. Of course you cannot have a pep rally without the school song. As the studentbody unites to swell the chorus ever louder , they realize that the echos of high school will never die . 140 ASSEMBLIES Sophomore, junior, and senior class assemblies boast the many and varied talents present at Logan High. The sophomores recreate early day radio programs while scenes from Sesame Street dominate the junior class assembly. But the seniors win the prize with their own version of The Johnny Carson Show. Led by Jim Groutage. Affluvia entertains the studentbody with rock music that sounds good enough for the Salt Palace. Turning the auditorium into a movie theatre, Brian's Song tops the list of our great assemblies. 141 SCHOOL PLAY YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU CAST (IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE) PENELOPE SYCAMORE ESSIE RHEBA PAUL SYCAMORE MR. The girls get their chance to share a fun date with their prince charmings when the Pep Club Dance rolls around. When a group of sophomore girls get together to plan an evening to honor the men of their dreams, they can't help but want to make the dance something special. And as those who attended will testify, the memories of that night will live on. 148 SWITZERLAND 'Xfr -a, V -f' - v. The Art Club works many hours to give the Christmas Dance an artistic touch in addition to the musical beat provided by Hot Wax'. When the couples get tired of dancing. they take a stroll up to the dimly lighted balcony. Here they can enjoy hot chocolate and doughnut holes in an atmosphere of home sweet home , made to look like a cozy living room at Christmas time. All of those attending the dance feel the Christmas spirit as they learn more about themselves and each other. 149 HOMECOMING How do you make a Homecoming week? Well if you want a successful one, you must stir together the right ingredients. First of all you need to have some fun. Painting the town proves fun for the seniors as they make all the store windows look like works of art. Next you must add a lot of hard work. Many students spend hours hammering, chickenwiring. and stuffing their entries for the Homecoming parade. To spice up the week, mix in some pride. The sophomores show pride in the class of 76 by heaping up the biggest bonfire ever. All of the elements of a great week explode into a lot of indescribable happiness. Colette Anderson Mary Lyn Worley Queen MILITARY If I could save time in a bottle. The first thing that I d like to do; Is to save every day till eternity passes away. Just to spend them with you. If I could make days last forever. If words could make wishes come true; I'd save every day like a treasure and then. Again I would spend them with you. Main FOREIGN STUDENTS Mayleen left her home in the Philippines to receive an education at Logan High. As she entered the United States for the first time in her life, she noticed many different customs of family life, education, and towns. In the Philippines she had to get up to greet the teacher every time he entered the room. She had seven to eight subjects a day and she couldn’t eat during class sessions. She had no say in class unless the teacher asked her to do something. Logan High has proved more informal and easier for her. The second child. Mayleen comes from a family of seven children. While in America, she has noticed that American families seem closer together and more united. Education takes precedence as her main goal while in America. She will graduate from high school this year and plans to go to college next year in the Philippines. Mayleen has given us an appreciation for the great country in which we live and an understanding of the different ways of life in the Philippines. Some of the students at our school come from foreign countries to make their home in America while they receive an education. The foreign students at Logan High this year include: Denissa Barja, Bolivia: Nancy Skanchy, Saigon: Kathy Salunke. India; Wendy Ming-Chin Liu, Taiwan; Jenny Alarcon. Bolivia; Marisa Fernandez.
