P. SMITH SON, PRINTING MAX E. BRUNSON, PHOTOGRAPHY , A O VMPHION WAS a SON OF ZEUS, AND AN INCOMPARABLE MUSICIAN. HE AND HIS TWIN BROTHER ZETHUS UNDERTOOK ONCE TO FORTIFY THE GREAT CITY OF THEBES, BUILDING A LOFTY STONE WALL AROUND IT. ZETHUS WAS A MAN OF GREAT PHYSICAL STRENGTH WHO DESPISED HIS BROTHER'S NEGLECT OF STRENUOUS, VIOLENT SPORTS AND HIS DEVOTION TO HIS ART. YET WHEN IT CAME TO THE HEAVY TASK OF GETTING ENOUGH ROCKS FOR THE WALL, THE GENTLE MUSICIAN OUTDID THE BOASTFUL ATHLETE: HE DREW SUCH ENTRANCING SOUNDS FROM HIS LYRE THAT THE VERY STONES WERE MOVED AND FOLLOWED HIM TO THEBES. OUR SCHOOL YEARBOOK, FIRST PRINTED IN 1918, WAS NAMED AFTER THE GREEK DEMIGOD AMPHION. WITHOUT VIOLENCE, AND WITH WIT AND TALENT, AMPHION WORKED THE MIRACLE OF MOVING COLOSSAL STONES. WE, TOO, AS THE STUDENT-BODY OF LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL, CAN WORK OUR OWN MIRACLES OF THE FUTURE BY USING OUR SCHOLASTIC ABILI- TIES AND BY FOLLOWING THE EXAMPLES OF THE ANCIENTS. Your skirt is too short! Your hoir is too long ! These ore typical examples of the comments we automatically associate with our Assistant Principal, Mr. Miller. But when we think of Mr. Miller we are also reminded of what an essential part he plays at Logan High. Through his hard work and dedication to our school he has won not only the friendship of the students, but even more important, their respect. He is an enthusiastic supporter of school activities and organizations; and regardless of how involved he may be, he is never too busy to listen to new ideas. For these reasons the Amphion Staff takes this opportunity to extend a special thanks to him. And because he has helped to make the 1968-69 school year one we will never forget, we dedicate this book to Mr. Miller. 4 Administration — Page 6 Academics — Page 16 ;sms 5 Organizations — Page 52 Athletics — Page 84 Classes — Page 108 Honors — Page 136 Advertising — Page 146 The administrative affairs of the Logan City Schools are efficiently handled by Superintendent Eyre and The Board of Education. Such classes os typing, shorthand, business machines, bookkeeping and secretarial science give the student a superior background with which to work. 18 Mr. Lewis Mr. Henrie Mr. Jensen The Social Science Department headed by Larry Haslam, is designed to make the students think. By learning and understanding history they learn to solve contemporary problems and their complexities. Through guest speakers, on excellent collection of research material, and the latest teaching innovations the students absorb and grow intellectually. Debate was also affiliated with this department, adding new laurels to the already superior program. 19 Mrs. Tingey The art of communication is a difficult one to master, but through the skills and knowledge of the distinguished teachers it becomes alive and meaningful to the students. One of the most vital and basic parts of a person's education, students were tutored in grammar usage, vocabulary, literature and spelling. Other phases of the department were speech, where students developed poise and self confidence, and finally the library with everyone's favorite, Mrs. Elwood, the outgoing, cooperative librarian. The library contains many valuable research items, and in its lovely and quiet setting many students find time to read and study. Mrs. Snell Mrs. Jeppson 20 Mrs. Turner Mr. Felt 21 Chauntaires, Cantadores, mixed chorus, orchestra and band compose the musical portion of the Fine Arts Department. Under the direction of Eugene Tueller, another fine musical was presented, as well as several concerts. In connection with the department is the art section where various modes of design, painting, ceramics and sculpture are explored. Finally the dramatics sector adds its own distinctive refinement to this program Together these lead to an everlasting enjoyment and appreciation of culture. Mr. R. Haslem 22 Mrs. Miller The Vocational Sciences help students prepare for productive futures by teaching students the necessary skills now. Through such classes as auto mechanics, drafting, industrial arts, homeliving, tailoring, and advanced foods and clothing, students learned the basic skills vital to their chosen occupation. Mrs. Speer Mr. Christensen Mr. Petersen 23 Mrs. Wilson Swimming, basketball, tennis, and baseball made us some of the action found in the Physical Education Department. Girls and boys alike found the conditioning of their bodies exuberating. Athletic or not, all tried their best, resulting in true team spirit, cooperation and gratification. Jb Mr. McKeehan 24 Sgt. Tripp The Military Science Department of LHS, Jr. ROTC Division, dates back to the school year 1935-36. It was the first organization of its kind in the Stote of Utah, and was founded as an essential leadership training vehicle. Through the years this department has brought considerable recognition in drill and rifle competition and scholarships to the boys who have made it so great. It has provided a program for ROTC students to experience leadership and followership. Both experiences have proved to be excellent in the adjustment for living in a democratic society. There are many alternatives in ROTC for competitive activities. They include three rifle teams: Senior A team, B team, and sponsor team. These teams were 7th in a Sixth Army Postal Match and 2nd in the State Jr. ROTC Rifle Match. The curious activity is the counter insurgency. Its volunteers excel in comba-tives, field training, learning specialties in survival tactics and weapons markman-ship. A colorful auxiliary of the LHS ROTC is the Sponsor Corps, one of the oldest in the nation at the high school level. The 45 sponsors this year have learned to drill with and without rifles and shoot, sometimes better than boys. The girls, like the boys, have an opportunity to travel, to compete with other teams in Pocatello, Ogden, Denver, Reno and Salt Lake City, and put on exhibitions for the public. The Military Science Department salutes those students who have found a need for ROTC and made it worthwhile in their lives. 25 Mr. Bradford The new concepts of modern moth were taught in the math department-courses in general math, geometry, and algebra I and II. For students who completed these, a year of senior math gave them an opportunity to delve deeper into the science of numbers. The well-qualified teachers, Mr. Bradford, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Albertson, strived to meet state requirements and instill in their students a desire to continue in the field of math. Mr. Wilson Mr. Gilbertson 26 Mr. Peterson Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physiology, Genetics, Botany and Zoology make up the courses available in the Science Department. Laboratory work taught students how to use equipment and gave valuable experience, while films, visual aids, models and live and preserved specimens offered first hand knowledge and appreciation of the effects of science on students' lives. This knowledge would enable students to live more intelligently in the world around them. Therefore, this year’s team was dominated by many fine seniors as expected, but the total success was surely a team effort, and that team was made up of many fine juniors. The outstanding characteristics of this year's team were: DEDICATION; POISE; TEAMWORK. The team was dedicated to themselves as athletes, to the pride of Logan High, and the tradition of winning athletics. They showed poise as they played under extreme pressure all year and played well, never being forced into poor play, thus winning. Teamwork, which began in practice, was carried onto the court in every game without fail. Putting all these ingredients together this year's team accomplished the greatest basketball season Logan High has known, both from won-loss record to the accomplishment of athletic objectives. It was my great pleasure to coach this fine group of young men, and I appreciate the opportunity to work with such gentlemen, and under the fine tradition at Logan High. Thank you for such a GREAT season everyone who was associated with the basketball program Respectfully, Coach Lewis Coach Wilson 94 Coach McKeehan Coach Ryan Where's the bal I ? Put it in Bob!
