The Chief Logan Chapter of the Future Farmers of American is one of the largest and most successful organizations at Logan High School. There are 60 Vocational Agriculture students in the F.F.A.. and Mr. Fred Walter acts as ad- visor. The officers of the F.F.A. are: President. Dick Ogle; Vice- president. Mike Starner; Secretary. David Sheets: Treasurer. Terry Barlow; Reporter. Tim Anderson; Sentinel. David Canter; Student Advisor. Troy Smith; Chaplin, Rodney Watkins; and ]oe Skinner serves as the Treasurer for the 14th district. The F.F.A. is an organization made up of Vocational agriculture students. Vocational Agriculture is a course designed to provide students training in five major areas. These five areas are animal science, plant and soil science, shop, farm business management, and personal development. Students are taught skills which will be valuable in helping them to enter a career in the vast agricultural complex. The F.F.A. serves as an extension to the classroom to provide the students with the opportunity to further develop their skills through judg- ing. public speaking, parliamen- tary procedure, and community service. Students in the F.F.A. are re- quired to maintain a home project. This is important in helping students apply what they learn in the classroom and to keep and use their records accurately. This will aid them in making management decisions. The F.F.A. participates in many activities. The members of the F.F.A. take part in timber cruising contests, livestock judging, parliamentary procedure contests along with countless other ac- tivities. Selling citrus fruit is our chapter's main money making pro-J ject. This year, the citrus fruit sales brought in about 1.000 dollars. Many students are beginning td recognize and take advantage of the opportunities offered through! the F.F.A. what it is today. The! Chief Logan Chapter of the Future! The girls in the club are students of the business courses each one striving to make their futures in the business world a little brighter. The Business Club is very active within itself — it has elected of- ficers. with Leeann Lemon as president; Debbie Redd, vice- president; Shelly Davis, secretary; Teri Petrella, treasurer. There is also a news reporter, Chris McDowell, and Dixie Huffman is the photographer. The club has done many rewar- ding activities during the course of the year, including taking a tour of the Ohio University — Lancaster branch and Hocking Tech's secretarial departments, they sold posters and keychains very suc- cessfully, making over $600, plus many bakesales and a couple dances. But not everything the entire year was all Business for the club. They spent time on things to have fun also. At Christmas, they held a gift exchange, and in honor of Secretaries Day, the club bought all Senior High school secretaries and all of the business students flowers. For all of the effort the girls put into their work, at the end of the year an awards banquet is held to reward the girls who have the best speed, accuracy, production, etc. Each girl puts a great amount of pride and effort into their business work and the work they do in the Business Club is a fine example of their desire to become top-notch in their field. Does It Again This year’s Student Council, ad- vised by Mrs. Loretta Helber, is composed of twenty-six members who are elected by the student body. Led by officers Tracy Bell, Eric Griggs Cindy Dennis, and Martha Edgar, the organization meets the first and third Monday of each month for the planning of dances, assemblies, and other special activities. Among the dances sponsored by Student Council were the Homecoming and Basketball Queen dances. These followed the games at which the queens had been crowned. Profits from the dances were used to pay for the queen ceremonies. Assemblies included perfor- mances by the LHS Dance Band and by the group ‘‘Sunshine Express.” At Christmas, Student Council members worked together to decorate the school to create a special holiday atmosphere. The Bloodmobile was scheduled again this year as an activity. Members assisted the nurses and attended to the donors after they had given their blood. The Annual Awards Assembly in the spring ended the year for the council by presenting awards and recognizing deserving students. Although it was difficult to get all the members together at the same time because of sports and other extra-curricular activities. the Student Council members did their best to make improvements for the school. 1. Journalism 23 Logan High School seniors, under the supervision of Mrs. Chris Killoran, were responsible for the success of the 1980-81 L.H.S. newspaper known as the Chieftain. These 23 seniors worked hard to put out an issue of the Chieftain” on a regular basis. There was usually one issue per month and an issue for each holi- day during the school year. Although, in years past the “Chief- tain staff had only broken even in the sales of the paper, this year the staff made a small profit. The Chieftain was sold to the students and faculty at L.H.S. for only 25 cents a copy. Many private citizens of the Logan area also subscribed to the L.H.S. “Chieftain.” Each issue of the “Chieftain had stories and features dealing with activities, students, and issues of concern at L.H.S. Some features that appeared in the 1980-81 Chieftain were: letters to the editor, editorials, student profiles, and sports profiles. The staff used the paper not only as a means to communicate school news and opinions to the student body, faculty and community, but as a means for individual self improvement. Being a member of the 1980-81 “Chieftain” staff required respon- sibility and the willingness to work hard. Each issue of the paper was several weeks in the making and not one member of the staff was finished until the last copy of the “Chieftain” was sold. For each issue of the “Chieftain the staff had many decisions to make. They had to decide how many would be in that issue, what stories would be covered in that issue, and who would write those stories. They had to sell spots for advertisements in the paper, they had to interview and research for each story, type each story up, and fit the storiesj onto the pages of the paper. Finally the staff had to make sure that they! had done everything correctly before sending that issue of the) paper down to the Logan Daily newspaper office for printing. The! experience of being on the Chief- tain” staff was beneficial to all 1980-81 Chieftain staff members in many aspects of life. The Chieftain” staff members worked hard throughout the 1980-81 school year to make the school newspaper a success. 1. Carol Huffman advising Mrs. Killoran? |bk) 2. (bkj 24 Student Life Debbie May Each year, members of the year- book or Aerial staff work throughout the school year to com- pile a book of that year's student body, and their extracurricular and co-curricular activities. The 1980-81 Aerial staff was no excep- tion; they worked to make their yearbook one of the best in the history of Logan High School. Many hours were spent trying to organize the yearbook. The cover, done by Carl, Kathy and Rena York, was a culmination of ideas from all staff members and each section; as individual as it may seem, was just a part of a larger collaboration, the 1980-81 Aerial. Each section, page and story in the 1980-81 Aerial was treated with special care, each, the most im- portant and vital part of the yearbook. The purpose of the 1980-81 yearbook was to ac- curately recall the events at L.H.S.. for the school year, and to do this effectively, each staff member had to realize the im- portance of relaying stories accurately. There were 22 members on the 1980-81 Aerial staff. The members were students in grades nine through twelve, because of this and the fact that all of the staff members had dif- ferent interests, the 1980-81 Aerial staff was able to put out a more thorough and diversified yearbook. The Varsity L Club is com- posed of any student who has received a letter in a varsity sport. The Varsity L, advised by Greg Frauntfelter, was kept busy throughout the year with many ac- tivities. They sponsored the annual Lift-A-Thon in February, when athletes asked people to pledge any amount of money per pound the athlete lifted. Money from this event was used for weights, a new crash pad for track, and new baseball catcher's mits. The group sponsored two new events for the year. The first, held in conjunction with the American Heart Fund Association, was held the first weekend in March. For this event, members also accepted pledges from people for time jumped, either by minute or hour. The second of the two new events was a race called the Shamrock 7” road race. The race was held the weekend before St. Patrick's Day. The race was a 7 mile race held out Walnut Dowler Road. The top runners in the male and female categories each received a pair of running shoes. The Chess Club is another club at LHS who's main interest is mak- ing moves. The Chess Club was advised by Mr. Leroy Truesdell and made up of chess enthusiasts from grades 9-12. The club met on a regular basis and members com- peted against each other. Hoy Student Life 39 Senior Banquet 1981 On May 8th, 1981. the junior class sponsored the annual senior banquet, which was held at the Hocking Valley Motor Lodge. The program began with an invocation by Mark Hartman. After enjoying a delicious meal all those attending were welcomed by John Nihiser. junior class president. A remem- berable response was given by Kelly Adams followed with Fran Connor reading the class will. The seniors took a trip down memory lane as Sharon Mosure told the class history. After a trip into the past, the class zoomed into the future with Marianne Patton read- ing the class prophecy. Coming back into the present Teresa Fidler delivered the class poem. Delight- ful sounds filled the room as the Hilltop Singers provided the enter- tainment for the occasion. The eve- ning came to an end as Junior Gay read the benediction. The cool spring night with its lack of precipitation set the scene. The theme was Keep On Lovin’ You by REO Speedwagon, and the colors were lavender and sil- ver. Both the theme and colors were selected by the seniors. Free and Easy:, a local band. provided the music for the eve- ning. Although the seniors chose the theme and colors, the Juniors also had their share of responsibility. They were responsible for all of the planning and hard work which combined to make the Prom a suc- cess. The annual Post Prom was held in the cafeteria. 1. Junior Jakki Sparks. 2. Free and Easy. 3. While walking down the halls of L.H.S. this year, one might see the words — The Few. The Proud. The Chieftains — across the shirt of a dedicated athlete who worked long and hard to become a Chief- tain football player. The season started in the heat of the summer with two-a-day prac- tices and continued on thru weeks of continuous drilling on offense, defense, and game fundamentals. The team, under the direction of coach Dave Snipes and his staff, compiled a record of 7-3 on the varsity level and 1-4-2 for the reserve squad. The Chiefs will be losing 16 seniors including all- league players Jim Ogg, Roger Thompson, Mark Morgan, and Kelly Adams but are confident in the sophomores and juniors who will make up next year's squad. They practiced about every day and spent lots of time making signs that were hung in the cafeteria and in the hallways. Seventeen matches were played, with an outcome of ten wins, and seven losses. The nine girls who went out for the team practiced from two o'clock to four o’clock every day unless there was a match. Many girls had an exceptional season. For instance, the first doubles team, consisting of Beth St. Clair and Yock Emerson, had a total of fifteen wins and four losses including tournament play. Teri Fife and Jacque )ohnson both made it to the district semi-finals. The tennis team lost five senior team members. So if you are strong, willing to work, and to do your best, then maybe you should consider joining the four remain- ing lettermen and going out for the team. jacque Johnson gets into the swing of things. 174 Sports Maleah Dicker) Front Row: Debbie McNamee, Jacque Johnson, Gwen Hartley, York Emerson: Back Row: Tina Petrella. Football, basket- ball, baseball, right? Wrong! Did you ever stop to think about cross country? Unknown to many people, cross country members started condi- tioning in early August and con- tinued the rigorous schedule up to the day before their last meet. Practices were held seven days a week and consisted of many dif- ferent forms of training: long distances, medium distances, in- terval training, and Fartlek train- ing. The distance running varied anywhere from 5-14 miles. Inter- val training consisted of jogging a lap, whereas Fartlek training con- sisted of running a fast mile and then jogging a mile. Because of this organized condi- tioning, the team members were in great shape, shown in their fine 11-6 record (not including invita- tionals). When first-time coach Tom Murray was asked to com- ment on the season, he said. “Super! Best team we've had in years. He also added that he had a great time coaching the team and plans on continuing to do so next year. He stated that the team members were enthusiastic about the season and were good students scholastically. This ability helped them plan their strategy which is much needed in a race. Strategy paid off by their placing third in the league, the best showing in eight years; and eight out of thir- teen teams in the districts, the best showing of this school ever. In the Districts, Kevin Eberst broke the school record by running the course in 13:12. Kevin was also first team all league and missed going to the state meet by only two runners, a total of two seconds. Although losing Kevin and three other senior runners, John Jeffrey, Mark Russell, and Tracy Shut- tleworth. Coach Murray expects to have a competitive team next year due to the fact that he has six strong juniors and sophomores left to lead the team. Coach Murray would like to see more students go out for the team next year, at least 15 boys and 10 girls. This would enable the team to compete in all varsity, reserve, and girls meets. A large turn out is expected because of the latest physical fitness craze, and because people interested in going out for basketball or baseball can use cross country to get in shape. Coach Murray would also like to see more home meets, since Front Row: Chuck Weed, Brent Sheets; Row 2: Steve Roley, Steve White, Steve Crawford: Row 3: all visiting teams have come to the conclusion that the Riverview course is the toughest in all of Southeastern Ohio. Since we have both a top ranking team and such a tough course, it is easy to predict that the cross country team will continue to grow in the future as it has in the past. Tracy Shuttleworth, Dan Hawkins: Back Row: Mark Russell, Kevin Eberst. (th) 176 Sports Becky Brown Steve White shows everyone what means, he word conditioning really The smiles on Steve Crawford’s and Steve Roley's faces prove that there is more to cross country than just hard work. Apparently nine members of the girls varsity volleyball team thought this was worthwhile and engaged in many strenuous practices during the hot and humid month of August. The girls varsity volleyball team concluded their season by winning their first tournament match, but then dropped their second match. They finished out the season with an 11-13 overall mark and a 6-8 mark in the league which was good for a fifth place finish. Although they lost 13 matches, seven of those went the three game limit, so they were very close. According to Coach Debbie Mathias their season was very up and down. At times they played well together and other times they just could not get it all together.” Obtaining league honors were: Anne McBroom, 1st team; Kim Kellar. 2nd team, and Carol Huffman, honorable mention. This is nature's way of testing between the weak and the strong. Golfing in such weather can be frustrating to one's game. The bull pin and nine holes was the limit for the day. When the season finally begun. everyone seemed to be pleased. More attention seemed to be focused on the golf game, instead of just having fun. Practices became more difficult and less humorous. Three new stores have come to this area. They are Carefree Casuals, Hel- en's Flowers, and the Logan 5-10. Carefree Casuals adds a wider selection of fashion wear; such as, jeans, shirts, and shorts for both guys and gals. Now students can shop around for their clothes at Sharffs, Keiths, and Carefree Cas- uals. There is not any major price difference between these stores, so just shop around and buy where you prefer. Carefree Casuals is located in the Hocking Mall. Another new store located at the Hocking Mall is Helen’s Flowers. Helen's offers a large selection of floral arrangements. Now Logan has two florists, the other being Gompfs Greenhouse. The third new store to come to Logan is the Logan 5-10. This store has almost everything to fill your needs. The 5-10 is located down- town next to Keiths and |. C. Pen- ney. Let's welcome these new stores to our town and hope that some more ones will decide to come to Logan also. 242 Gommunity Debhie Hood and Terri Fife Debbie Hood and Terri Fife Community 243 Shoot to One of the hottest selling items in Logan. Ohio, in the winter of '81 was play dart guns. These guns could be purchased at Murphy's Mart or the Logan 5-10 for any- where from one to two and one- half dollars. These dart guns were used by the seniors in the assassin game. Each senior wanting to play the game would put his name in a hat. Then names would be drawn, secretly, to see who would assassi- nate whom. After the names were drawn, the players would hunt down their victims while also watching out for his own assailant. There were many rules for this game. One of the more important rules was that no one could be an eye witness to a murder. If there was an eye witness then the killer looses the use of his gun for 24 hours, and the victim is still alive even though he may have been hit. If someone shoots and misses, the person being shot at may then shoot the assailant. Another rule was that a player could only carry three rubber darts with the gun. Once a player shoots a person, he then takes the name of the intended victim, the person who was killed had. and hunts down that person. This keeps on going until there are only two players remaining. The one who shoots the other first wins. Some people found it hard to keep in the game because they would shoot someone who had their own name: there- fore having to commit suicide. While this game was being played seniors would be seen sneaking around the corners with their guns cocked and ready to shoot the first person who aims a gun at them. Seniors weren't safe anywhere or with anyone, not even their best friends because maybe one of them was their assas- sin. Some people were assassi- nated on their way to school, before a class. — anywhere an assassin could get his person alone. The trick of this game was to never be alone. 244 Community Debbie Hood and Terri Fife 246 Closing Kerri King. Kathy York Kerri King. Kathy York Closing 247 8ui)i uja mB 8uiso|3 j gfrz W? The yearbook staff, just like the mad scientist s; on many occasion feel like throwing the whole thing away, but because of their obliga- tion to Logan High School, the staff keeps working, and on May 30 the book was finally finished. As staff members jumped for joy. half panic-stricken advisor. Carolyn Jones, applauded the staff for making their first and final deadlines. Everyone on the staff went through times of ripping up quad-paks, breaking croppers; that they later hid under their bed. and even writing the wrong number on the page, but the book was finally done! The year wasn’t without good times though and when the proof sheets finally came back; there were tears but happiness as well with each staff member receiving that little amount of satisfaction that comes from such hard work. The story of the 1981 Logan High School Aerial could go on forever but it can not. because when the last page was done, so was the last day of school, and this year’s Aer- ial, is what we have left to remem- ber; what the year ’81 was like, for- ever!
